If you are a homer that wants to just say I am trolling, then please don't read any further. If you only want rah rah and say how great everything is, then please don't read any further. if you want to have an open and rational discussion, then let's do it. NIU beat Beat Nebraska today. other MAC teams have beaten big time programs every year. When is Akron just going to be competitive with a major program? Not that ISU is major, but they are above the MAC. Before you want to call me a troll, until I moved out of state I was at nearly every home game and at least 2 road games every year. What some call trolling, I call being a passionate fan. I am sure certain mods will delete this thread because they don't want real discussion, so be it. I know some hate me here because I happen to have graduated from 2 different schools, but I can guarantee you that I have been to many, many, many more Akron games than to my other Alma Mater. I am tired of the lack of discipine of Bowden and his teams. I am sick of the lack of discipline. I lost count of how many stupid personal fouls there were in this game. And most were well deserved. Woodson whines non stop. Bell facemasks when a guy is wrapped up in a pile for 4th down, Kato comes in down by a ton and actually taunts a down player on the side line. Then after a nice pass, he throws a horrible pick and then starts crap on the ISU sideline. If he can grow up, he could be a real player in the MAC. That's a big IF. I doubt TB even says anything to him. Every time they show TB he is just standing there. He isn't talking to his team, his assistants or anyone. He is just watching like a fan. I did see him clap after an ISU first down though. Our recruiting is below average and there is no sign of it getting better. I don't want to hear how many verbals we have when most have Akron as their best offer. If the others have great senior seasons and get other offers, they will be gone too. Then of course, I would guess less than 2/3 of the current verbals actually ever show up on the game day roster. Best facilities and stadium in the MAC, yet we aren't better than when we were in the Rubber Bowl and didn't have the Stile Field House. The really sad thing is I don't know if we can get better than TB. SMH. Now go ahead and attack. i could not care any less.3 points

I have seen some talent but his judgement is poor on the field. Its hard to train a fool. Alex Ramart is the next Zips starting QB. Our problem is not a qb problem. I am honestly amazed at the unrealistic expectations of Zips fans.3 points

Where to start.... Iowa State is a program that I think is on the rise but they are not a team that should have beaten us as bad as they did today. This is a game we could have won if we played our best, and at worst should have lost by the 9 or 10 points the spread was. We showed the ability to stop them and drive on them WITH EASE. Their DL (I don't know if they are any good or not) seemed to dominate our O-line as we were not opening up any holes in the run game. I am still not impressed with our WRs. I would credit some sacks to them. Those I believe are our two weak points on the team, but I do think we have enough talent to have another bowl season so I am not throwing in the towel yet. We do play in the MAC... With that said, my patience with the coaching staff is wearing very thin. We are still dealing with the same crap that we have been since year 1. Numerous costly penalties and turnovers. We always seems to make the worst of situations. Going for it on 4th down? Offensive line jumps. Ball gets deflected right in your hands for a possible interception? Drop. Fumble in the open field? We try and pick it up and run instead of jump on it and the offense recovers. Blown coverage. Subs look confused everytime one comes in on defense. Hell our defense always looks confused and its rare they are lined up on time. Time after time after time. These are not the plays of winning football program. No offense to Nick Johns, but I have trouble believing a player who was a QB not two weeks ago is one of our best 11 players to put on kickoff. He got knocked on his ass time after time and their wasn't even a return! Were Wolf and Bickley healthy enough to play or not? If they were, I see no reason why our best WRs did not start the game. If they weren't, why did we play them at all? Makes no sense to me. Darian Dailey in my opinion is a pretty darn good player. I see no reason why Jordan George (who I like, but think is playing out of position - even though he did have good coverage on that first TD), is getting so much playing time over him. I thought the Alvin Davis targeting call was a joke in real-time. It looked like your standard football play to me, but I did not see a replay. It was apparently egregious enough for the refs to uphold. That is another play that cost us. I didn't see the Kato taunt as I left before then, but that is very disappointing on multiple levels if what I've read is correct. Like I said, based on getting a read on a similarly talented opponent, I think we have enough talent to have a bowl season. We still need a WR or two to step up and I think holes will be there for Ball come conference play. A lot of our issues, to me, are a result of poor coaching. Injuries can't be used as an excuse (yet anyways). We need to beat the teams we are supposed to beat and finally get over the hump vs a decent team or two. If not, it's time to start looking for fresh blood to lead the program.3 points

