Meet the Team Tonight

Recommended Posts

I was puzzled to see the Zips soccer team playing a Saturday evening home match at the same time as the men's football game at the Rubber Bowl. In yet another scheduling decision rife with conflict, the Meet the Team event for the basketball programs is being held tonight...up against the Tribe and HS football.

Click for details...my guess is they won't run out of food.

BTW - I'll be at the JAR :champs:

The timing really sucks .. but there's not really a way they could have avoided this conflict. My guess is the planning for this preceeded the Tribe Clinching .. and the playoff schedules weren't set yet.

I'll make a deal w/ you CK .. you take good notes & report back tonight & I'll post a daily update from Fairbanks next month.

I agree with the football - soccer scheduling conflict, however the "Meet the Team" event is not really a screwup. This isn't a bad idea in the context of Homecoming Weekend. If Homecoming Weekend would bring a lot of alumni back to campus then the "Meet The Team" night would fit right in with the athletic activities. In past years the soccer team and football team both played on homecoming weekend, but one played in the afternoon and the other in the evening.

Ditto that...and I hope i'm not to first to say how sorry I am that i missed this event to watch a baseball game. Never again! :mad_flame: See everyone tonight!

Quick notes, since I need to get my gear ready for the afternoon tailgate:* Jeremiah Wood is a flat-out monster. I would put his biceps up against just about anyone from the football team. He was also the most outwardly-friendly guys in the autograph session. He's a guy you really like rooting for. Last year he was in good "strength shape." This year he's also in excellent "basketball shape." I think a common phrase to be heard in the JAR this year will be "Romeo who?" I stayed for about 40 minutes of the practice. It was mostly just drills...tough to get a read on anyones skills.I met Steve Sweich. Very nice kid. He said he was enjoying Akron, and was ready to play some ball. He's by far and away the biggest "big man" frosh ever to play here. He's a true wide body. Legs are thick. Not like Bruce Weinkein. Judging from the scrimmage alone, I would say he'll have a tough time with the speed of Division 1 basketball early on. And his game is definintely 6-feet-and-in...his jumper looks like mine. But he has a great attitude, works hard, and really seems to enjoy playing. He'll be an absolute monster in a year or two, and it will be fun watching him develop up until that point.I'm guessing Chris McKnight takes a few more 3's this season. He has a nice shot from out there. His younger brother definitely won't play up until mid-December. I forget the name of the test you need to take when you graduate high school...but whatever that standardized test is, his test scores didn't reach Akron until September 4th...after school had started. Thus he's ineligible. No practice, no nuthin', He is on campus and taking classes. Will he play after mid-December? It will probably depend on how bad he's needed, and how quickly he can catch on to the system. If he's going to be the 3rd man on the depth chart, due either to the guys in front of him playing well, or his learning curve in digesting the plays, terminology, teammates tendencies, etc I can see him redshirting. The guy next to me said "This is the most talent I've ever seen on the floor for a Zips team. Can you believe it was only 5 years ago we were looking at stiffs like Brian Wood and Brian Hipsher getting decent minutes?"I overheard one of the staff talking about Rydell Brooks excellent work ethic. He can't play this year, and no one really seems to know where he'll ultimately fit in. But he's apparently a good kid, and he just got a little homesick @ Niagara.Coach Kraley apparently took Scooter Taylor's old position? No details there. However, the guy that lived every former Zips player's dream...taking a swing at Thunder Dan...Ryan Andrick was seen helping out at practice. Is he now a bench coach? Was he just helping out, taking in a practice at his alma mater? Only The Shadow knows. :ninja:

I spent a few minutes talking to Ryan Andrick. He had been in touch with KD over the summer and let KD know he was available to help if needed. Last Friday's practice was "his first day on the job." Ryan wasn't sure what his responsibilities would be and I didn't ask whether it was a paid position or not. Ryan is still teaching in the Springfield school system but is no longer coaching. I shook Steve Swiech's hand and told him it was nice to have him at Akron and that I appreciated his enthusiasm for wanting to be here. HUGE hands, just like the rest of him. As one other poster said, we've got truly BIG to go with tall in this one. Seems to be a really nice guy. Seeing the guys again Friday night and watching that mess Saturday night has me excited about the upcoming basketball season.

How is Bardo looking? Has he improved his offense? Also, what about Darryl Roberts?

and McNees...? Anyone able to peek in on their practices?I'm hoping C. McKnight will become the Romeo clone he seemed to be early last season and that Bardo and/or Swiech can fill in immediately. That should allow JW to run wild in the post.I'd also like to see B. McKnight get redshirted only because we're losing so many after this season. Any experience he can get without using a year will help continue the winning the following year.

