Frank Solich was hired at OU when he was 60 and didn't really turn them into a consistent winning program until he was about 65. If he was 25 years younger, he'd have most likely left Ohio years ago.

Akron certainly has had issues finding and hiring quality coaches. I don't feel the issue is they have been moving onto new coaches too soon. If anything they have a track record of holding onto sub-par coaches too long. Below is a list of coaches they have had since 1987. Gerry Faust - 8 seasons (1987-1994) (36-49) Lee Owens - 9 seasons (1995-2003) (40-61) JD Brookhart - 6 seasons (2004-2009) (30-42) Rob Ianello - 2 seasons (2010-2011) (2-22) Terry Bowden - 7 seasons (2012-2018) (35-52) Tom Arth (2019-???) Everyone of these guys got 6+ years to prove themselves (besides Ianello). I know there is a contingent here that is still pro Bowden and I'm tired of beating that dead horse so I'll exclude him from this discussion. Do any of you think we needed a 9th season of Faust, a 10th season of Owens, or a 7th season of Brookhart?

Assessing Coach Arth (and his staff)

We got $1.3 million from South Carolina. -
Sure, if those kids want to drop down to FCS or division 2. Akron has holes everywhere this year. If you aren't good enough to see the field as an upper class men this year, you're probably not good enough to see the field at any FBS school next year.

Not to mention every year they give season tickets some sort of gift around November/December.

I'm operating under the assumption that all the conference games that aren't on cable with for the most part be on ESPN+. I'll be disappointed if that doesn't end up being the case.

They are for the most part public. The costs typically range between $1.2-1.5 million with the cost for future games steadily increasing year over year. Basketball and soccer generate some revenue, however, I don't think there is any denying the fact football generates the bulk of that $10 million in real revenue. https://deadspin.com/akron-and-south-carolina-will-play-the-most-meaningless-1830780166 -
Game 9: Zips @ BGSU - Nov. 2 - 2:00 p.m.

Whoever gives us the best chance of winning should be the one who starts. Back in 2016 Akron was sitting at 5-6 and needed to beat Ohio to gain bowl eligibility. We elected to start a WR at QB instead of Kato because we didn't want to burn his redshirt. Who knows maybe had Kato been our QB we could have won. Three years later and people are talking about benching Kato and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he transferred this offseason so he wouldn't even be on our roster for his 5th year. You know the year we redshirted for the purpose of keeping him for. With the way the portal is and the way new players are constantly coming in to compete for jobs, I don't see the value in red shirting unless you don't think that player can help you year 1 as you already have better players at the position. Someone might argue that this season is a lost cause because we're not going bowling. The thing is recruits are still watching these games and if we're able to build any kind of momentum instead rolling over and losing our last 4 games by 20+, that may help to land a few that are on the fence. -
The NCAA knew they couldn't fight off the state and potential federal laws that were coming. This just allows them to save some face and in their minds gives them a seat at the table with legislatures to have an influence on how this gets rolled out.

The football program bleeds money because of the football stadium. A cost that doesn't go away regardless if we drop down or eliminate football entirely. I've made more detailed posts in the past on the matter, but a quick rundown the football program costs ~$10 million to run. $4 million of that is tied to the stadium debt payments. This means the operating costs are $6 million. We get ~$1.5 million per body bag game, which we have been scheduling 2 per year so that's $3 million in revenue right there. Next we get ~$1 million for the MAC tv deal. The college football playoff distributions pays something in the neighborhood of $500k-$800k. Just between those three revenue sources we're looking at $4.5 million in revenue. This doesn't even include ticket sales, parking, concessions, advertisements, etc. -

You're dating yourself with that seat cushion. It looks like it's from the 70s. -

Any reason we don't schedule Robert Morris in the regular season? They're probably better than any team we play at home this year in OOC play outside of maybe UMass. -

Buffalo received some good news today. Buffalo AD tweeted out today that the NCAA approved Texas Tech transfer Josh Mballa waiver so he'll now be eligible this season. -
I was watching "The Boys" on Prime Video last week and noticed a reference to Akron. "Well (SIGHS) I mean, what about my crime itinerary? I think the best thing's just to, you know, get out there and put some points on the board." - The Deep "Not much crime in Sandusky. I mean, we're not a shithole like Akron." - Jeff

This poll is like voting for whose the tallest midget. Four of the six candidates don't even have winning records. Edit: I've changed my mind and am going with John Heisman (even though he's not listed as a choice) for his contribution to the game of football.

