  3. The Zips were picked to sweep the Mens and Womens titles in indoor Track and Field, and if you want to see something kinda cool this weekend, Saturday is the Pole Vault Convention, the 6th since its inception, and of course Akron has produced a world champion, a few NCAA champions, and many National team vaulters from Germany, England and the U.S. The Elite competition is Saturday night at 7, and then on Sunday there is a full collegiate indoor meet to kick off the home season, starting at 3 pm. Too early for great performances, but lots to showcase for the season.

  5. Fernando Pina transferred to Coastal Carolina (if my memory is correct) after Jake outworked him in practice. When the list was started, zip_ME87 and I were trying to tie to the 32 number that showed up on the zip web site. Clearly, the zip web site list would not include the 3 names that have been brought up. Jesus "Chino" Perez is someone who could be playing in the USL 2 years from now but I would not consider him a zip as he transferred after his freshman year. let's not lose sight of the fact.....that 32 is an incredible number since 2016. Let's celebrate the large number of zips in the pros.....there are some on the list that were at Akron for 1 semester....and many more that left Akron with a college degree. I have been impressed by Jonathan Lewis, who was only at Akron for 1 semester but Jonathan passionately supported the zips this past year.

  6. @Illini Zip, all good questions regarding LePear... I know this topic has likely been covered at some point and it doesn't belong in this thread. But since it's slow today maybe some of you will humor me and answer my questions about Lepear Toles. He is from your general area, has anybody watched him play in person, thoughts? I think he's a steal from the clips I see. There is no way he is a 2 star prospect in my opinion. He is 6'-6" with smooth guard skills. I see him playing 1 through 3, possibly the 4. Groce has used shooting guards and small forwards to initiate the offense in the past so it's not an impossibility for him to play the point. Tony Carr at Penn State, point guard - 6'-5", is a nightmare for small guards. Also, does anyone know why Toles went the military academy and junior college route? Grades perhaps? Did he have any good offers coming out of high school? Finally, does he have 3 years of eligibility left starting next year? I would appreciate any feedback, thanks. Yes, LePear is from Canton, which is a neighboring city to the south of Akron, less than 20-minutes away. I saw LePear play, oh, maybe four times while he was in high school. I always enjoy following the local guys, so I was hoping we'd sign him coming out of high school. His game reminds me of Eric Parrish. I'd say he's not quite as athletic as Eric, but a slightly better ball handler. He was always know for his outside shot in high school, but really started blowing up when he became more aggressive driving to the hoop. He's also a pretty good passer. As you mentioned, I'd like to see him try to run the point. He was part-time PG in high school, but McKinley had another nice guard named Darryl Straughter who was only 5'8" & was also an excellent PG so LePear usually played off the ball. LePear is a versatile player. He lets the game come to him & doesn't normally force things. Sometimes in high school I wished he had forced the issue more, but he's a good team player. In the state playoffs his senior year he finally developed the attitude of "Give me the d@mn ball and get out of my way." He led McKinley to the state quarter finals before losing a close game to eventual state champion Lima Senior.

  7. On that, I will say that Ben Speas is considered UNC, not Akron, since he transferred to UNC and went from there to the pros. I do not recall the details on Pena, but I think he also transferred for his final collegiate season(s). Nothing against Ben or Fernando. In fact, Ben Speas was always and still is one of my favorites, especially being a local boy. I wish he had not transferred.

  8. Yeah but....Victor is a former Zip and Victor does play in the pros and this is not Jared's webpage nor the team's it is ours. How does it disrespect the staff if we list him as a former Zip playing in the pros? Maybe in the official Media Guide is the place to worry about that stuff, but here? We don't need to be...nor are we ever....politically correct.

  9. Kind of a low key affair this past weekend, T & F held their first Open Meet to coincide with the Annual Pole Vault Convention, but some nice results. On the women's side Dara Perry had a nice 60 dash, and it looks like having Olympian Bridget Franek on the staff is paying off in the distances, with Haley Hess winning the mile, Ashley Murray taking the 3,000 and freshman Lean Recker winning the 800. Multis talent Jackie Siefring got some workout in the individual events and won the long jump, and Olivia Snyder took the win in the shot put. Lucy Bryan is a real class vaulter and placed 3rd in the Elite group. Taron Slone took the 200 on the men's side, while Garret Crichlow won the mile, Freshman Marc Migliozzi won the 3k and Preston Fillman took home a double with wins in the 60 Hurdles and the Long Jump. NCAA finalist Curtis Richardson got the season off with a nice win in the high jump and NCAA champ Matt Ludwing won the Elite PV in a jump off against former Zip and World Champion Shawn Barber. One of the Zips Football team members OL Nick Fazio threw int he weights, but no sign of Jovann Letuli or Kwadarrius Smith...too early to get them back in if they come at all.

  11. There are several on the "official" list of Zips In The Pros that do not care about Akron Soccer the way that Victor Souto does. How many on that list have a Z tattooed on their ribs?

  12. He's still listed in the Zips Media Guide 2013, 2014, 2015. So, yes.
