  2. yes, there is an automatic bid Akron was 50 in RPI before yesterday’s games Zips are now 56 (Buffalo is 60 and W. Virginia is #14) UCLA is now 4-3-1 after they lost 4-0 to Washington (UCLA is #41 in RPI) San Diego State is now 5-1-3 after tieing Oregon State (4-3-2)…SDSU is 45 in RPI and OSU is 97 Cal Santa Barbara dropped to 4-5-1 as they tied UC Riverside 2-2 (UCSB us #92 in RPI) Coach Embick put together a strong schedule but the zip opponents are not providing much help in the RPI

  3. Blue and Gold. I think it's always great when people are generating thoughts about how we can get more people involved. Let me make a comment about your observation that the big high schools in the area have great student involvement. You're saying that we should contact these people and ask for their "leadership". But, are many of these people leaders, or just followers? You might be able to tap them for ideas, but I would contend that almost all of them simply latched on to something that was already well underway. That's what we need to do here. We have to create something that makes them WANT to participate. That wave of students that participated in the Soccer Student Section for about a 5 year period did so because something was created that interested them. It's obviously not an easy thing to do here.

  4. Akron marathon story So far I have been impressed with what Matt Wilson has been doing in his role as interim president. If this is the kind of kid he raises, then his impact on the students at UA should be nothing but positive.

  5. I'm at the Green vs Ellet game tonight. Bridges has already scored 3 touchdowns in the first 9 minutes of the game. The kid is REALLY fast!

  6. This has turned into a fun discussion. But let me clarify my above rant (and reason for asking about D-1 football in communities across the country)... it was originally intended to point out that there is in fact no story in today's ABJ. Today (and every day), however, there is a fresh Cleveland Browns story.

  7. I wouldn't consider MTSU in Nashville. Murfreesboro is as close to Nashville as Akron is to Cleveland.

  8. I'd say so. With a win Louisville has a 94% chance of making the postseason. That number falls to 51% with a loss.

  9. Both STVM & Hoban have great student cheer sections (especially Hoban - wow!). Wonder if we could tap the UA students who went to STVM & Hoban & simply ask them to start to take leadership w/ the Zips' student section? It might be a step toward changing the apathetic student culture. Jackson & Hudson also have great student sections. And there are plenty of others. Could we intentionally target these students from around the Akron area and explicitly ask for their help/leadership? Just by looking at the InfoCision seating chart & doing the math, it looks like the student section would seat around 750-ish. What if each player was allowed 3 "Special Student Guests" where they invite 3 friends. These friends get a special ticket that says, "Thank You for Supporting Me" & a pizza/pasta dinner in the Student Center before the game. An administrator talks to the students and thanks them for supporting their friend - it means a lot to them - after putting in hours upon hours of hard work & then playing a violent sport - to see friends in the stands. Take this time together to teach them a new cheer once in a while. Teach the words to the alma mater & fight song. Teach them the history of UA football & show them the weekly hype-video. Then march them all to the Info (before the pregame band show & before the Zips take the field), sit them together in their assigned seats, where t-shits are waiting for them - maybe the t-shirt has the player's # on the back? During the game have a special vendor for the "Special Student Friends" section occasionally come around & pass out free popcorn, hotdogs & coke. Do this for every home game. Idk. If every player asks 3 friends to come (we'd have to figure out a way not to duplicate friends) that's over 300.

  10. Wrong Game. He's talking about the 2003 game. You're thinking of the 2006 game that we lost at Kent, which was under Brookhart, right after the MAC title the year before, and the big road win against North Carolina State.

  11. If true this is best for Marcus & I'm 100% all for it... but of course disappointed because I enjoy watching him play so much. Here's to a speedy and full recovery and to representing the Zips well in the NFL. P.s. It's been pretty obvious he's been playing hurt this year.

  12. Good programs bring in a QB every year. Need depth, and not everyone you have turns out how you think they might. I don't want a QB afraid of competition on the roster anyway
