I thought Baby Huey was decent in the paint when they got him the ball. As I see it: Tier 1: Miami; Zips; PCCC Tier 2: BG, Toledo, OU Tier 3: Buffalo; UMass (maybe with Freitag they squeak into Tier 2

Athens awaits the Zips Friday for am 8:00 p.m. game with the 11-9 Bobcats. The Bobcats are led by 6'2" senior guard Jackson Pavaletzke who leads the team in scoring (17.4 ppg) and assist (4 apg). 6'8" senior forward Aiden Hadaway is second on the team in scoring and first in rebounding at 14.1 ppg and 7.6 rpg. The natives are restless in Athens with Boals given the up and down nature of their season. The Zips have lost their last three games in the Convocation Center. There's also a watch party at the Barley House.

Can't do it. It's like the Ravens versus the Steelers.

Is this Akron's worst defensive team ever?
clarkwgriswold replied to 1981 grad's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I wouldn't put too much stock in yesterday's game. The Zips have had much worse defensive games this season. Much, not all of yesterday's success yesterday was the result of guys making tough shots over well- positioned defenders. Sometimes teams just get hot. Some of Dambrot's teams were sketchy on defense. However, during the 4 years with Zeke it all got cleaned up on the back end. Groce's first team here was 8th in the MAC in average points surrendered and 9th in opponent field goal percentage. They were regularly just "out-athleted." This year's squad is 7th in average points surrendered and 2nd in opponent FG%. The current team is not the worst. The fast pace of the offense gives both teams more possessions. They've had lapses which have hurt and can be cleaned up but they're never going to be at the top of the MAC on defense. Barre can help a little if he returns but he'll at best play 12-15 minutes a game and the biggest problem has been on perimeter traps and switches and recovering on help defense when the ball swings, and that's not him on the perimeter. -
Lebron paid homage to UA and the city with his new shoes which included the UA logo- https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/sports/nba/2026/01/18/lebron-james-nike-23-shoes-pay-tribute-to-akron-zips/88243766007/

The number one area girls player in today's mid-season top players in Greater Akron, Evelyn McKnight from Copley, is a.............Youngstown State recruit.

Looks like he's making progress as he's gone from a cast to a brace. Also, Sharron looked to be walking without a limp.

I'm perfectly fine with Miami winning every game until they lose to the Zips in Cleveland.

The Zips shuffle off to Buffalo for a Tuesday night contest against the Bulls. The Bulls are 13-5 coming off of a last second OT loss at Oxford. According to Gross this is the best Bulls team the current has had since his arrival and are very good offensively. Wisconsin transfer sophomore guard Daniel Freitag leads the Bulls in scoring and rebounding at at 20.3 ppg and 4.5 rpg. Junior guard Ryan Sabol is second in scoring at 17 ppg. They are 6th in offense and defense in the MAC.

They actually called a dribbler for a carry. What's next, a call for 3 seconds?

Very important question - what's the fish mascot?

Sharron not in uniform.

I think it certainly moves him up in the rotation but he won't take the minutes. When they came out for the second half Tuesday Bowen was in his place. I think Eric then came in for Bowen. I think Shammah's minutes increase and when they just have one true guard on the floor that guy like Bowen and Eric play what's essentially the two. In reality, this team is Tavari, Shammah, Sharron, Amani and a bunch of wings.

That kid was gonna get his shots. He was the most shameless shooter at the JAR since Antoine Davis!

....and the t-shirt gun!

This game is Youth Day and Mascot Day and there is also a dance cheer clinic. There's also some kind of discount on kid's tickets, so maybe they'll get as decent crowd. Don't forget, it's a 2:00 tip-off.

With a team made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores.

One more season after this one and there's no way the school is going to expend the money to pay 2 women's hoops coaches.

I realize they have a history of not living up to expectations but I think they will be decent this year. The MAC schedule maker has done them no favors as they've started the season against OU, Miami, UMASS, PCCC and Akron. When it all settles out I think they'll be in Cleveland and could cause some trouble for some teams.

WMU comes to Akron Saturday for a 2:00 tilt against the Zips. The Broncos come in at 7-10 fresh off of a 3 point loss to UMASS. They are 1-4 in the MAC with their only win coming against EMU. 5'10" junior guard JUCO transfer Jalen Griffin leads WMU in scoring at 15.5 ppg. 6'4" senior guard, Robert Morris transfer, Justice Williams is second in scoring at 13.7 ppg. Jayden Brewer, a 6'6" senior guard, leads the team in rebounding at 7.6 rpg while being their third leading scorer at 13.3 ppg.

Exactly. This team's propensity to let up with a big lead is maddening. Don't let up on the gas. It would be different if this happened with backups in the game late but it's happening with our vets on the floor.

The ice is back on Sharon's ankle.

Grrrrrr, letting up and getting sloppy again.

The next time I gripe about the Zips perimeter defense remind me of Ball State's.
