Kangaroo Craig
5,000 capacity. Interesting that they're choosing to remain one of the smallest in the MAC.That was the first thing that I noticed. The place looks like a glorified high school gym.Why spend the $$ if you are not going to do it right. This place should be twice the size of what is being proposed. Doesn't their current building (Anderson Arena?) seat at least that many?
Agent Zero
Why would you build an arena double the size if you can't fill up the place you have now? I understand for future needs, but honestly, how often would they fill it up?

It could be used for concerts in winter, rallys, high-profile speakers, ect.

I understand for future needs, but honestly, how often would they fill it up?This is a good point. You can argue for a huge arena for Akron sometime down the road simply because of it's proximity (and being located within) to a huge population base. It will ALWAYS be difficult for schools like BG to draw huge crowds simply because of their status of being a "college town" located off the beaten trail. Nonetheless, if you read the article, it's an oxymoron of sorts. The donors talk about thinking bigger and how much better "smaller" schools are than the OSUs and Michigans of the world. The picture looks great, but I'd think they'd still want to push it to 7-8k. Something in the neighborhood of EMUs arena.

They should start at 2,500 and see how that goes.

Blue & Gold
In my spare time as I surf the net looking at new college arenas under construction, I am beginning to favor basketball-specific arenas. The arenas that are larger - like The Q, or Value City Arena, or even the Canton Convention Center, with enough floor space to host hockey and arena football games - IMO seem to have poorer sight lines for basketball. Basketball-specific arenas, though smaller in size, are still quite flexible - more than adequate space to hold major concerts - and offer perfect sightlines for basketball. I've listed some very interesting links below. The largest basketball-specific facility listed below is the U. of Virginia's, holding around 14,000. The smallest is the U. of Rhode Island's facility, holding around 7,500. Maybe I'm thinking too small, but I think a 10 - 12,000 seat basketball-specific arena would be ideal for downtown Akron. Many of you will probably disagree, and I may change my mind tomorrow! Some beautiful basketball-specific arenas that are very nice include:USC Trojans - The Galen Centerhttp://usctrojans.cstv.com/facilities/usc-galen-center.htmlMissouri State University - The JQH Arena (just came across this one last night; looks fantastic!)http://www.missouristate.edu/arena/?KEY=&a...CRIBER_CONTENT=St. Louis University - The Chaifetz Arenahttp://www.thechaifetzarena.com/University of Rhode Island - The Ryan Centerhttp://gorhody.cstv.com/facilities/uri-ryan-center.htmlUniversity of Virginia - The John Paul Jones Arenahttp://www.johnpauljonesarena.com/index.aspUniversity of Pittsburgh - Peterson Events Centerhttp://www.peterseneventscenter.com/index.asp
zipsbandman
I was expecting something a little nicer. It looks like a high school gym with chair-back seats. NIU's is nice and so is Eastern's. Oh well, still nicer than the JAR

Doesn't their current building (Anderson Arena?) seat at least that many?It currently holds 4,700...is 300 seats really worth it?They might as well make it 8,000 and use it for concerts and try to get more attractions to come there
Big Zip
The BG Arena actually looks like a newer version of what they currently have. I don't think there is any reason to go big with regard to the basketball arena. Would love to see Akron stay in the 7,000 seat range with every seat being a great view. If Duke is only 11,000 there is no reason to make ours any bigger than 7,000 -- heck 5,000 might be enough. Make it a must have ticket -- purchase in advance -- sell tickets for more. Scarcity drives interest.
ZippyRulz
There ought to be a way to build it big enough for graduations, big games, concerts, etc. and use partitions to make it smaller for most regular games. If we have a couple thousand graduating in the spring and they each bring some parents, siblings, grandparents, SO's, friends, etc. then 5,000 seats are not enough. Plus it would be nice to be able to host HS regionals, maybe a NCAA womens regional, maybe a Roadrunner Marathon event, maybe a NIHOF induction, concerts, etc. and have plenty of room. But then you could 'downsize' it and have the bandbox atmosphere for home games and especially televised games where you don't want a bunch of empty seats. Let'sGoZips94
That's a waste as of right now, but who knows. There program could sky rocket once they get the right players and personnel in there. Akron's did. You've gotta love the student section and how it goes up. I hate Akron's student section. When it goes up like that, there are different things you can do.
Marty McFly
The BG Arena actually looks like a newer version of what they currently have.I agree. I had to study the picture to notice the changes, which doesn't look a lot different than current, from what I recall when I was up there last month.
