Recruiting Service "Stars" - Do they matter?

Are we returning to the Bowden and Arth eras of recruiting players with Zero stars and zero other offers?  We just went through an impressive stretch of competing with other programs for players, and now it seems to have stopped.

Stars are great but don't put too much emphasis on them. There are a lot of reasons a kid may not be rated.  As a coach, are you going to offer a kid based on what someone else thinks of him?  No, you will make your own decisions.

Look at my prior posts and review of Akron's opponents regarding stars.  The team with the most stars of the recruits typically win the game.  Who has more stars in the recruits, OSU, Auburn, etc.  They win because of more talent.  Then, we will have CK give 5 examples over a 15 year period where stars do not matter.  Stars are not 100% accurate, but the trend is there.  As I stated in the past, if you cannot play above TBAll level, you do not understand that talent matters in sports.  I am out on this post so say whatever you want.

See ya Big J@#k O#f.  All I was saying is that there is talent that never gets rated.  Sure, overall, most kids do get rated that want to play beyond HS, so of course there will be a trend for those that do.  No surprise there.  I see no reason for concern if these coaches offer a few no star kids if they feel they deserve it.

They will get stars if they are getting offers, it happens, he probably never did a shoe company camp to get rated.

This does have a lot to do with it.  Often a kid will be given an extra star if they sign with an OSU or Alabama, etc.

And yeah, the kid probably didn't go to any of the summer camps where they evaluate kids.  But why he wouldn't go, Idk?

He doesn't have any other D1 offers, so the staff must think they've found a diamond in the rough.  But Toledo has offered him a PWO, so Toledo is aware of him but didn't think he was worth a scholarship.

Do coaches ever give out scholarships to a marginal player as a way to ingratiate themselves to a particular coach?  Idk.  I'm just typing off the top of my head this a.m.

Anyway, MoJoe & Co. must think he's worth it & I'm gonna trust them.  They must think he's better than Barberton's Cameron Macon, and I thought that kid was an absolute stud... but he hasn't been offered by anyone either (top end speed is likely the issue).

Some people preach not to do the shoe company camps and to just do the College summer camps of schools of your talent level as basically a tryout for your scholarship.

Those big shoe company camps cost money to 95% of the kids.  The other 5% are free & there film is a no brainer scholarship already & are used to get people to pay so you can get a Nike shirt

Also, why should Toledo offer with no offers yet, let’s see what they do now with an offer.  I know your all tired of me saying it but this year is extremely different with Covid extra year and new immediate eligibility for transfers

Because there seems to be so much debate whether the 5*, 4*, 3* and 2* system adequately measures athletic talent, I propose a new trademarked rating system. This system is based on the apparent magnitude of all known stars (excluding the sun) rather than either the stars absolute magnitude or its distance from Earth. This criterion results in the following four categories: Sirius, Canopus, Rigel Kentaurus and Arcturus. This system should provide welcome relief to the severely mathematically challenged, and the only drawback I predict is that for a while we all are going to have to suffer through sentences that include, for example “the canopus (formally 4*) wide receiver…), similar to what we experienced when 1AA was replaced by FCS.

I’m looking forward to the day when the Zips nab their first Sirius. Go Zips.

When they do, you can bank on him having  either -

A.) Knocked off a liquor store

B.) Scored a 4 on his SAT

C.) Possessed a 450 lb bench press, and the bone density of Betty White
D.) Been grossly over-starred

Note - Multiple correct answers are possible.
