3rd&twenty Posted March 14, 2017 Report Posted March 14, 2017 http://footballscoop.com/news/mountain-west-leave-tv-online-only/ Could something like this be in the MACs future? Would beat that crappy schedule that the entire conference will have this coming season. Quote The question becomes: Is it worth $1 million per school to have all these disenfranchised fans?” Quote
K92 Posted March 14, 2017 Report Posted March 14, 2017 The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if the TV money is all a ruse to destroy the small fan bases of the mid-majors and relegate them to I-AA for not meeting attendance requirements in order to achieve the ultimate goal of the 64 team super division and run it like NFL Lite. The NCAA could already tighten the requirements and relegate some schools right now. Legitimately. The problem is that right now there are too many G5 schools meeting the requirement fair and square. When the tipping point occurs and less than half of these schools fail to legitimately meet the requirement, the plug could be pulled. I am sure a major flaw in these plans is the NYD bowl games. These handful of major bowl games may be saving the G5 in a roundabout way. Quote
kreed5120 Posted March 14, 2017 Report Posted March 14, 2017 Good, if they leave cable it could open up more and better time slots for us. I do think streaming will grow to become a viable alternative down the road, but still too many people rely on cable television to abandon it completely. 2 Quote
zipsoutsider Posted March 14, 2017 Report Posted March 14, 2017 I have mixed feelings about this. 1) We need the money. We aren't going get a million in ticket sales. 2.) I hate what ESPN3 does. Hate it. Hate it. Hate it. 3) The move to online viewing might be a win-win/ We would still get some money and perhaps be a better schedule. With more online viewing occurring it, it might not be as damaging as you would think. Quote
LZIp Posted April 10, 2017 Report Posted April 10, 2017 i came across this article regarding the struggles of CUSA and wanted to share. Mods feel free to move if you think it goes somewhere else. http://pilotonline.com/sports/college/old-dominion/football/it-s-inevitable-conference-usa-as-we-know-it-is/article_19e86f15-f21e-53f4-8868-505de84abcf2.html Marshall and probably WKU seem like the most logical fits for the MAC, but if I am being picky I would want Marshall and MTSU. My dad an I frequently have this conversation. I currently do not have cable (television); though I do have Sling TV (which I can change my level of subscription instantly...$20 a month, and can cancel it for the summer when I don't watch television. The problem is, for schools like Akron, is IDK if we benefit from the artificial more than we benefit from the reality. Because the nasty side to online services, is they compensate by actual viewership and not pretend viewership as cable does. To Kreed's point: I already think it's a viable option to Cable. Most of my friends do not have cable, and the others always actively talk about ditching it. Cable is on it's deathbed unless it adapts to the younger generation: (al le carte). Quote

My comment was directed towards the MAC still needing to be on cable TV for the exposure as Sling TV still only has about 1.2 million subscribers and Playstation Vue another 400,000. For comparison there are still about 86 million cable subscribers. Until those numbers grow to rival cable subscribers, the MAC still needs to play on cable. I personally have PS Vue so I'm well aware that skinny bundles are an alternative to cable. The way things are going they will eventually pass cable in subscribers. We just aren't there yet. zipsoutsider Posted April 10, 2017 Report Posted April 10, 2017 I will be interested to see how Google TV, which is coming out in a few months, and will be rolled out to select markets at first, changes the cable cutting and on-line viewing habbits. ESPN is in their line-up. One has to believe that Amazon and Xbox will be right behind them. Quote

Sounds like it runs a lot smoother than other services and has unlimited DVR. Something I wish I had with DirecTV Now. ESPN is included, but a lot of channels missing. Seems like every service has it's advantages and drawbacks. Nothing is the clear cut #1 option. Hopefully YouTube TV can be that. Unfortunately it's probably going to be a long time before it's in cities like Akron. Quote
LZIp Posted April 10, 2017 Report Posted April 10, 2017 Important to note during this discussion. This article is a bit dated so the number may not be as high, but still close. There are 19 million Americans without high speed internet access. Hard to "cut the cord" or satellite if you do not have high speed access. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/22/fcc-rural-internet-access_n_1821478.html 1 Quote

I spoke to someone from a mountain town in Colorado who said that their community realized that lack of high speed internet was costing them professionals who now work from home. Quote
ROCK1 Posted April 14, 2017 Report Posted April 14, 2017 MAC football coaches have said over and over that they want TV games any day of the week because of recruiting.. It's not about money. The AD's have said screw the fans. Quote

MAC coaches are full of crap. 1 Quote