I agree with UConn, UMass, and Liberty. If a player goes to a military academy he would also have to commit to serving a few years in the army/navy/air force. For a player that has hopes of going pro that's a non starter. For others I think it would take a significant sum of money to commit to such a thing if they didn't have interest in serving in the first place. -

My guess would be Cincy, Houston, SMU, Memphis, Boise State, and maybe Rice. -

There are very few Kehres out there. Most coaches who have success at a lower division want to chase the money, prestige, challenge, etc. that a higher division provides. This leads to the best coaches trickling upwards. The MAC isn't immune to this either. Look at all the coaches MAC schools have lost to P5 schools over the years. For this reason I'd say the average FBS coach is a better recruiter, in game adjuster, better at getting the most out of his players, and game planner than your average D3 coach. -

I would have liked to see Arth keep some of the old staff, namely Mounds, but can understand why he didn't as who knows if those guys would have had some sort of resentment towards Arth. I do think it was a mistake Arth bringing in all his equally inexperienced cronies. He should have went out and gotten at least 1 experienced coordinator to be his right hand man. It probably would have helped ease his transition. -
Game 7: Buffalo @ Akron - Oct. 19th - 3:30 p.m.

And that doesn't even highlight the fact our RBs have a combined 267 yards on 108 carres (2.47 ypc). Arth and the staff are really going to need to hit JUCO or attract some immediately eligible transfers to plug gaps on both the offensive and defensive line. Gibson having to run for his life every down is going to lead to him developing some bad tendencies and stunt his growth. -
I've never argued that Arth was the right guy for the job. I'm just scratching my head here trying to think of what possible players you're referring to when you said "So many athletes that were impact players last year seem nearly silent or absent this year". If there are so many, you shouldn't have trouble naming them. Where is this untapped talent that I'm missing?
-
I'd love to hear who these "impact players" are that you're referring to. As mentioned before the entire defense is pretty much all new starters. Kato statistically is on pace to have a better season this year than last year. Our leading return back had a whopping 128 yards last season on 3.3 ypc. Our offensive line has been an issue for a number of years. The only returning receiver that really did anything for us last season that's disappointing this year is Andrew Williams. Nate Stewart, Burkhart, and Knight all already have more receiving yards through 6 games this season than they had all of last season.
-
I want whatever you're smoking. We lost something like 7-8 starters off of what was a fairly decent defense and would have still had an anemic offense with Milwee calling the plays. It's not even worth talking to you if you believe this would be a "good" (6+ win) team had we kept Bowden considering the talent we lost off of our 4-8 team. Akron could have hired Urban Meyer and we'd have still sucked this season.
-
Does anyone here really think that if we kept Bowden that this team would be good? We went 4-8 last year on a team that anyone with two eye balls could see had way more talent than this years one. One of those 4 wins came against an FCS opponent, which we didn't even play an FCS team this year. No, I'm not here to defend or make excuses for Arth. I wasn't thrilled with the hire myself. What I'm willing to say though is this team would suck regardless of who was coaching it as there is a clear lack of talent and depth on the roster. Considering Bowden offered ~75% of these guys scholarships a lot of the blame for the talent deficiency falls on him. Unless an unexpected win occurs this team is going to go 0-12. If you want to argue Bowden would have us at 3-9 that's fine, I'm not going to bother arguing with you. Either way both would be terrible seasons that I'd have no interest in watching. The Bowden blowhards around here talk so much about how the name was an asset for recruits, but every year we had a sub par MAC recruiting class. He had some early success in hitting on some transfers that helped mask some of his recruiting deficiencies, but then he quit hitting.
