Ham you see what is happening at the "bigger" D1 schools? Iowa State was left with 16 players on their roster ! That is insane... JMU went to the playoffs, lost their head coach, and then lost their entire starting offense to the portal and graduation. Cincinnati qb just got 5 million to go be Texas Tech qb for one year. That is more than Shadeur Sanders rookie contract, I am no Shadeur Sanders fan mind you, but that is crazy... College football until controlled is going to be like MLB free agency without a salary cap. The players will get while they can get and get what they can get. If a kid doesn't think they are going to make it to the NFL better get paid now... When Finn left for Toledo, Weiner (Toledo QB Coach) told me personally that he was receiving 400k to go Baylor and that he had to do what was best for his family. He played 3 games threw 23 passes and rushed the ball 21 times. He made $133,33.33 a game! I'd say that was a pretty good investment if he doesn't make it to the NFL. The money being thrown at these players is mindboggling. It won't last forever... Something will have to give either some type of cap, some type of super conference, or something else but even the smaller P-4 schools can't compete. Backup offensive linemen at Pitt get 100k and they are the backups... A lot of these athletes are making the decision of do I want the money or do I want to play football knowing they may never get on the field and be just a back up?

Good point LZip. I never claimed to be the brightest. I assumed he decommitted before the offer from Akron came but you could be right. He had decent numbers. I'm willing to give anyone a chance. -

interesting a month ago he was committed to new hampshire ... i wonder what persuaded him to choose the zips? -
I believe the 4k is just the Division 1 athletes and does not include Division 2 and 3 athletes. The one report I saw this morning said there is an unprecedented 4,500 Division 1 players as of today with the portal closing on the 16th and an estimated 3800-4000 Division 2 and 3 combined but there is not an exact number known as of now. The report estimates that only 30% percent will improve there current status or "find a better home"...

I am curious, this POODAH fella is represented by an agent according to his twitter. What if any NIL could the Zips possibly have to offer him? Considering the current roster makes $91.00 a month I don't expect it could be very much and just about every player that could enter the portal did except Gant... -

laventure posting that he is at Texas Tech... i could see ACC, but he is definitely a baller i wish nothing but the best for that young man. What an incredible story for him that would be..: D2 California to Akron to ... Texas Tech if that happened would just be incredible... Whatever happens for him I wish him the best -
Personally, I would not. I'm petty like that. I met the kid very nice kid i wish him nothing but blessings and success but he chose the road he wanted to take and that was to chase the dollar signs. First to Bowlong Green, remember. He couldn't get out fast enough, no fault to him... i just would not take him make nor do i think there is any way he would want to come back after being at purdue. sometimes you have to live by your decisions. Had he stayed he may have gotten more money and more experience and went somewhere to play consequences to your decisions. not all about chasing the fast cash

Marcus Moore Jr hit the portal again. I guess his two assisted tackles wasn't worth the money he got at Purdue... Probably didn't see himself climbing the depth chart anytime soon... My guess is he will end up back in the MAC...

Hey Cat, you forgot Omari Bivens for D line; he will be redshirt freshman... -
I for one would be thrilled if the Zips are in a bowl game next year, regardless of where or who the competition is I will be excited....

Tracking Roster Movement going into 2026
ZippyDoo replied to catdaddyp's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Just looking at Cat's list above there's 18 from defense alone that either graduate or have already hit the portal, six on the line out of twenty (thats interior and edges combined) I'm sure Bruno is next. No way Bruno stays. Akron cannot have the money to pay him to stay and he has worked to hard to pass up the money. With Laventure, Madden, and K. Murphy leaving, Zips are losing three of the four interior linemen with any experience. Hull obviously has the most and hopefully they give Mixon the chance to cut loose. Because of the lack of concern to get depth on the line next year Durham and Hull are the only ones returning with experience. Mixon will be returning with 170 snaps, he and Hull are the only two with snaps at all. Dall and Durham played a combined total of 1327 snaps, the twins played combined 292... Cj Murphy is gone, Kam Cheatom is gone, Brown played 14 snaps and Duncan played 8 that is our returning defensive line. Hopefully the freshmen get the chance in spring to show what they can do. There is a lot of size and potential there. Demery-Brown is bigger than any interior lineman on the team last year or this year and Kavals is the same size as Dall. They have some big shoes to fill but hopefully they can do it and Watkins is the same size as Cheatom. Linebackers, James, Boswell, and Reeves might be ready to go... I hope Tibs stays and works with them.. -

vega and musika are gone, like gone gone and eli reed is hitting the portal -
I am sure many of you are much smarter than I am and i openly admit it. This is a pretty good article it is long but to me interesting and I think some of you may find it interesting. Walgren suggested the football team cut three players for poor academics and they didn't and then a fourth who had a gpa of .74 and they did not. It goes into depth for the reasoning and i'm not pointing fingers in agreement or disagreement just saying the article is well written and explains a lot. It also says at the end the ban "could continue into next year" but that is just a possibility. I am relying some of you brainiacs to translate a lot of this for me. I do think Mr Brown did a good job though.

guess he was too worried about playing for a retired nfl player like eddie george if he chose joe moe of BG???? -
If anyone is interested.... I really thought Dall, Gant, and Laventure should have been higher... and I'm surprised Dewalt didn't get mentioned (PFF had Dewalt and Reed has the second and third rated CB's in the MAC) they didn't get mentioned at all. Laventure is the second rated interior lineman in the MAC, Summers the 7th rated linebacker, and Dall the 9th rated Edge rusher AHEAD of Voorhies. White from UMASS is the seventh rated edge rusher in the ENTIRE country and somehow gets second team MAC, make that make sense???) If history repeats itself these freshmen won't see the field this year, they will develop and possibly see the field next year or the next similar to what Dall did. At some point a program is going to have to develop from within. A program is going to have to develop and bring in players from the portal as well... They only brought in seven players, there are still plenty of roster spots -

If anyone is interested, Semaj Beals, the QB that commited is playing Friday night at 7 pm in the PA 5A state championshiop: Friday, 7 p.m. at Cumberland Valley HS (TV: PCN Audio Stream: PIAA Radio Network) PA classifies differently than Ohio I think. It goes 1A smallest to 6A the biggest. The article I read talks about Beals' High School and it brings back a lot of starters: "Chief among them is Beals, who is back under center for the Cahillites. The 6-1, 190-pound senior has thrown for 2,581 yards and 36 touchdowns this season, completing just under 65% of his pass attempts. " His top targets are seniors Ash Roberts (49-752, 10 TDs) and Eyan Stead (45-579, 10 TDs) and junior Eisa Nealy (32-479, 6 TDs). Stead and Nealy both saw action in last year's title game. Roman does most of its damage with Beals throwing the ball; the rush attack averages just over 100 yards per game, with sophomore Tre Montgomery (106-548, 2 TDs) leading the way. -

i would guess building for the future... hoping that it pays off in a year or two.. 20+ freshman is crazy though. I saw that Akron actually signed more freshman than Penn State probably will never say those words again. I hope it pans out for the Zips. Now all they can do is every year just hope to patch holes with the transfer portal same as every other team but with way less to offer. Todays freshman that go into the major college programs and start are true studs... Maryland started two edge rushers and their qb that were all true freshman and I think I saw they played a total of seven as regulars watch out for them in two years. This year, Zips played McManus and I think that is it. He definitely held his own. I bet he is a stud next season. I know Boswell started but he was a prep player before, Davis got a few snaps at safety and Sivon got a few snaps at wr but thats it. Hopefully the freshman learned and are ready to contribute next year for us. -
