  1. Exactly, but outside of Wichita State, if they were to add football and had a strong desire to compete at FBS level, I can't think of any realistic candidates that would raise MAC basketball to being a bonafide 2 bid conference.
  2. 1) App State is a running team 2) They can't keep up this level of being undisciplined. At least I hope. 3) I haven't heard enough buzz surrounding this game to make me believe it will draw that much better than the typical game. The better over/under would be 15k IMO. Win this game and then win the 2 games after and I feel a 5-1 Akron team will receive some media attention going into the home WMU game.
  3. Certainly a much better piece than anything I've seen out of the ABJ.
  4. What you view as a weakness, I view as a strength. Schools being close together means low travel costs which is valuable to financially strapped athletic programs. Flying the golf, tennis, swimming, track, soccer, etc. to Fargo each year is expensive. Not to mention the MAC is locked into its already generous TV deal until 2027. Where is this extra money going to come from so MAC schools don't have to split the same size pie more ways to feed more mouths?
  5. I heard Bowden push season tickets on every radio show or news clip he did before the season. I'm not sure what more he could have done. As for what other reason could someone be giving shout-outs to the Zips. Perhaps the guy is an alumni that is actually proud of his alma mater football team for the 1st time since the Charlie Frye days. Cleveland is kind of notorious for being bandwagon fans for any of its teams not named the Browns. There were talks of the Cavs needing to relocate before James was drafted. Now they can bring 1 million+ people downtown. The Indians sold out 455 games when they were a perennial contender. Now they are attracting 13k fans during home games even though they are a sure bet to make the postseason. Even those OSU fans get pretty silent when OSU has one of their 7-8 win seasons.
  6. Baltimore Ravens let Belichick walk, not the Cleveland Browns so I don't know how it's a comparison to begin with. He wasn't going to sit out coaching 4 years until the Browns return and he certainly had no desire to leave Pats when the Browns returned. In what made up scenario would of Cleveland been able to keep Belichick? It should be noted that record was with him coaching an expansion roster.
  7. Practice squad players make about $100K per season if they stay on the squad for the full 17 weeks
  8. He would have bolted Kent State anyways for greener pastures just like he did Toledo. The GOAT NEO coaching blunder would be Modell firing Paul Brown. Belichick wasn't a Cleveland coaching blunder as the team was already out the door.
  9. I thought I saw Bama was favored by only 43. Looks like Vegas is wanting to give people some free money this week. I say Bama by 50.
  10. 1) Appalachian State's ground and pound offense will minimize plays and possessions for both teams. I say he finishes with ~18 2) I feel the loss of Cox swings this game in the Zips favor. Had he'd played I'd of taken App State. Cox is averaging 5.7 ypc, meanwhile, his replacement is averaging 3.4. The 3rd string back that will be seeing an uptick in carries 2.6 ypc 3) I expect App State to run the ball 40 times or more as that kind of is their style of offense. Given that kind of workload the Zips will definitely concede 140 yards on the ground.
  11. I watched a good amount of Bernie on Tailgate 19 last season. I thought he was great at breaking things down and providing insight. There are certainly sound bites where you think is he drunk, but most of the time he is great.
  12. I kind of expect this game to get picked up by CBS Sports or some other cable station. The sample size is still small and there is plenty of football to be played prior to this game, but barring BG turning around their season, this looks to be the MACs highest profile week 7 match up.
  13. It's early and it is hard to keep track of exactly how many "carries" Woodson has as sacks count as rushing attempts for QBs in college, but Woodson's appears to be carrying the ball a great deal less this season. In the 11 games he started last season he had 132 (12 per game) "rush attempts". This season he is down to 4.7 "carries" per game. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the fact he has more receivers getting open so he doesn't have to do so much himself, but I imagine him having more composure in the pocket and Bowden stressing to him that he needs to keep his eyes downfield and limit his number of hits also plays some sort of factor.
  14. I see they only have 354 followers on Twitter. I'm all for anything that gets a few more fans into the stands, but realistically how many extra people will this attract? How big is their following? Edit: Also, what's the story behind Bernie taking an interest in Akron football? He's a Youngstown kid who went and played for the U. Obviously I like that he's taken an interest, but am just curious why all of a sudden?
  15. Swensons is a must. Get a Galley Boy, Potato Teezers, and a shake of your choice. You can thank me later. Edit: As for sports bars the only 3 that I'm aware of that are in North Canton are Puckers, TD Tailgate, and Winking Lizard. Of the 3 Winking Lizard would be my choice as it has the most extensive beer selection but none of them are must sees. Belden Village has a lot of food options, but it is mostly all chain food. PS. I'm not sure if you plan to visit the Hall of Fame, but it is only a 10 or so minute drive and well worth seeing. Canton would offer you a better food selection.
  16. If we want to talk about actually increasing parity, drop the scholarship number to 75-80 instead of 85. In the current state a team like OSU is able to hoard guys on their 3rd string that would be starters for most other teams. Ball last season finished behind Zeke, Miller, Samuel, and Dunn in carries and now he is the Zips featured back. Had OSU only had 77 or so scholarships to begin with they might not have offered him in the 1st place and he would have ended up at MSU or someplace similar. This would trickle other current P5 players down to MAC and other G5 schools. I'm counting 64 P5 schools x 8 scholarships = 512 players
  17. Akron certainly appears to be less dependent on transfers with this up and coming recruiting class, but I don't see it going away anytime soon. They've found a good niche in acquiring talented players that have either fallen out of favor at their current school or got buried on the depth chart. I'm guessing in the future you will see fewer JUCO transfers, but still a steady flow of guys like Natson, Macrcus, Pittman, Ball, etc.
  18. Not to put the cart in front of the horse, but if the Zips manage to squeeze this one out, their next 2 games are Kent and Miami. A 5-1 start heading into WMU would be incredible and might actually attract Joe Akron's attention.
  19. Yeah, I get what you are getting at, but feel its poor calling out a teams attendance when if you look at actual butts in the seats they average 2x-3x us.
  20. You're joking, right? I can't find the real attendance numbers for this game, but based off the TV footage I'd guess there were 20k+, maybe 30k, in attendance. Say what you will about Marshall, but they have a large and loyal fan base for being a G5 team.
  21. Captain Kangaroo thanks for all you do. I've ventured to some "bigger name" opponent forums time to time and they look like websites I visited in the late 90s early 2000s. This website really is top notch. As for everything else, Akron needs to keep growing its fan base if we want it to ever reach our potential. Pushing fans away is the last thing we need. I know that since I've became an active poster, I've watched and attended more Akron sporting events. I'm young and am still paying off debt/getting my finances in order, but I intend to one day after working my way up the corporate ladder some be a premium seat STH and give more to the University. I wouldn't be nearly as involved with Zips athletics if I didn't have you fine folks to discuss it with.
  22. If Cox can't suit it up, that should greatly increase the Zips odds of winning this game. Below is the YPC for App State's top 2 backs for each of their first 3 games. ..............................Cox...................Moore Tennessee..............4.8.....................2.4 Old Dominion..........7.4.....................3.2 Miami..................... 4.3.....................3.9 *Disclaimer: Not cheering for injury. Just an observation.
  23. Considering Bama beat USC by 46 and Kent lost to an FCS team that actually sounds low...
  24. Zips aren't good enough to overcome being undisciplined. We gave up what 2 or 3 first downs that drive off of penalties?
  25. The what I'm guessing was drunk disgruntled Zips fans getting chippy with one another during the 2nd half and at end of the game surely didn't help neither. Tensions are still high.