Some of us have been awake for a while but are sick of getting attacked for even thinking TB isn't the answer.3 points

Shutz's card was absolutely warranted. Not because of the tackle itself but because Nate was the last defender when opposition had "clear path to goal ". Poor anticipation and positioning by the defensive unit as a whole was at fault on that play. Given the mess he was already in, Nate did the right thing in taking down the guy, and Nate made that decision in a nano second. It cannot be proven, but Shultz likely preserved the draw. I do NOT mean to insinuate that Nate or any other Zip played well.2 points

Some good points here. I sure hope it's not time to turn the page, but it was pretty unanimous at our after-game tailgate that people have really given up on any future with this staff. Milwee seemed to get the brunt of it. And the "Bowden aura" is long gone. The perception that they're building teams from year-to-year instead of "building a program" keeps coming up. So does projections about this team maybe winning no more than 4 games. And the fact that Bowden has only beaten one team with a winning record returned to the surface. Even though it bums me out, I have to admit that we failed miserably in our first real "measuring stick game" of the season. We got embarrassed at home by a team that will probably finish somewhere near the bottom of the Big 12. And watching things unravel the way they did during the 2nd half of that game certainly has to make some people believe that a change is imminent.2 points

No way to sugar coat that our midfield is a mess. No connection from back to front. Sloppy and errant passes. Ill advised and slow passes backward, too. Need badly to clean this up.2 points

The other reason we're "waking up" now is, we bought into the conventional wisdom on the board that 1 - you can't tell anything about this team by what you saw at Penn State, and 2 - you can't tell anything about this team by what you saw against APD. So here we are, and we got to see what it is we got - Bupkis. I wish we had Butkis (Mike that is) but we have Bupkis2 points

That would have sent a message that we have high standards which all players must uphold. Cheap crap is not tolerable. The bench can teach many good lessons if the players want to learn. If not, get rid of them. Being, and acting, first class should be one of our highest core values.2 points

I have purposely avoided posting here thus far this season. And,I could not articulate it any better than Buckzip. I watched much of the PSU game. Was at the Ark. P-B game. Was at the ISU game yesterday. I wanted to see the Zips actually be competitive against a below average Big 12 team. In reality the reason that the Zips were even within sniffing distance going into the 2nd half was because ISU was 'trying' to do things to themselves that allowed Akron to hang around. But alas, ISU dropped the hammer in the 2nd half and the ZIPS couldn't answer. What have I seen the first 3 weeks? 1) A QB who has definitely lost something. No matter what you may want to say, Woodson's arm is still not 'right'.And it seems obvious that he is trying to protect it by avoiding running. I think the coaching staff probably told him at half time to stop holding the ball so long(which he does to a fault) and either run or ditch the throw. The guy sitting behind me remarked that his best looking pass of the day was the interception. I can't believe Bowden isn't giving Nick Johns a look. 2) The O-Line is well shaky. They have possibilities but they are not there yet. 3) Ball is a TROOPER. Most of his yards he gets 'on his own'. Too bad the line can't give him a bit more room STRAIGHT AHEAD. That's where he is best. I did like the way the finally started using him as a decoy and throwing to him. If he stays healthy he will at least get a look at the next level. 4) The wide receivers are simply a mish mash again. Can't separate etc, etc. I blame that on the coaching staff to an extent. Bowden hasn't been able to consistently bring in decent receivers. So there is no 'next man up' when the team loses WR's like they had last year. You can't always convert QB's to WR's or TE's. 5) Play calling, well its Ground Hog Day. I got it,I got' it..I ain't got it. Apparently that will never change. 6) Defensively, they still generally can't tackle. That has been a trademark of Amato's defenses at Akron. That will not change at this point. Unfortunately,it costs them games. 7) The front 7 gets blown off the ball consistently when teams run straight ahead. They can pursue pretty well but have a hard time filling holes between the tackles. Gilbert is too small to line up at the line. He needs to pursue. He definitely needs to work on pass coverage. 8) The CB's have actually played pretty well. Yesterday they held their own against bigger and more physical receivers. 9) Dumb penalties like the ones this team commits game after game and year after year are a coaching issue. Its never really been addressed apparently because it keeps happening. The trajectory of this team has been downward for the last 1 1/2 seasons. It is nowhere near being competitive with the best teams in the MAC(Toledo,Western,OU,NIU etc). If it can't even win a division in the MAC you have to wonder about progress or lack thereof. Remember this program won a MAC Championship in 2005. I want to see how they play at Troy. That is a better team but plays in a conference that is comparable to the MAC. Its a fair barometer. I think that if there is another sub .500 season, the AD will be looking much more closely at making a change. I have never been a fan of making a change mid season in college sports. I am in favor of making changes on the field position by position. And, I am in favor of the Head Coach making changes in coaching responsibilities in order to improve performance on the field. We will know on October 1. Have at it.1 point

