MAC Tourney

Yes, thankful we won today and didn't have the scenario that you're talking about.   But, I was just addressing why you think the committee would suddenly give a Top 4 seed to a team that's never been in the mix before, and is coming out of the MAC.  I'd be shocked if that happens.

All I meant is that it would be deserved if WMU's RPI rank is 4 or higher. I agree that they might still not get a top 4 seed but could be difficult to skip over depending upon who the other potential top 4 seeds are. Looking at current RPI, it's not likely that WMU's will be 4 or better. So, this is probably a moot discussion anyway. As you stated, I don't see an "unknown" MAC Tourney Champion getting a top 4 seed [without a top 4 RPI]. In my original response, I should have qualified what  I meant by "deserved"...only if RPI 4 or better.

1 Wake Forest

2 North Carolina

3 Duke

4 Indiana

5 Louisville

6 Clemson

7 Western Michigan

8 Notre Dame

9 Michigan State

10 Virginia

11 Stanford

12 Akron

I think it will be extremely difficult for the NCAA Tournament Committee to give all 4 top seeds to 1 conference. Depending upon how the final RPI plays out, I could see #3 or #4 being skipped for the next highest RPI ranked team not in the same conference [i.e., likely skipping an ACC team for a B1G team].

If Gaucho Dan's formula is correct [matches the NCAA"s], then RPI is bogus in that I do not see how Stanford could be ranked ahead of Akron. Akron's strength of schedule and opponents strength of schedule are both better than Stanford's. SOS is significantly better. (1 additional loss seems to be the difference.)

11 Stanford

Record 15-2-1

RPI 0.6154

SOS 71

OSS 21

12 Akron

Record 15-3-1

RPI 0.6116

SOS 46

OSS 18

This was right on and has been so worrisome this season...

“We talked about this all year with this group,” Embick said. “One of the things I emphasized to them was despite how well we’ve played and the wins we’ve gotten, we haven’t found our way back into games when we’ve given up the first goal.

“At some point, we’re going to be down and we have to come from behind and do what we do. Today was a perfect opportunity and perfect example of what we preach to them.”

Brad has been writing some good stuff (when they publish it) all season (when he’s there).  Understands the game well.  Writes up alot of high school matches as well.  But skip is right...”Nooooooo!”

The extra loss is the difference. Akron's winning percentage is 15.5/19 = 0.819, Stanford's is 15.5/18 = 0.861. A team's winning percentage is 1/4 of RPI, so the RPI difference from this is (1/4)(0.8611-0.8158)=0.0113. The actual RPI difference is much smaller, 0.6154-0.6116=0.0038. This is due to Akron's better strength of schedule. An Akron win over WMU will push them above Stanford (whose season is over).

I believe the highest possible RPI rank for Akron is #7.

If the Zips beat WMU, I calculate their final RPI (including the max bonus of 0.0065 for a road win over a top team) as 0.6278.

WMU's RPI, currently 0.6302, will drop with the loss to 0.6269 (or lower if there is a penalty for a home loss, which I don't know).

Clemson is #6 at 0.6356, and their season is done.

These calculations do not include shifts of SOS and OSS due to games played by opponents and opponents' opponents (too many possible cases to run through), but these should be minor effects.

So that leaves Akron at #7.

(This also assumes Wake beats Virginia in the ACC final; if Virginia wins, they will be above Akron also, and bump them down to #8. So root for Wake!)

zips fans...get there early if you are traveling to the "zoo"

sounds like they are expecting a record crowd

head coach Chad Wiseman:

"The table is set for yet another top 10 showdown at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday, this time with a championship on the line. I expect the atmosphere to be incredible. Our University and community will be out in full force, it will be a game you won't want to miss."

That's code for......

"We're going to make it look like thousands of people will be there, because we're begging you to come and support us".

They only drew 200 for their final home game this year, and only 500 yesterday.

going to be a very sloppy field

Surprised yesterday how good the pitch seemed to be....usually WMU's is terribly sloopy....I remember a few seasons back when they allegedly  watered it down and made it sloppy just to try to slow down our Zips!

We put a coating of water on our field before every game. The Zips should be used to it by now.

Wasn't our AD the AD at Marquette when we played there on an iced-over field? It's a crappy tactic that increases the chance for injuries, even if it's done in the name of home-field advantage.

It wasn't a coating...it was a frickin' flood they put down.  Looked like the football field up there a few weeks ago!