First look was impressive. My thoughts.Going to be darn hard to red shirt Steve Swiech. He is a full load. Huge, mobile, and coachable. But, long term, since there is such depth, KD can afford to red shirt him.Rydell Brooks in uniform and hustling. Think he sits a year due to transfer rules. Two foot long dreads sets him apart.Bardo is nearly as large as Swiech. Mike has a year of the system under his belt. He will contribute. No Darryl Roberts or Brett McKnight bodies in sight. At least not Friday night.C-Mac looking more Rome like. Still has a lot of senior talent in front of him. He will get mote minutes this year. Real positive here. That Senior talent is Quade Milum. Just a tad more muscular this year and still leaps higher than Zippy. Many years ago one Don Williams was the Zips Cap't Dunk.I think it is safe and wise to bestow this honor on Quade. You are going to love the show.Surprised that most of the B-ball rags have Jeremiah Wood no where in sight. Fools. J Wood is the man that will elevate the Zips to a better season than last year.Maybe no twenty-six in season wins, but a team than could beat last year's squad night after night. Book it.Saw a glimpse of the early season starting line up. Surprised that no one wrote about it. Five on five drills full court, line up was J. Wood (looking great), N. Dials (theblonde bomber), steady N. Linhart, Quade in the four slot and the point guard was Ronnie (Jet) Steward.Yep, looks like Ced has the ego to handle being the best sixth man in the conference (so voted) again this year. Perhaps the best sixth man in the nation. He has my vote.Mop haired Steve McNees will see plenty of floor time.Jimmy Conyers needs to hone his shooting skills to grab the three hole starting spot. Otherwise, he looks to be fit and ready. Between Jimmy and Nate the three spotis in excellent hands.Met Andy Moss the invited walk on out of Copley. Really nice kid. Think he will contribute and grow. Maybe only junk minutes this year. But, this year of experiencecould help toward REAL minutes next year. Hang in there Andy.Tim Carroll still with the team. Think he can contribute. A lot of it is up to him. Do the work, Tim.The mad bomber is now a senior. Nick Goddard still able to bring the three ball in the clutch.Going to give them a week to get the kinks out. then I will take a second look.

NBS, I did not say that Swiech would be red shirted. What I am implying is that with all the front court depth (Milum, Bardo, Wood, McKnight) that has game experience and/or knows KD's system getting on the floor is a tall order at this point. It seems practical to red shirt Swiech. Gives him a year to learn as Bardo had. Extends thereign of having a really big man. Bardo and Swiech are the first really big men since the Huggins era.Actually, what I inferred was that Swiech is such a presence that thoughts of red shirting him are hard to justify. He looks to be an awesome player. We are talkingBrian Roth type player here. Probably a good bit better than Brian Roth. That is high praise for this young man.J Wood is a large man. He is a stud in the real sense of the word. Swiech dwarfs J Wood. Swiech is no bean pole. I could see Swiech playing defensive end in the NFL.A kid quickly squanders a dollar in a candy store. Coaches hoard their treasures. So, at this point I will speculate that Swiech will be red shirted. Most likely Brett McKnight will be red shirted or something similar. Brett is a small forward. The Zips have Linhart and Conyers in that position. If need be, eitherMilum or Chris McKnight can play the three hole. Granted, Brett can play the four. But, J Wood owns that spot. Milum, C-Mac and Linhart all have game experiencein that spot. I have been told that Bardo can play down to the four as well. btw, J Wood played the five most of the time last year and will again this year.In Dambrot's system most players rotate positions. They are talented enough to play two or three different roles. This works well. Gives depth. It all comes downto depth and needs. The Zips have a lot of depth at every position except point guard. But, even there Dials or Middleton could cover. Look for Steward to run thepoint.I am really high on this team's potential. What surprises me is that most analysts are clueless. I would like to know how Blue Ribbon Yearbook grades the Zips.

how is out point guard postion looking.? know we can play middleton / dials together but then we have no depth.if the 6-9 kid play then kd could put woods at the four spot.i do not remeber the last time we had a true center that was any good.
I saw most of the practice - "mop hair McNees" looked good. - better than Ronnie. Word on the street is that Ronnie hurt his hip later in the week. Anyone see the intersquad game on Saturday?

Saw some of it, they looked "ok"... missed alot of shots, looked like Sallee was in alot for Steward? These guys have lost a ton of weight, I will tell you that! And they did run alot, when they messed up! (maybe that is why  )