Why do they have Big-12 officials officiating a MAC home game? Always bizarre to me. I can't imagine an incentive for a conference's refs to possibly give the benefit of the doubt to teams from a conference that employs them.1 point

Yeah, you're right that 2-2 was the consensus, and yeah, it was a game yesterday that I thought we had a chance to win. But it's the way we lost that gripes me. If we had played a decent game and lost by 7 or 10, but played well, then maybe my vitriol would be wrong, but it is the way we lost, with the stupid stuff, that's what galls me and makes me write the stuff I do.1 point

We have lost to a top tier Big 10 and an improved Big 12 team which I expected. Lets see what they do in the MAC before we run Bowden out of town.1 point

I had originally plan ed to vote no in the poll but Dr. Z posted some interesting stats that swayed my vote. Big deal. At the beginning if the season I thought we might be, optimistically, 2-2 at the end of out of conference play. Go look at the comparison in football budgets between Iowa State and Akron, then put on your big boy pants. We live in a world where the money spent on foitball programs matter. I have not said I don't have my concerns, I am saying that I am not ready to have, as some might say, a "hissy fit" after losing 2 games we were projected to lose, to P5 teams. The ridiculous calls to replace Woody are childish. Let's replace with him with a kid who isn't ready and manages to throw too many interceptions? Honestly, you can say your concerns are with this or that, but most of the negative co me t's are really about losing a game you wanted to win if you are honest with yourselves.1 point

Akron is not very good and will not be any good with this staff. Are we better than with the last coach? Well, yea, but that is like being the thinnest kid at fat camp. This team has reached their apex under TB. If we are happy with 5-7 with an occasional 6-6 season, then this is your guy. Of course since we are so used to losing, that looks good. But if we want to be regular contenders in the MAC, we need to move to someone else. I thought, if nothing else, that TB could recruit well at Akron. He has not. He takes a lot of risks that rarely pay off. Maybe it is time to take a chance on a lower division coach that wins even though he is a lower division. I know that is where TB came from, but he already had a track record and wasn't a young upcoming coach. I don't know the answer, but we will not win with this staff. I can deal with a lot of things with a coaching staff. But the constant lack of discipline this team shows year after year is absolutely ridiculous. After Nelson had his PF, taunting an injured player, he should have been yanked and another QB put in. Like I said earlier, I doubt TB even says much to him.1 point

I'll bite....because we got our asses kicked when we shouldn't have against a not very good program, and a lot of it was a result of us beating ourselves. But hey Keener, it looks like you're right if thats what you want to hear!1 point

Why are people waking up now? No offense to anyone, but I am curious as to why this game is tipping sentiment against Bowden.1 point

I think this is my past post in this topic....6 losses in a row doesn't exactly excite. When I posted "Women Win!" I didn't expect it to just be that one game....sorry, not trying to be negative here. Last night vs. Duquesne the WSOC looked okay, but definitely regressed. I guess a 1-0 loss to yet a second 2016 A10 Champion (??) isn't the end of the world, but there isn't a clear goal scorer on this squad. Granted 8 freshman starters meant for a long season. The MAC starts now and I think maybe I was even too optimistic thinking they'd win 4 MAC games...Hope they can turn this around, lots of great people in this program.0 points
