ZachTheZip
Tonight at 7:00 the Zips take on Walsh at the JAR in a pre-season scrimmage. Today is the day we see who our PG could be. And also the first time we will see our freshmen in action. Everybody that can needs to be there, together we will let the team know that last season is over and we are starting anew. We can finally focus on this season and leave the past where it belongs. An interesting side-note: two senior players on Walsh played for STVM with LeBron. Sound familiar? With the recent rash of D-II upsets over big-name schools (Findley beating OSU, Grand Valley State beating Michigan State), Akron had better be prepared to play and to win, even if they are still figuring some stuff out. Valpo Zip
How about that 16 point upset of Gardner Webb over #22 Kentucky in Kentucky?Didn't we beat GW by around 20 points last year? This should be the year where the zips pull some of those upsets. How about we start by winning the BP top of the world tournament?sounds good to me.
ziptrumpet87
I agree we had better win. Unfortunately I can't be there this evening, but I'll be there for the real games. Take good notes for us!
bUAkronG
I wish I were there right now!! But I have a physics test to study for. I'll be checking this thread often, let us know how it went!!!
UAZips
Akron 79Walsh 55Pretty decent crowd considering it was an exhibition. I'd guess around 2K. Walsh jumped out to a 9-2 lead early, Akron answered with a 20-0 run.
ZachTheZip
Middleton, the person I wanted to see play the most, was out with an injury.Sweich will likely redshirt. We foul too much.KD has a bit of learning to do still with this team. skip-zip
skhorbotly...Unfortunately, winning games in that Alaska tournament will likely not be considered upsets. Have you seen the teams in that tournament? I understand your desire to pull off some upsets early in the season, but we're not set up that way. In fact, are there any teams on our non-C schedule who we'll be considered underdogs against??

Hilltopper
zipfan 81 said: Is anyone going to let us know what they thought of the game? Here what I saw from the new guys;* McNees is going to be OK. He seemed in much better condition than what we saw in preseason last year. KD says he lost 12-15 lbs and it shows in his ability to run. he is a much better ball handler than I expected. He is definatly a scorer first. I thought he did OK on defense. *Bardo also looked OK. For a young big man he moved OK and didn't seem lost out there. I doubt that he will help much on offense. He did snag four rebounds and wasn't embarassed on defense. He will play alot if he can avoid dumb fouls.*Sweich is definately a project. He didn't even leave the bench until garbage time. He is very slow and looked a little lost out there. He did make one basket, but if that was his normal shot, it was ugly. He kind of shot puts it to the basket on a line drive. He needs to redshirt and let the game come to him this year at practice.* Steward was dressed but did not get into the game. During the post game show KD hinted that he will play if healthy and I got the impression that he was ahead of McNees on the depth chart before being hurt. Now for the returning players;*Quade looked ready to go. That little jump hook shot will serve him well this year. He got pushed around a bit on the boards.*Wood had a so-so night. Offensively he was not at his best. He did try a couple of short jumpers but they were ugly.*Dials also wasn't sharp on offense. He did look good running the show at the point.*Linhart was his usual scrappy self. Lots of floor burns and fights for loose balls.*Conyers looks like this could be his breakout season. Played under control and looked better on offense than last year.*Goddard will probably see some real minutes this season. He can still shoot. Defense, not so good.*Middleton DNP*McKnight had a weird game. Even though he was the leading scorer you would be hard pressed to explain how. He took some ugly shots and didn't rebound very well. Lets hope he finds his groove and settles into his role.It sounded like KD is counting on Roberts and B McKnight to contribute when they become eligable. All things considered it was a good night. ziptrumpet87
Quote The University of Akron did the expected Thursday night by defeating Walsh University 79-55 in an exhibition game before a crowd of 1,428 at Rhodes Arena. - ABJThat's more than were there for regular season games with Crawford! If they continue winning, KD won't have any problem filling the JAR.
Marty McFly
Was impressed with: McNees offensive shooting, No fear of shooting the three, Run and Gunning, New Uniforms (should I say Jeremiah’s capri’s?), Akron’s run to start the 2nd half that put game away, as Walsh wasn’t out of at the half (and allowed me and my antsy son an early exit), and finally- The balanced attack.Wasn’t impressed with: McNees defensively, No fear of shooting the three (this will win some games, but a cold night could haunt us), defensive rebounding. I think that the front court is going to have to get better on the defensive end rebounding b/c I find it hard to believe that they will be taller than most teams they face, and Finally - McNees’ socks (who authorized that?)Thought the crowd was good for an exhibition game, although I honestly thought that there was more maroon/gold there than blue/gold.Something else I noticed: A new look Ced Middleton? Had to do a double take, as he has lost the braids/corn rows from last season. Former Zip (and former Springfield coach) Ryan Andrick on the coaching sidelines from the Zips. Captain Kangaroo
Quote Former Zip (and former Springfield coach) Ryan Andrick on the coaching sidelines from the Zips.I wonder what odds you'd have gotten from Vegas 7 years ago if you speculated that in 2007-8 Zips Coach Dan Hipsher would be at South Florida as an assistant and sparring partner Ryan Andrick would be a coach on Akron's bench?1,000,000 - 1? Zip Watcher
If RA can teach a drop step to our young big men .. I'm happy to have him back. He did have a pretty good back to the basket game late in his career here. Imparting that to Bardo, Swiech, McKnight would go a long way to helping this team dominate the conference for years to come.
