  1. A couple of thoughts here...Opening that end zone would probably add more like 5,000 seats. But, I don't really think we need them at this point. If only the people collecting attendance figures really knew how many (few) fans were really at Akron games this year.
  2. I hope this also means that they CAN'T WIN come Wednesday night.
  3. timmyboy. After being around Akron's football program for 25 years, I can tell you that the coaches often have to decide who they have a chance to get, and who they do not.In this case, if he is being actively recruited by Big-10 schools, Akron's coaches may very well be wanting to focus their attention on someone else that is more likely to be swayed to choose a MAC level school.Sure, I'd like to be stealing players away from Big-10 schools too, but it just doesn't happen often enough to justify using our resources in those attempts.
  4. I'm not surprise, considering what we've seen already this year.
  5. You guys are going to love this....I was watching the news this evening, and they were talking about how 40,000 Buckeye "fans" attended a send-off rally last week as the team was leaving for Arizona.Today, when the busses pulled into the athletic center in Columbus, there were 2 fans waiting to welcome them home. That's right....TWO. Not two thousand, or two hundred. TWO !!!!Like I always say, actions speak for themselves. There are sooooooooo many people in this state that "become" Buckeye fans when they appear to be challenging for a title.I'm still laughing histerically Go Zips !!
  6. Zips Fan......well put. I could not have said it better myself. Go Zips !!
  7. Zip81....you're right!! I remember it clearly now since I was still a student at the time.Gerry Faust coached us for one more year as a I-AA in the OVC after he was hired, so we didn't start playing IA until the 1987 football season.
  8. Wow. I don't like that schedule either. I guess it's hard to determine if it really affects attendance, but it sure gives people the "opportunity" to stay home, which certainly doesn't help.I'm not sure if putting our games on a seldom-watched local cable channel is really going to help our visibility a whole heck of a lot. Maybe a few channel-surfers will tune in from time to time. Other than that, the only watchers will be people who are already fans, and want to watch the game.
  9. Hey guys, thanks for all of the research.Since Zip81's timeline says that we joined the OVC starting in 1981, then the rest of the last 25 years should look like this...Div I-AA, Ohio Valley Conference, 1981-1985Div I-A, Independent, 1986-1991Div. 1-A, MAC, 1992 to PresentI'd like for everyone to keep the faith, and realize that the opportunity to play with the "big boys" is better than it has ever been, and will continue to get better. This is in large part due to the NCAA lowering the number of scholarship players a few years back. It simply keeps pushing more and more talented players further down the line to the "lesser" 1-A schools.Again, I'd love to see Akron be the next Boise State or Louisville. So many of the pieces necessary to accomplish this are in place (we're in a highly populated area, have a new fieldhouse and training facilities) and hopefully the remaining pieces that we mention all the time will fall into place soon as well (investment in a first-rate stadium, marketing dept., etc.).I'm glad someone created this website. It's one of the only opportunities most of us get to converse with fellow die hard fans, and brainstorm about our future as an athletic program, and how to improve it.
  10. Blue and Gold. He was an assistant coach in the MAC, but it wasn't at Akron. He was an assistant for a short time for Miami (OH), but his tenure in Akron was as a grad assistant way back in the 70's, about 15 years before we were in the MAC.
  11. Florida's DEFENSIVE speed was killing Ohio State. Their receivers were covered the entire game, and their offenisve lineman were too slow to react to pass rushes. I'm sure some of the other SEC teams, that recruit similar talent, would have created some of the same problems for Ohio State. Who proclaims that Ohio State is Ohio's team? Your team is whoever you want your team to be. Our great state has 8 teams that play D-1A in football. That gives you quite a few choices. And there is even one other one that has OHIO in their name. I've got news for all of you "I support Ohio State because I know they have a chance to win a title every year" fans.....Over the last twenty or so years, with scholarship limitations, etc., the gap continues to close between the bottom teams and the top teams in 1-A football. There will be more Boise State performances in the years to come, and the next one just might be US.GO ZIPS !!
  12. Later in the season, when it really counts. We'll beat these guys.
  13. WOW...how can a non-starter from Akron think he can make it in the NFL? This is a shocker, and a big blow. If we're this thin on the D-line, the 3-3-5 defense is going to be here to stay for quite some time.
  14. Bubba is one of OU's stars, and he was about to become a bench-dweller on our roster. Enough said. Akron simply has more talent and more depth. Zips by 14 in this one.
  15. InTheZone....my thoughts exactly. This nation was built on the courageous acts of its people, and I pray for our soldiers daily. People like Reid and Pelosi...well...their ignorant comments simply speak for themselves. We all love the Zips...but I hope we all love the USA and our freedoms even more.
  16. Wow. This topic really generates some opinions.I want JD to be given time, but I don't want another 9-year period of settling for mediocrity, like we did with Lee Owens. The Faust situation was more understandable. He had to start the 1-A program from absolutely nothing, and we had no expectations at that point. Heck, we were the first school to even try to turn 1-A from 1-AA, and there was no how-to manual for how to get it done. This is a different time. We now have just as many scholarships to give as every other school in our division, and have been in this situation for quite a few years. We have great practice and training facilities, and people are saying that our recruiting classes have been top notch. The MAC is getting better across the board. Last year was a perfect indication. Now, JD needs to show that he is keeping pace. And unfortunately for him, winning a championship naturally raises expectations.
  17. GP1 - I also do not see any chance for Getsy to make an NFL roster. Even in the Ken Dorsey role.I've met him, he's a great kid, and does well academically. He's a great role model for young student athletes. He also gave us some of the most exciting moments ever in Akron football. But his senior year may well have guaranteed that he'll never play football again, in any league.
  18. Free publicity is a wonderful thing. I hope the University does the smart thing and uses it for all it's worth.
  19. I want some thoughts on this.Bubba is one of OU's stars, and he was going to start spending alot more time on the bench if he stayed in Akron.Does anyone else think this may show that Akron is far ahead of OU in their depth of talent right now?
  20. I like the C+ grade.Every win so far is a game that we should have won.Had we beaten both UIC and UALR, I'd give them an "A" Grade, even with the loss to Nevada. I wished I had seen our effort in the Nevada game every game this year. This team is hard to beat when everyone is giving their all. I like the point about the long list of seniors that have not had their best year in their senior season. I pray that Romeo doesn't get added to this list.
  21. I really don't understand why YSU felt they could play with us when they rely on one player to carry them. This Akron team has so many weapons, and is really developing some depth, thanks to guys like Quade and Cedrick. And when we decide to "get after people" defensively (as Dambrot says) we're very very hard to beat.I can't wait for the OU game. And better yet, I can't wait until OU comes here to see the AK-Rowdies get all over Bubba !!
  22. OU badly wanted Bubba, and we were starting to bench him. I think that says volumes about where the two teams stand, personnel wise.
  23. Seems to me like it shouldn't be a big deal to pay a student worker, or an intern to work in the ticket office during normal business hours for the week between Christmas and New Years.
  24. I figured the UIC loss would hurt us, but the Nevada loss would help us. I just can't see the justification for why we dropped so much after losing by 2 points to the #20 team in the country.
  25. During the course of the season, people really started to notice Kennedy's weakness as a power runner. He appears to be a good open field runner, but may lack breakaway speed. All of this together really makes me question his future as our #1 back, but I sincerely hope that his perceived liabilities were only due to his injury problems.
