If Zips lose @ Xavier, it would make us a bubble team with RPI in mid 40s.  A mediocre finish to the season and 7th place in conference is not a favorable resume for an At Large invitation.  Zips best take care of business @ Xavier or the season might be over.

This is what the quarterfinals matchups look like....(when Sunday morning RPI's and records are included)

     Top Half of the Draw

Georgetown vs. Seton Hall

Georgetown is 6 in RPI

overall record of 11-2-2 and 6-1-1 in leage

Pirates are 63 in RPI

Overall record of 8-5-3 and 3-4-1 in league

St. John's vs. UConn

Johnnies are 52 in RPI

overall record of 8-3-5 and 3-1-4 in league

UConn is 65 in RPI

overall record of 8-7-1  and 4-4 in league

      Bottom Half of Draw

Providence vs. Creighton

Providence is 56 in RPI

overall record of 7-5-3 and 4-2-2 in league

Creighton is 99 in RPI

ovcerall record of 4-6-6 and 3-3-2 in league

Xavier vs. Akron

Xavier is 62 in RPI

overall record of 7-3-5 and 4-1-3 in league

Akron is currently 35 in RPI

overall record of 9-1-7 and 2-1-5 in league

Akron was 27 in RPI before they tied a Butler team that had only won 2 games all year.

Akron dropped  8 spots in RPI with a tie against #113 in RPI (Butler)

If Akron loses in regulation or overtime at Xavier, I agree that they would probably drop to the mid 40's in RPI (Akron record would be 9-2-7)

If the loss were to occur on PK's, Akron record would be 9-1-8...and the RPI drop would probably not be as steep as a straight out loss

I view the game at Xavier as a must win for the Zips.   If they lose in 90 minutes at Xavier, I do believe that the zips season is over.

Georgetown is the only Big East team......that is certain of a spot in the NCAA tournament....even if they don't win the Big East tournament.

The Big East is probably hoping for a Georgetown vs Akron final....as they are the 2 highest RPI teams.   A Georgetown vs. Akron final would probably guarantee that the Big East would have 2 teams playing in the NCAA tournament.

Practice your PK's this week, Zips.   I have a feeling that PK's are in the future for the Zips in the Big East tournament.

And yet if we lose at Xavier in the Big East Tournament, with only two losses, we likely won't make the NCAAT.

Bring back over time! In the sport as a whole, ties only make sense in a table format in which team plays every other team home and away and there are thirty-eight games to separate the quality of teams. Ties in NCAA soccer are unjust.

I'll explain my thumbs down / $0.02. The NCAA soccer season is compressed, as we all know, with teams often playing 3 games every 7 days. Consider the effect that an extra 140 minutes would have on the health of our players. How many more might have significant injuries? Personally, I think the NCAA eliminating regular season OT not only better aligns NCAA rules with FIFA rules but is in the best interest of the student-athletes.

Of course, it doesn't matter at this point in 2023. Post-season games include OT as needed. As I recall, the current NCAA OT rules are: 2 OTs, 10 minutes each, no sudden victory. If still tied after the full 20 minutes OT, then PK shootout. Someone please correct me if that is not correct.

You are correct @Zip_ME87

Per NCAA.com

No more golden goal in the postseason

The rule: The days of the golden goal are over. As of 2022, if a postseason game (meaning conference or NCAA tournament) is tied after 90 minutes, overtime will not end when one team scores a goal. Even if a team scores seconds after kickoff in the first OT period, the game must continue until both 10-minute periods have been completed. Should the score remain even after both OTs, a penalty kick shootout will decide the winner.

What it means: While golden goal rules seem to generate exciting finishes in knockout soccer, in theory, the sudden-death rules affect the quality of play in practice. Often, neither team commits numbers forward for fear of leaving itself vulnerable to a tournament- or season-ending counterattack goal. The general idea behind this rule change is to improve the quality of play, giving teams a chance to get back into the game even after conceding in overtime.

Respectfully, I disagree. Unlike most international leagues that allow ties, the NCAA permits re-entry on substitutions, so there's no requirement that the same players play all those additional minutes. AND the ability of a coach to manage minutes to prevent injury and the bench's exaggerated role in the game is a good indirect way to award wins and losses based on merit.

The other thing I disagree with is that both the NCAAT and FIFA require a full 30 minutes of extra time rather than golden goal. Why continue playing after breaking the tie? The full 30 minutes diminishes urgency and potentially recreates, through both teams scoring, the exact circumstance that was intended to be broken.

I always liked the idea of both teams being required to remove a player from the pitch every three minutes to open up more space and create more opportunities. I suspect that with this approach, penalties would rarely if ever be needed.

For Jared to respond like this is unusual. He knows there are idiots out there who will use any medium available to prove they are idiots. Jared wants to win more than any of us. He is doing all he can to make that happen. Many schools, even in the BE, play for a tie. Coaches want to keep their jobs and if they can park the bus in front of their goal for 90 minutes they can tell their AD and fans that they tied mighty Akron. If I had responded to this person I would have ended with an F U. That's why I'm not the coach. He has more class and we are lucky to have him.

Accusing Jared of playing for ties is ridiculous. It's also not realistic to blame all of our ties on the other team parking the bus which wasn't always the issue.
