  2. Non profits don't have to lose money. I think the problem is a lot of people don't know what a non profit is. The NCAAs most recently filed 990 shows 7.7 mil net income. 9 mil was investment income from their assets. Their programs therefore lost 1.3 million bucks. A 501c3 needs to have a charitable purpose, and I think an organization that helps thousands get through college at a reduced price or free would probably fit the bill. Furthermore institutions don't "hide behind non profit status." Public schools are government. They aren't even non-profits

  9. Reading through some transcripts this morning. This is from QB coach Randy Fichtner regarding how important a big arm is in the NFL. I thought it was interesting that the two QB's he mentioned were from the MAC. "I think it’s a must. We all talk about it. I’ve coached guys at different levels and it’s been unique to see because you see guys that can understand the game and make very quick decisions and the ball comes out. And if that arm strength isn’t elite like Ben (Roethlisberger), like Byron Leftwich, like a handful of guys in this league that have that kind of arm, you have to win above the neck and the ball has to come out on time. Decisions have to be made and you’re talking about delivery and getting the ball out. So to me, it starts with arm strength, but I’ve been able to see others that didn’t necessarily have that elite arm be very successful in their system."

  10. I'll never argue his value as an employee, because of what he generates. In the business world, he's probably a fantastic bargain. What makes me sick, and always will, is that someone is making this much money working in intercollegiate athletics at a public University. He's surely become the John Wooden of college football. But what has happened over the last 40 years to escalate this money machine to this level is pretty disheartening to me. I'd be happy to return to the days where Harvard, Yale, Army and Navy were the college football powers. That was real COLLEGE football.

  11. Well, well. I've been trying to figure out why everyone in the concourse is running into each other all the time. I guess I just figure it out. Thanks. (insert wobbly drunk Zips Fan emoticon here)

  12. I know this is preaching to the choir here, and I don't know where else to post this, but anyway...I'm travelling this week on business and I'm in the ice capitol of the world, Buffalo. The town has three pro teams, multiple high school teams, and a newspaper about the size of the ABJ. Low and behold, I picked up the morning paper yesterday at breakfast and there was an article on the U at B tennis teams! Two artlicles, one on the mens team and one on the womens team. And an additional article on the Buffs that made the NFL draft. And an article on the softball team was in today's morning paper. All in the same sports section that had articles on the Bills recent draft, NHL games, local high school games, etc. I kept rubbing my eyes, thinking how it would be nice to see just ONE article on a Zips team a week, let alone multiple ones each day! This story plays out for me every week. I'm travelling for business almost every week, and many times I'm in a college or university town for the evening,, and I see coverage EVERY DAY in the local paper about whatever sports the local U or C is involved in. Oh yeah, to make matters worse, the local Fox affiliate here in Buffalo ran a story last night about the UB softball team! Just needed to vent....thanks for listening....GT, you listening?
