Zips -v- Villanova: 2016 NCAA Tourney Round #1

Recommended Posts

“Playing on this campus and having one of the best fields in the country is absolutely an advantage for us, and we have the best fans in the country as well,” Najem said. “Having the opportunity for us seniors to play at least one more game on our field just means the world to me. Hopefully we can get that result and move onto the next round.”

Marla: Zips rebound from disastrous October, host Villanova in NCAA's first round

Another great article by Marla.  She discusses the team's rough adjustment period follow the dismissal of Suoto.

I do appreciate Marla covering the zips and giving them some good publicity.  I am very happy that the team is playing so well.   I would have preferred that her article focus on the current players rather than focusing on one event that occurred in September.    Stuart, Sam, and Danilo have all missed significant time this year with injuries so it is not fair to blame one student athlete for the growing pains that this team has experienced.     I hope that the zips have a great win today but I am also very appreciative of how hard that Victor Souto competed for the zips and for everything that Victor has done for Akron soccer and the university over the last 4 years.

Could have been 4 or 5 goals for the guys, but good goalkeeping by the Wildcat man in net, and lack of final touches kept it closer than it might have been.  Did Villanova ever get that first shot-on-goal?  Anyway, nice start to the post-season, and I feel good about heading out to play our biggest rivals on Sunday.  Just beat those Hoosers.

It seems to me like the Zips are beginning to get their swagger back.  The touch line save by Soares, that lead to Lewis flying down on the right and ultimately feeding Hinds for the clincher, was simply fantastic.  I'm not sure I've seen a better example of teamwork on a very important goal.  The lineup seems to be settling in quite nicely at just the right time.  We've mentioned the improvements seen with new roles for Hinds and Soares.  I also like Niko taking the corner kicks as well.

Now it's time to see if the Zips 2016 2.0 version can take the success to a place that hasn't been too kind to the Zips 2016 1.0 version - the road.
