  1. If you want to think logically, if you're a kid from Westerville (who has no prior connection to either school), where are you more likely to go assuming you received offers from both 1) the perennial conference championship contender who attracts 10k+ fans each game or 2) the perennial cellar dweller who draws 5k fans? The reality is the Toledo job is easier as the program is built on a solid foundation. At Akron, the coach has to work much harder to overcome the stigma and challenges.
  2. Leipold inherited a program that made it to back-to-back national championships. I wouldn't exactly say he rebuilt anything. He did certainly improve on what had a solid foundation already. I don't think there is any magical formula for guaranteeing success. Short of backing a Brinks truck up to Saban's house to tempt him to take the Akron job (sarcasm). Successful G5 coaches have come from all kinds of different backgrounds.
  3. Things like planting your feet at the 10 and letting any ball over your head go was preached by coaches even when I was in middle school. They should know basic fundamentals even before putting on an Akron jersey. Why they choose to disregard them? Who knows.
  4. Not to mention, Luke played under Moorhead and was a coach on his staff. In a situation where Moorhead voluntarily leaves, Getsy might be a candidate. I don't see him wanting to usurp one of his mentors.
  5. Which is pretty shocking considering Moorhead has coached the offensive side of the ball virtually all of his entire career.
  6. I feel the approach isn't that great and a bit tone deaf. I don't have any hard numbers, but I imagine for schools like Alabama or Ohio State, that somewhere around 80% of their NIL comes from the top 10% of donors.
  7. Movable object vs stopable force
  8. Zips going to Zip
  9. I'm actually thankful they didn't. He seemed to have found himself in a good landing spot. Allen and Mobley are both younger and play more minutes than Indy's Turner and Siakam. I just think he'll have more of an opportunity in Indy than he would in Cleveland.
  10. Not meant to get off topic but what was really infuriating about that Ianello hire was that Akron was booming at the time. Enrollment was up, new stadium, relatively new fieldhouse, Akron's athletic budget was near the top of the MAC. We then decided to cheap out on what was the most important factor to success for a college program, the coach. I'm in the camp that doesn't think we should fire Moorhead as we can't afford it. Also, who out there could you get that you confidently believe could turn Akron into a winner? I don't necessarily think Moorhead is a bad coach. He might have been a great coach for us 15 years ago when we had an adequately funded program and bright spots to sell recruits. It's much tougher to win at Akron now as the stadium has lost that new car smell, the budget has been gutted, and apathy has set in. I'm not sure Moorhead has it in him to overcome the challenges.
  11. To me it isn't as much about age as its about the fact that he has been out of the game for so long. It would be different if he was still involved in running camps or something to stay engaged. Having developed relationships helps with recruitment. Particularly when you don't have a giant war chests of NIL money to play with.
  12. To be fair, I'm sure the Tigers had a bigger recruiting budget and more NIL than Kent.
  13. I'm not upset. I've been fairly apathetic towards the football program ever since year 2 of Ianello. I think I've only attended 1 football game in the last decade despite only living 20 minutes away. Heck, I'm going to a tailgate for homecoming Saturday, but I'll skip the game. The program has just never given me much reason to invest my time or energy. Basketball is what I'm invested in regarding Zips athletics. I'm mainly just killing my time here until the basketball season starts. I'm not advocating firing Moorhead.
  14. What opponents do you think would be winnable? We look like a bottom 10 FBS program. Do you want us to schedule 4 FCS schools? Edit: It should be noted that the OSU game should have been a home game against Kentucky. Kentucky bought out that game fairly late in the scheduling process. I'm not sure what all schools would have been available to fill in the spot.
  15. This isn't a Bowden thread. One winning season in a 7 year tenure isn't going to get you statue at any school. Even at a school that has been the laughing stock of FBS for ~30 years. I'm not going to engage this discussion any further as it's irrelevant to this thread and discussing a coach that isn't even at Akron anymore is a waste of my time. Edit: Also, I'm not calling for Moorhead's job this season.
  16. This is how I remember at the time as well. He had larger offers to be an OC elsewhere, but after having a health scare, realized family was more important than money. Especially since he's still making enough to live comfortably.
  17. He had 7 or more wins in 2 out of his 7 seasons. That's not consistently winning 7+ games now is it?
  18. The problem is they spent on facilities then proceeded to shop the clearance aisle bin for Ianello and Arth. Bowden and Moorhead both seemed like hires that a program trying to win would make, but we haven't consistently tried to make promising hires.
  19. I don't think them staying in the MAC is an option per NCAA rules. Your home conference is the one that your basketball program is in. It's my understanding that you can't be an affiliated FBS member in football to another conference if your home conference sponsors FBS football
  20. MVC would be their best option for all sports. The MVC might have some interest in Toledo, but I can't imagine they would want NIU. Their best option would probably be Horizon.
  21. I shared this file a few weeks ago. It's the MAC'S most recent tax filing. It has all the information you need, including total payout for each MAC school. https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/310682486/202411369349308926/full
  22. He's the leading passer and rusher on a team that is 3-0 with 2 P4 wins. He's pretty much been a 1 man offense. He's going to draw some interest. I don't necessarily think he's going to be the top QB in the portal. I think Caleb Williams got $1 million. He's certainly not that level of good. Perhaps I was overestimating saying $200k, but it's certainly going to be much more than $12k. Time will tell on what the exact figure is.
  23. I think he'll be fine. He might even be able to come ahead of what the assistant verbally offered since he now has game tape showing he can perform at a high level against P5 competition. I wouldn't be surprised if he signs for $200k somewhere, which is certainly much more than the $12k he would have gotten had he stayed and exhausted his last remaining year of eligibility. Edit: Heck I imagine even Akron in our poverty state could come up with more than $12k to pay this kid with one call to Kaulig.
  24. If Akron found a coach that could consistently go 7-5 or 8-4, he'd probably get a statue outside of the stadium. Regardless of if he won MAC championships or not. The bar is that low at Akron.
