The QFinal game against Buffalo was really like a final. The top 5 teams all could have won minus Ohio, who was struggling with fatigue, illness, and injury.
-
To be fair, beating BG isn't EVER a challenge for the Zips.

2021-2022 Zips Women's Basketball
NWAkron replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Isn't that rather cool since POY Dawson is from West Virginia? -
TOS to Ball State. Bad news for us but super news for our friends in Muncie. Of course, they are relying on an updated Wiki post: https://overthepylon.boards.net/thread/4518/whit

Saw a couple references on Twitter to Akron getting the worst draw along with St. Peters. Colgate apparently has a better chance against Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

South Dakota State is like Wofford from a few years back. All about the 3s. That makes an exciting game to watch. Eventually, Wofford's Fletcher Magee went cold and they were out in second round.

We all know that had Mogadore East won with Sincere and the 15 game win-streak the media would be all over them. Sincere has a name and an attitude that makes good copy. Our star sent an email to the coaching staff asking for a try out. If the Zip win, that will become a bigger story but for now the media sees it as quaint.

and they shouldn't. a month ago, the team was horrible. Zips will need hit lights out from 3 to have a chance. there is always an upset or two but last year Virginia was struggling coming into the tournament and played a slow, deliberate offense (high score in the 6 weeks prior was 73) like the Zips do and OU with Preston was a perfect foil much like the 2021 Zips would have been.

the seats were filled at the end of the 2020 season. COVID was a bigger culprit. Having that proven winning team will bring them back.

2010 win coming from 9th seed I believe. Wins first round at Ball State in OT 2011 comes in as 5 seed and beats Toledo and ironically loses to Ball State in the quarterfinals again in OT 2012 new double bye format. Ohio 3rd seed beat Toledo, Buffalo, and Akron (hmm sounds familiar) What the hell happened in 2011? I think I would have some memory of it.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2954082-2022-mens-ncaa-tournament-power-ranking-all-68-teams This is a pretty good assessment of the situation. They have UCLA at 13 and the Zips at 54 (the best 4 and the worst 13). Apart from writing that Ohio would have a better chance than the Zips do, they seem to get it right. Not expecting much Thursday but didn't expect much going into last Thursday either. Segu's 3 pointer a little to the right and we would be packing for Daytona Beach. Of course, a 3 pointer similar to Segu's saved Lamont Paris and his Mockingbirds. the other 13s, Vermont, South Dakota, and UTC are clustered around the Zips but higher ranked. All suffer from no quality wins.

https://www.bobcatattack.com/messageboard/topic.asp?FromPage=1&ForumPID=1&PID=331090 I've been perusing the message boards (other than PCCC @ East Mogadore) and found this gem of a Nelsonville thread. Apart from that, Toledo and Buffalo posters have some class. Ball State needs to fire Whitford before our friends in Muncie stroke out. BG's only pleasure in life is that the Zips beat Toledo. And Miami is a nasty group of haters.

Other than SDState has the better resume than Akron. Zips play at 9.50pm. SD State plays at 12:40pm

Anyone have the One Shining Moment video they played at the JAR today?

Detroit was close and we know how that worked out. Chicago was the best location and weren't Zips a #15 seed? Admittedly, Groce and the Kittens had a wonderful draw in 2012 but in 2010: NCAA Tournament Main article: 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament Georgetown's deep Big East Tournament run gave the Hoyas a 23–10 record and made the case for the team's inclusion in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Georgetown was seeded third in the Midwest Regional in the Hoyas′ first appearance in the tournament since 2008. Observers considered the Hoyas a legitimate Final Four threat, and Georgetown was the heavy favorite in its first-round game against 14th-seeded Ohio, a team that had posted a losing regular-season record in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) but had earned a tournament berth by winning the MAC Tournament championship. The day before the game, John Thompson III said that the Hoyas were playing their best basketball of the season, but behind a 32-point effort by junior guard Armon Bassett, 23 points by freshman guard D. J. Cooper, and a strong team three-point shooting performance, the Bobcats jumped out to an early lead that Georgetown was never able to close. Ohio led 48–36 at halftime and by as many as 19 points in the second half, and a second-half Georgetown offensive surge got the Hoyas no closer than seven points despite Chris Wright's team-leading 28 points, Greg Monroe's double-double (19 points and 13 rebounds), and Hollis Thompson's 16-point performance. Ohio cruised to a shocking 97–83 upset victory, the first time the Bobcats had won an NCAA Tournament game since 1983,[52] and Georgetown's season came to a sudden and unexpected end.

The location and Thursday is absolutely horrible. But the Portland crowd will be cheering for the Zips over UCLA. A nicer blurb: 58 Akron The champs of the MAC as a No. 4 seed. John Groce has been in this spot before. This is the third school he's brought to the NCAAs, joining Illinois and, before that, Ohio. In fact, in 2010, Groce led Ohio to the second round. Two years later, he had the Cinderella story of the 2012 tournament when Ohio made the Sweet 16. This year's Akron team will have a chance to steal a victory because it plays slow and gets to the foul line a lot. Name to know: Xavier Castaneda. A rock for this team.

was it 46? yikes. On Delta, for $1551 you can leave Cleveland at 7am Wednesday, switch in Minneapolis, and arrive in PDX by 6pm. If you want to stay a few days, you can then catch the red eye back Sunday morning at 12.50am and be home by 10.30

I have to remember it's the seeding and match up that is important and NOT the location. it was either Arkansas, Illinois, Providence, or UCLA. I don't know which would have been the best match up. But sucks 13th seed Lamont and the Mockingbirds get Pittsburgh.
-
As a Toledo Rocket fan so wisely put it: "RE: Keys to Beating Akron Akron is not very good, but they are very gritty. If we can keep the game at a good pace I think we win fairly easily. If they are able to slow it down and grind it could be very tough. Would like us to press, but I donʻt know about the energy level."
-
Kent had UCLA few years ago. UCLA in San Diego?
-
Are we sure the Zips won last night?
-
In Milwaukee...that will suck.
-
Pittsburgh would have been wonderful. Ugh.
-
Totally. That's like a VCU match up.
