Rob is a great hire for Akron. He's a tireless recruiter who connects with players very well. The sky will be the limit for the Zips!5 points

I've always been a "pro-transfer guy" in cases where a coach leaves a school as that player-coach relationship is often what drew a kid to a school in the fist place. Now that it's "my school", I am good and pi$$ed off that these kids are jumping ship, especially those jumping to Duquesne, but I'd be a hypocrite if I pitched a fit about it. Good luck to them. Time to move on.2 points

Maybe Noah will go do Dewkane. I'm sure he will be guaranteed the keys to the team like he was here.2 points

The landscape of recruiting has changed. Last time I looked there were over 400 names on the transfer list at verbalcommits.com. I'm sure Groce is not just sitting on his hands and is actively looking for more players. It's just going to take some time.2 points

And to be clear, I am not saying Nick Dials isn't worth having or is a bad coach. I am just saying it's lazy rationale if your only reason for wanting him is because he has UA ties.2 points

A former player, sure - perhaps Matt Futch, or hopefully Rome &/or Dru III one day. But, other than Thomas, I'm relieved no one on the current staff was retained. We sincerely needed a very real reboot & Duquesne bailed us out of a situation which was becoming tedious and awkward. Zips athletics is one of the three passions of my life, and even I had a hard time dragging myself to the JAR last year. Thank you, Dukies Hope you enjoy2 points

Aaron's always been my pick to win the Jimmy Conyers/Deji Ibitayo senior season award. If he doesn't put it together his senior year, I don't think it will because he didn't get the opportunity.1 point

My Missouri buddy (who I've now mentioned here several times) had nothing but great things to say about Rob and said that even in departing, he did it with class. I won't get into specifics, but he said that Fulford would've landed both 5-star Thomas Bryant (Indiana) and 4-star Ted Kapita (North Carolina State) if Kim Anderson didn't botch the recruitments. Both were Huntington Prep guys who played for Fulford. The Ted Kapita story I was told, if true (and I have no reason to believe it isn't), shows how out of touch Anderson was in recruiting. Lets just say, Anderson is probably the perfect candidate for the Oral Roberts position. An interesting note, before Kapita went to Huntington Prep, he played a year at Spire Institute in Geneva. Spire, with its world class facilities, is trying to become a player on the prep/post-secondary basketball scene. They have produced a bunch of D1 guys the past couple of years and have a couple highly ranked guys coming up. I'm not sure if Fulford has any ties there, or if there was any sort of bad blood with Kapita leaving to Huntington Prep, but it could be nice having a guy who is familiar with those prep school type programs since we now have one in our back yard that is producing a lot of college talent.1 point

This whole Dambrot leaving really ticks me off!! If you want to leave, fine go ahead and go. The whole "I am an Akron guy"" Blah blah blah! was just a bunch of bullshit. He has dropped to pond scum in my mind. Taking any and every player he can with him. He is a disgrace to this University! I would like to say I wish him well, but in truth I hope he implodes and gets canned!!!!!!1 point

I wonder if these kids ever stop to wonder why they weren't offered by any A-10 schools coming out of high school.1 point

I'd imagine he knows that. Duquesne was a 10-22 team last year and would have been a below average MAC team. It is going to take time to rebuild and frankly TDM and Hughes are upgrades over players who played those type of roles for them last season.1 point

KD is going to be in for a rude awakening when he realizes he can't compete in the A-10 with average at best MAC level talent.1 point

That's kinda what I'm thinking. Good luck to them turning the corner anytime soon in the A-10 with MAC bench players.1 point

President Wilson was involved in the hire obviously. Wilson saved our university close to $400,000 to 500,000 each year with his salary. Also, selling the house will garner the university maybe $600,000. Then Wilson, Williams, and Van Horn (like them or hate them) hired a coach who saves us around $1 million for his first two years. President Wilson and Coach Groce (yes this is a very, very rough estimate) have saved the university around $2.5 to $3 million, but a few donors are pulling their small change from the Zfund. I think the University and the program will be just fine. Even "Joe Akron" voted this was a good hire. What more do you people want?1 point

Do these people understand that KD is the one who left and that he was NOT fired?!!! What was the AD supposed to do?1 point

Lets just throw everything into this thread. :-) Charlie Spikes was used as a reference in Cheers as the player Sam Malone almost ended his career against. :).1 point

Jimond is already on year 3 of his NCAA eligibility clock. If he were to transfer he would have to give up a year of playing time unless he was a grad transfer. Plus I really think he enjoys playing close to home.1 point

I have no idea who Tayvis Powell is, or why I was supposed to hate your reference to him. But I see the picture you are trying to paint, and I like it. I see that he's a key guy who is committed to staying. However, I have not heard anything at all about him being courted by anyone else.1 point

You talkin bout THE Charlie Spikes? The one of mid-70's-ish Cleveland Indians fame? Now I know you're probably an old man like me.1 point
