The World of College Basketball

Duquesne plays its annual game at SVSM this Saturday at 4:00 against Northeastern. I've been to 2 or 3 of these now and its interesting to watch a D1 basketball game in that intimate of a setting. I wasn't a fan at the start of these as I was afraid it was in part a recruiting ploy but I haven't seen that happening. It's free D1 basketball in our own backyard., -
Games 5, 6 & 7- The Paradise Jam

I really think they have a chance at success in this tournament. The field is decent but not overly strong. Charleston is 2-2 with with wins over South Carolina State and Tusculum (one for Captain's list!) and losses to Liberty and Florida Atlantic. Evansville is 2-2 with wins over Henderson State and Oakland City and losses to Purdue (by 31) and Middle Tennessee. Green Bay is 1-4 with a win over Ripon (another one for Captain's list and losses to Kansas, Buffalo, St. Thomas and Minnesota. Iona is 3-0 with wins over Hofstra, Kansas City and Fordham. Oregon State is 3-0 with wins over N. D. State, UIC and North Texas. UMASS is 3-1 with wins over Brown, Rhode Island College and Albany and a loss to Marshall. Yale is 3-0 with wins over Navy, Quinnipiac and Stony Brook. -
The Zips head off to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands next weekend for the Paradise Jam. The Jam includes, Iona, Oregon State, Evansville, Charleston, UMASS, Yale and Green Bay. The Zips open up Friday against Iona. The Gaels are currently 3-0 and play Princeton Tuesday. If the Zips beat Iona, they will play the winner of Evansville/Oregon State on Sunday. Lose and they play the loser on Saturday. The tournament ends Monday. It would be sweet to make it through the bracket and take revenge on Yale for the title.

Somebody has to step up and be the sociable, affable, ***-kisser to make up for JoMo's inability or unwillingness to be that guy in chasing NIL money. Maybe that's Goodrich. I've liked what I've seen so far from him. The most frustrating thing about the six sacks is that everyone watching the game saw them coming other than Finley and JoMo. Many of them were in situations where the Zips went 4 or 5 wide and PCCC blitzed and just outnumbered the Zips linemen. How about and audible or an adjustment or two?

Game 3- Penn State- Shenago
clarkwgriswold replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I suspect Brisco was brought in at a time when it was anticipated that the program would continue in its traditional half court offense, where a less mobile big could succeed. That's also when Okonkwo was brought in. Groce then saw what he had personnel-wise and decided that up-tempo was the way to go. Okonkwo adapted but was never completely that guy. Barre was appealing in the portal as he is a guy who can get up and down. I'm not sure Brisco is a fit in the offense as presently constructed. However, at the same time, it's tough to judge the kid 12 minutes into his college basketball career. -
Purdue/Alabama was a good game. Purdue is really solid. Two very good bigs and a strong 7'4" backup, though Trey Kaufman-Reay who was playing his first game left the game hurt with a couple of minutes left. The guards are also very good. I can see the Zips competing on the perimeter but the inside is going to be very tough. The Boilermakers killed a very athletic and solid Bama squad on the boards.

I know someone who was in the administration when Tressel came to U of A. The collective expectation was that he was going to be a lazy figurehead easing into retirement. To their surprise and pleasure, he worked very hard and did well in the job. The school could use a guy like that now to help make up for their introvert head coach.

Game 3- Penn State- Shenago

As Blue & Gold stated, there wasn't a whole lot that could be taken away because of the size and talent disparity, but they both looked okay. Brisco is definitely a big body but I wonder if he can get up and down the court in the way that this offense demands of its big men. Barre appears to have the ability to get up and down, and I understand that is why he was brought in, however, the results have yet to be seen. -

Groce just said in the post-game that Stankovic was sick the last couple of days and that he wasn't planning on playing him but he was feeling better and wanted to play. -
