OU offense seems pretty good. They just don't have much of a defense. I'd guess OU ends up winning this something like 31-20

If that's true then we're very fortunate Williams is gone

Just to add onto my prior post I actually like that 2 for 1 deal we signed with Kentucky even though they turned out to be pretty good. We talk all the time about how we can't get anyone good to come to the JAR to play us in basketball, but here in football we very well could be hosting a ranked team in 2024. When is the last time Akron has hosted a ranked team? Would it Marshall back in Leftwich days or Miami during the Big Ben days?

The Tennessee game was scheduled 12 months ago when Arth was very much on the hot seat. The Zips needed the game to pay for Arth's buy out and getting Arth out sooner than later was much more important than playing a meaningless game against New Mexico. I'm very much against the scheduling Kent State does even though that has seemed to work for them under Sean Lewis as Kent is likely the favorite to win the MAC this year. I just don't think Akron's schedule was all that bad this year. MSU is sitting at 2-3 and still has games left against OSU, UM, and PSU. They will be lucky to make it to a bowl game this year as that leaves them little to no margin for error. Tennessee just happened to have their best year in some time the year we played them. Liberty we played against their 3rd string QB and very much had a chance to win. College football is very much the bigger fish eating the smaller fish. The problem is we're a bottom 5 roster in FBS so we're always going to be an underdog pretty much regardless of who we face. I expect that to change with Moorehead, but that will take some time. I see people talking about how tough next years schedule and we play Temple, Indiana, Kentucky, and Morgan State. Kentucky is certainly good, but they were pretty mediocre when we scheduled them. The other 3 schools we play are all very beatable.

Tennessee is obviously good this year, but you're way overestimating the program as a whole. The last year they finished a season ranked was 2016. They aren't remotely in the same class as an Ohio State, Clemson, or Alabama. And the last time they had sustainable success to be compared to a Wisconsin would be 1990s-2005 so like nearly 20 years ago.

We already play Toledo about every other year, which is pretty frequently, and nobody really in either fan base gets excited about it
-
How would one even regulate that? These games are scheduled 5-10 years in advance. When we scheduled Kentucky they were probably in the 50-80 range, but now they're currently a top 15 team. I presume they will be ranked next year when we start our series.

You're already seeing the P5 play fewer cupcakes. The P5 conferences have started to expand to 9 conference games instead of the traditional 8. That leaves 3 OOC games instead of the normal 4. Add in pretty much all P5 also play at least one other P5 OOC then that would leave at most only 2 cupcake OOC games. I actually don't think our OOC schedule this year was that bad. Tennessee was obviously very good. MSU wasn't nearly as good as people thought and a good G5, which we aren't, could upset them. Liberty isn't a P5 and we were in a position to win that game, but failed to execute. Take away MSU and replace them with a middle of the road Sun Belt or CUSA and I'd still say we'd still have went 1-3 OOC.

New Coach - Same crappy team (*Thread from 2004*)

Honestly, that was before my time of being a Zip. My comment was in regards to the talent (or lack there of) Moorehead inherited from Arth -

I wouldn't fret too much over game threads or things people say immediately after losses. Generally they're speaking with emotion instead of logic. Most people I've talked to believe Joe will right the ship. He inherited a roster that was bottom 5 FBS in talent. Even with the transfer portal it's going to take some time to build this roster -

Funniest thing there is one of the commenters actually thinks BG has a chance of winning the MAC East. It pains me to say this, but Kent is likely the heavy favorites to represent the division. I do think Miami can challenge them though. After those two the division is pretty terrible. -
I think LeBron is much older than you realize. He was born in 1984. The Cowboys won 3 Superbowls in the 90s.

The NCAA doesn't own the media rights. The individual conferences do so you would have to get all the conferences to agree to it.
-
The problem is there is no one network that owns the right to simulcast all FBS games. The NFL owns RedZone so when they reached a TV deal agreements with Fox/CBS they reserved the right to show live highlights. There is no centralized party to do the same for college football

Game 5: Akron ZIPS vs. BGSU - Score Prediction (POLL)
kreed5120 replied to AKSportsFan's topic in Akron Zips Football
I'm expecting a close game. I'm going to say 27-24 BG, but this is a game that we definitely can win. -
Do they not realize that college football is very much a spoils system? It most likely means they all will be fired too when a more permanent coach gets hired to replace Herm.
-
What I'm saying is if all G5 programs are getting the same bump in revenue from the expanded playoffs then its not like that gives Akron some new competitive advantage compared to the other G5 as they will be getting that same money too. The P5 will even be getting more so just furthering that gap.
-
Realistically even winning while helping doesn't solve everything. If it was Akron basketball would have had no trouble filling the JAR for the last ~15 years given that it only seats ~5500. Football is obviously bigger than basketball, but it's going to take a lot to convince people to sit outside on a Wednesday night in November when it's 30 degrees for 4 hours. If we could average a real 15k for a season then I'd say that was a success. By real I mean the university not having to buy tickets to remain FBS complient
-
I think what also isn't getting brought up is that since these games are often scheduled 5-8 years in advance it's hard to actually know how good some of these teams will be. Like sure if you schedule an Alabama, Ohio State then sure you know going in that's almost certainly going to be a top 10 team. Using Kentucky as an example, we reached an agreement with them in February 2018 so before the 2018 season even started. At the time we made the deal the last time Kentucky was ranked was in 2007 and they had some miserable seasons inbetween, including 2 years of going 2-10. They were the kind of opponent that you would think a good G5 team could upset. Fast forward to now and they're a top 10 team.
-
If all the schools are getting the same bump in revenue then really none of the programs are going to be getting a bump in revenue. That money is quickly going to get eaten up by coaching staff pay increases all across FBS and other related expenses
-
This could actually be a game if the Zips weren't in year 0 of a rebuild. Akron will look less over matched compared to their prior two games, but Liberty is far more talented still. I say the Zips lose this game 35-14
