  2. I do think it is possible for the MAC to get two teams into the NCAA. Its just not likely as every time a team puts themselves in serious at-large consideration they go ahead and win the conference tourney anyway. One of these years, though, I hope we see two teams that are at-large worthy in the MAC. I do think the conference overall is starting to trend upward again a bit. That being said I believe you are absolutely correct when you say the entire conference needs to schedule better. That doesn't mean teams expected to be at the bottom need to go out and get a murderer's row schedule but just get more teams that are comparable to themselves and a few where they are playing "up". The MAC schools need to avoid having 4 and 5 true cupcakes (sometimes 1 or 2 can actually help a team) on their schedule and the entire conference will benefit.

  3. The year we think RPI is unimportant the committee will decide it is important. That's the problem with the committee- any member is free to use whatever measure they want, whether it's RPI, Kenpom, pompom, coin flip or magic 8 ball.

  4. We know what happened to Akron in the NIT and most realize that Buffalo bowed out of the NCAA in the first round to the Miami Hurricanes. I thought is was worth mentioning, though, that Ohio has made it to the CBI semifinals and will host Morehead State Wednesday night. If the Bobcats win they will face the winner of Vermont at Nevada in a best of 3 series guaranteeing games being played on both campuses. Ball State has had two late comeback wins and is now in the quarterfinals of the CiT. They will play at Columbia of the Ivy League Wednesday night at 7:00. That game can be seen on collegeinsider.com website. Our arch rival declined to accept any postseason invitations. Finally, Northern Illinois will play in the inaugural Vegas 16 postseason tournament. That three consecutive day event has 16 teams in a single elimination format but is unique because all 15 games are played in the same venue. NIU will open play in the tourney against UCSB on March 28 at 2:30pm. This will be a battle of teams which share Akron as a common opponent this season.

  5. My God. 1) I've never been in Boyett's situation, nor do I know the exact details of what happened, but I'm not going to pretend to know exactly how I would handle it. 2) There is quite a difference between you "letting your friend in" (read:him knowingly being in your apartment) vs someone unknowingly being in your apartment at 3am in the morning in an area where robberies are quite prevalent. 3) Whoever's coach and/or boss we are talking about has no authority to infringe on your 2nd amendment right with what is presumed LEGALLY owned. 4) You don't need any license to legally own a handgun in Ohio. Just be 21 and pass a background check. 5) If Pratt himself agreed it was an accident, take your tin foil hats off and take what he said at face value. He has no incentive to cover for somebody who shot him.

  6. As long as he has a license for it and doesn't carry it on campus or anyplace where it is illegal and isn't flaunting it around in a club, I can't see why there would be a problem with him utilizing his 2nd amendment right. Can't blame him for wanting to own a gun in Akron where home invasion is a legitimate threat. In college I've had friends robbed at gun point in their own house. I don't know the full story so I'm going to withhold further judgment. PS. This is coming from a registered democrat and I'm not looking to start a political debate. Just saying that if he is legally allowed having the gun, there shouldn't be a problem that he owns it.

  7. I said you can't claim bias because St. Bonaventure plays in an as good, if not better, basketball conference (I'll say better) as Tulane and Wichita State and also finished with an RPI that was +17 better than Wichita State and +28 better than Tulane. Both of those teams got in over St. Bonaventure. It wasn't biased that got Wichita State and Tulane in over St. Bonaventure. This was your exact quote. "RPI is certainly well recognized, therefore getting a high RPI score makes an argument for your school. Just do what we have to do to make that number higher." Every year it seems the record gets broken for the highest RPI to not make the tournament. Do you really not see that it has been losing its value every year? RPI is an easy system to game. 75% of it is based off of your opponents winning % and your opponents opponents winning %. Any game vs. a none D1 school isn't included in the formula. Games vs. MEAC and SWAC teams drive your RPI numbers down as they typically have poor records and play a conference schedule vs. teams with poor records. The Zips could instantly improve their RPI by removing those teams from the schedule and replacing them with more games vs. Malone, Hiram, Mount Union, etc. because those teams wouldn't factor into the RPI formula. Do you think the selection committee would view that as more favorable? Edit: Here is an excerpt that I pulled from the New York Times quoting the selection committee chairmen...“The common metrics most of us use are KenPom, Sagarin, L.R.M.C., B.P.I., K.P.I.,” the committee chairman, Oklahoma Athletic Director Joe Castiglione, told reporters Wednesday, sounding like an economist rattling off the names of various federal departments.

  8. That's exactly my point. Even during the selection show, you heard about RPI, bad losses, and big wins used randomly to explain why certain teams got in, and certain ones did not. But apparently that's not stopping a few from believing that they have the selection committee figured out.

  9. For what it's worth I work with a guy that goes to most of the state semifinals and all the state finals every year. He told me KD was sitting three rows in front of him during the Friday night D-1 semifinal game between Westerville South and Garfield Heights. Since I saw Westerville South in person I know their top 6 players are 5 seniors and a junior Ohio State commit so I think it's safe to say if he was there with recruiting in mind he was looking at someone from Garfield Heights.

  10. So, let me get this straight. . .the Big 10 shouldn't get 7 teams in because they are unworthy and a mid-major like our beloved Zips should be in line for one of those spots (by whatever rationale). Didn't that whole argument get blown to Hell when the Zips got beat by the 8th best team in that league? I mean, damn.

  11. Looks like Emmanuel right now is one of the 6 young men in the running for the top drawer soccer 18 and under soccer player of the year. As a zip fan, I am very glad that two members of the Chicago Magic team (Jesus Perez and Emmanuel Sabbi) will be continuing to build on their teamwork and success as Akron Zips in the fall. http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-soccer-articles/club-poty:-sanchez-sabbi-go-international_aid39013

  12. This is why the program is gonna miss Jake & Reggie next year. Jake posted this message on Facebook last night: "My passion and love for this game is indescribable. I gave my body, my heart, and my soul to The University of Akron everyday for the last 4 years. Words cannot describe how thankful I am to have been given the opportunity to play basketball to this point of my life. This game has given me so many memories of happiness, sadness, anger, and hurt but I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. To the people that God has placed in my life, I cannot thank you enough for your love, your support, and encouragement throughout my entire career. You all have helped me in some way or another get me to where I am today. The words of kindness that you've shown me over the last 4 years means more then you will ever know. I want to thank The University of Akron's faculty, athletic program, and fans for everything they have provided for me over the last four years of athletics and academics. People may view this last season as a fail because we didn't make it to the "big dance" or win the tournament but this season was far from a failure. This season was my favorite of the 4 because of how God worked in this team. He created a new culture within this team to love one another, to play with a team first mindset, and to serve others. I have been extremely blessed to have played with amazing teammates throughout the last 4 years and play for caring coaches. Akron Basketball is a family and once you're in you'll always be a part of that family. You never really think the game will come to an end but it will just as your life ends at some point in time. Do not take moments in time for granted because when it's over, it's over. There's no going back to fix or change things. Love God and love others that's the greatest commandment. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these." (Mark 12:30-31) As for me and my future, I don't know what's in store next. I know that God will show me his path for my life and I will follow it. “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declared the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, p plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11)" Jake & Reggie were exceptional leaders. I hope fresh leadership steps up next season. Big leadership shoes to fill.
