LAX

I just saw we have a new Lacrosse coach!  Didn't even know the previous one was gone.  The bio on the new coach is impressive, albeit for a lower divisional coach.  But she seems like a winner, and God knows that the LAX program needs something after the addition of the sport.  They have not exactly performed up to expectations, or even .500 level.  The bio reads like a Charles hire, someone he trusts to move the program to the next level and not make excuses.

I also did not see an announcement that Christy Mitchell was not retained or fired or resigned. So this post on GoZips.com was a slight surprise only in that I expected that there would be an announcement that the position was open. Coach Mitchell was someone who I wanted to succeed. That was not in her wheelhouse. The womens LAX program was consistently below mediocre, even when they had time to get the program winning. A change was necessary and I'm glad Charles moved forward with it. I wish the new coach all the best. I like Charles expectations that all sports be consistently in the top 3-4 of the MAC.

The recent achievements for our Lax team are impressive and hopefully will continue to grow. Most wins in a single season, most conference wins in a single season- and remember  they still have a game to go. They lead the MAC in assisted goals per game- a sign of "teamism". They play a style of offense that borrows a good bit from basketball- you will see transition goals, screens, isolation plays, picks, pick-and-rolls; on defense, they are pretty effective at a help-style defense called "slides". Add some elements from soccer and hockey- the result can be a fast-paced exciting game requiring speed, skill, intelligence, and lots of solid conditioning.

Just two years ago, they were mired at the very bottom of the 130 division one programs. Now they can and do compete as a legit "mid-major" division one program. I liked their first coach but there is no denying their improved play under coach Jones.

They are also graduating their players and sending them off to great careers. I don't know the whole list but do know of teachers, nurses, a number of physical therapists, one in medical school, social work, a Chem major in graduate school studying food science. Given the horrible situation in the revenue sports currently, it is pleasing to find one that maintains its roster a bit, is winning, and producing graduates.

I hope they win this coming Sunday and add to their achievements.

Go Zips!
