I think I read somewhere that it's 30 players from Florida....

I heard Terry giving the number during his Boca Raton press conference.  I can't remember the exact number, but it was somewhere in that neighborhood.  I thought I heard either 27 or 37, but 37 seems really high.

skip-zip got me off my butt to check, since no one wants to see a salesman this time of year....just sitting here at my desk, minding my own business....Believe it or not, the Communications Department has already posted the Game Day Notes for the game on GoZips.com.  Here is the stat we've been dying to find out....

"AKRON-FAU CONNECTIONS Akron has 29 players from the state of Florida, including 12 from the greater South Florida area that were high school teammates with some of the Owls. Florida Atlantic has no players from the state of Ohio."

Apparently FAU is Buckeye-phobic.....and I don't mean the Suckeyes, just a term for Ohioans.....

Strategy for the game: Use all of the clock each possession in the 1st half. Target first downs while attempting to put points on the board. Keep their offense off the field. Use all 4 downs or fake punt early if on the Owls side of the field. Then open up the play book in the second half. Amato's defense will have their hands full. The Zips will need a strong performance from the offense and special teams to win.

I wouldn't say Buckeye-phobic but the scholarship cost is double for out of state students.  With us being in a recruiting hotbed, it is very calculated when we go after a player out of state.  Although that appears to be changing with Kiffin.

We score very fast, and time of possession doesn't seem to be a real concern with our coaches.  From a fan stand point we literally get disappointed with a short field.

We know all about your offense and your coaches, but they can't score on the bench. I'd also give Amato authority to use 2 of 3 time outs each half if available. Our spread is not good at ball control, but it can be done with slant passes, screens. RPO's, a decent run game, and a controlled mid-range passing game into open pockets given up by FAU. Keep the Owls offense off the field.

The November 3rd Marshall FAU game is interesting to me. Marshall had the ball 11 more minutes than FAU, had more first downs and out gained the Owls. if not for 4 interceptions thrown by Marshall in a rain soaked game this contest could have been a Herd win as it was very close - FAU 30 and Marshall 25.

Everything you said is true accept the score wasn't as close as it appeared.  Marshall was the toughest game we have played.  They have a great defense, so if you are saying your defense is a top defense....then ok we may have trouble.  But I looked at the yards you gave up vs Toledo and ypc...I think Singletary will get his 2,000 yards for the season.

Nope. Just pointing out some things. Seems like some fans are underestimating FAU. As I am probably under estimating Akron.

And yeah FAU has been dreadful for many years, but prior to Kiffin arriving the previous coach was bringing in top recruiting classes in the conference with Kiffin doing the same last year. The talent has been in place. Our previous coach was just a terrible game day coach.

I haven't seen a single person here underestimate FAU.  I think most here have had a relatively unbiased position; a loss to Buffalo is still a loss to Buffalo, which means FAU isn't unbeatable, irregardless of the apologetics fans will do to justify why they lost a game.  If there is a team being underestimated, it's Akron...not FAU.

True, but your not playing us the week before Buffalo; Buffalo was that turning point game.  Have one of your media guys ask Kiffin about the Buffalo game and he will say it was a game we shouldn't have loss and it still irritates them.  It's not like you guys drilled Buffalo though a one point victory does not fall under the dominating curb stomping category.

The score wasn't as close as it appeared when we trounced Marshall by almost 30 points, a little over a year ago.  With you guys beating a common opponent by a slim margin, and are calling them a tough game, I think you might be seeing why many of us are hesitant to take a C-USA program as seriously as you might hope.

Marshall had its worse season in about a decade last year.  That team is as relevant to this years teams as our team is to last year.

Well, I'm not surprised at your justification, knowing that you've already chosen to ignore the fact that you lost to Buffalo, and we beat them.

Say whatever you want,  but we've got 2 common opponents in the last year or so, and we've fared better against both of them.

Singletary had 200 yard rushing against Marshall and the game was close. Marshall had a chance to win it on the last play of the game, despite all of the turnovers.

Haven’t we been looking for this all year?  Only South Alabama, Washington State & Western Kentucky rushed for fewer yards than us in ‘17.

Answer - Injuries as you know. We will be relying on Manny Morgan and Kato Nelson to supply it in this bowl game. if we can get 130-150 yards rushing between them (with a little help from Edwards) then that would be decent and not unrealistic.

And Ohio University has probably had the most consistent success of any of the three teams being discussed over the last decade, and we beat them this year.

I'm just trying to point out that it's kinda fruitless to come to the Zips forum to spill out why FAU is so awesome.  We don't care.  Because we think Akron is awesome.  There can still be an exchange of comments, though it's fruitless to take the apologetic approach.  Cause really, we're already dealing with our own apologetics for our own team...we don't need to read it for another team.  The comment above is an example of said apologetics, we ultimately don't care.

I am not telling you not to think your team is awesome.  Why root for otherwise?  But just saying if you are hanging your hats on us losing to Buffalo early in the season and we have been nothing but dominate ever since you are mistaken.  We lost to Buffalo by 3.  You won by 1.  You won 3 games by 1; very close to being ineligible for the bowl.  I am just re-butting your contention that you think you can keep up with us.  This is a poor bowl matchup, not your fault.

And to compare a common opponent you played last year is a HUGE stretch.  Just so you know YES WE LOST TO BUFFALO.  I am saying it is irrelevant.  You can say it is relevant to your thesis of being competitive in this game.  I think you guys are going to get trucked.

Good to have some back and forth.  Honestly I don't know how the past performance and lack of success by FAU (or Akron) or games being referenced from previous seasons have anything to do with this year.  Buffalo was probably an outlier of not a very good performance by both teams given the games were close.

The MAC has 5 teams with 7 or more wins out of 12 teams, CUSA had 6 out of 14.  The MAC had 7 bowl-eligible (6 got in) and CUSA had 10 (9 got in).  I'd say both teams  and conferences are probably better than John Q Public will ever give us credit for because of the conferences we play in and the football history at each place.  Those kind of stats tell us that we have played some pretty decent teams, and the difference will be who can set the tone of the game.  FAU thinks it will be us because of the tempo we run on offense.  But like many have said, we will see.

What would be a good bowl matchup for the Zips?

I'm dreading the pasting we will suffer at your hands.

Please do what you can to have the Owls Take it easy on us.

The only thing that will keep this game close involves a tragic bus accident.

I'm surprised that FAU didn't score more points in the late season game against Charlotte, who is one of the worst teams in the FBS.
