I 100% agree. There's a school of thought that Larry W wanted to make the big moves but was always shut down so he continued to make mediocre hires: Arth and Melissa Jackson come to mind. And the Groce hire save the university a lot of $ upfront. Illinois was essentially paying him to coach here. And something has to be done big now or just give up on football and watch Infocision turn into something like those creepy abandoned amusement parks you can find on YouTube.

athletics spending is a shell game for sure. guess we wouldn't want salaries depending on the whim of a donor.

Frankly, I can't think of a reason. Larry Williams and Tom Arth successfully crushed what was left of the brand. Billy Napier made $2mill at Louisiana-Lafayette and is now going to Florida. Why come to Akron and make $600K when other non-power 5 schools pay over $1mill.

But let me reiterate for you...a MAC east championship that led to a blow out in the MAC Championship, a humiliating loss to Lane Kiffin in the Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl and then a total collapse the following year. How about we stop making excuses and only expect excellence. A MAC east championship ISN'T a MAC Championship. And with Akron that year, it was comparable to an 8th seed making it to the finals of the MAC basketball tournament only to lose by 30 to the #1 seed followed by a 25 point loss in the first round of the CBI.
