zen
:oAlso, the stadium will be built to allow a roof to enclose the venue. Curtis said they looked into constructing a closed-roof stadium, but it would have cost an extra $60 million. In time, however, it could become a closed-roof venue. This sounds like Browns stadium's design. They left all four corners completely open to allow pylons to support a dome if neccessary. We could host a Goodyear-sponsored bowl game. The only problem is that we would have to choose between a dome and a new basketball arena, given budget concerns, and I would give my support to a new BB place before a dome, but would love both. zff
I am sure Coach D would not mind leaving the JAR for a 60 million renovated Football stadium. The Zips could have thier own mini Carrier Dome.Don't judge the first final plans because it sounds like it is only part one.......
akronad
27,500 & it will be open ended, not a bowl. 55M to build. Will not affect tuition, it will be all donations (30M) & bonds 25M.Design is very interesting.Rasor, I can get you a picture of the stadium. We just need a way to communicate. mcperp
This is excellent news! I doubt ticket prices will remain the same (as the article states), and nor should they. More gate money = a better program, not to mention paying off the $25 million bond issuance. Would love to see real grass in the stadium and also something that makes this stadium unique to the university and the city (insert favorite joke about akron's long-gone rubber industry here Clemson's stadium has players arrive on the field via the stands and they touch a lucky rock, in Seattle, fans can arrive at UW games by boat, at Georgia, they have hedges surrounding the field, at Can't, players try to reach the sideline without pulling a groin (hehheh). Any ideas for the Zips or their new stadium? Maybe relocate an old Ohio Canal lock as a gateway to the field/stadium.
skip-zip
I'm a little dissappointed that it won't be a bowl-type design. I think that two opposite sides of stands just doesn't create the same atmosphere as a rounded design. And although our AD says that he wants this facility to rival anything in the country, this stadium isn't going to do that.I am at least now somewhat relieved that it will have the flexibility to expand.Nice to hear mention of the possibility of a mini Carrier Dome type facility in the future. I remember this being talked about extensively back in the 80's. Maybe it will finally become a reality at some point, and give our basketball program a venue for big games without having to build a new basketball arena. InTheZone
I could see with a few good seasons with big crowds and big revenues the stadium getting a nice upgrade. I think this is the right way to do it now.... build realistic for our current situation, but built with future expansion consideration with the EXPECTATION that the program will be taken to new heights. That's what Akron really needs folks, and something I've never seen our fans have.... HUGE EXPECTATIONS for the programs 5-10 year future. And remember... if the stadium is being built with the capability of becoming a dome.... then it's gotta be built with the capability to become a bowl too . I think we should all withhold judgement until we see the final product.
eguins
You guys only have 4000 season ticket holders? Ouch. YSU is towards 8k, but your number should rise with the new stadium!!!!Congrats on the news though!

Honestly I like that idea. That or we need to capture something from the Rubber Bowl and bring it to the new stadium. I really can't think of any significant architectural features of the Rubber Bowl. (I was thinking something similar to the terra cotta sculptures saved from the old Spicer Hall and implemented into the archway leading to the Rec center). Can anyone think of anything worth moving from the Rubber Bowl?Another question...What should the name of this new stadium be?
urbanpreppie05
What should the name of this new stadium be?That has already been taken care of...look to the highest bidder...which IIRC, is either First Energy, Summa, or Infocision. akronad
And the second highest bidder, will have the naming rights for the field.
zip81
You guys only have 4000 season ticket holders? Ouch. YSU is towards 8k, but your number should rise with the new stadium!!!!Congrats on the news though! You seem to think YSU and Akron are in similar circumstances, of which you are wrong, of course.Akron is in a major league sports market and competes with the Browns, Indians and Cavs for the entertainment buck.Very few monster D I programs are in major pro markets. There are a few exceptions, such as Miami FL, USC, but there are not many.Who does YSU compete with...the Scrappers???? Oh boy. You may argue that Youngstown in wedged between two pro sports markets, however, the distance is too great to be considered part of those regions. The Aeros are sold out just about every night. That would not be possible without a nice facility like Canal Park...in addition to their recent Eastern League Championships.I have to believe that with the new stadium, the corporate backing that comes with the suites and the recent direction of the football program, that attendance will improve. zip81
And the second highest bidder, will have the naming rights for the field. They could do what Browns Stadium and the Wolstein Center did....sell naming rights to each gate...you know...just to milk a few more bucks out of the situation. While quite likely, I would hate to see the Zips playing football at something called Summa Field. I would hope that the University has enough Integrity to name the stadium after someone important to the history of the school. However; Summa Plaza at the north end of the stadium, that has concessions and a Kangaroo statue, does sound good. As does First Energy Walkway, that leads you from the Stiles Athletic Complex to "Gardener Field" works for me too.

And since our Almni don't have deep pockets or sheer numerical alumni sizes like OSU, Ou, or Miami, this is how it had to be done.I could very easily see the plaza being named after an late official/benefactor however- (not Gardner...the theater in the Union is named after him)
Blue & Gold
Any ideas for the Zips or their new stadium? Maybe relocate an old Ohio Canal lock as a gateway to the field/stadium.I mentioned this about 2 years ago and still think it's a good idea. I think we should construct a grand, landmark clocktower next to the new stadium. A shout out to the beautiful clocktowers around town. Also, maybe it could ring whenever the Zips score! urbanpreppie05
Why do you always bring up Youngstown? The city is in rapid decline. He's right on both counts...but it seems, equins, that you use our forum to build up YSU (once again, a great school and great football program) to pass off "compliments" to make us look bad and build your school up. if you really want to do that, go do it with the hundreds of other YSU fans on your own forum-Oh yeah, there aren't any. We have fans from Toledo, Can't, and other Schools that post here and although they trash talk, they still don't down our school as much as you try to. g-mann17
What the hell kind of a mascot is a penguin anyhow? At least a kangaroo is athletic. Well to add to that, while we are all aware of how the Zips came about (fashionable foot protection) I would like to point out that YSU came up with the Penguin during basketball season when a bunch of their players were to wussy to stand in the cold without moving for a little while. They flapped their arms about and someone said they looked like a bunch of penguins. So the name stuck, much to the chagrin of the town. Another interesting fact, YSU used live penguins as mascots. They managed to drown the first Pete the Penguin. All these facts and more when you read "Youngstown State University: Oral History Program: Youngstown College Football." and interview with Marilyn Chuey daughter of the first President of the Youngstown College (or YSU).
