  1. Ditto on that dog - you always put it right to the point now and back in the day.
  2. The proof of the lack of Division I quality of the Owens coaching staff begins and ends in the fact that only Dick Flynn is involved in Division I football today. All other coaches are either out of the profession, in D-2, D-3, NAIA or in a non-coaching capacity. How Dick Flynn, one of the greatest Defensive Coordinators in MAC history would be relegated to a position coach slot under Joe Tracey for two years is ludicrous. Owens could not build a Division I staff, which is why he could not build a Division I program. That is what you get when you hire a guy with two years of college coaching expereince to be your head coach. Guess that is why Mike Bobinski could not go to a football-playing school when he left Akron U and is now out of college athletics entirely.Because he had such a limited amount of experience in recruiting he focused on recruiting in NE Ohio instead of a regional basis. There are a lot of gret players in NE Ohio, but many of them are going to the Big 10 and other MAC schools. Owens settled on taking kids just because they were local, and Akron could not compete. The fact that Akron would ever compete with Mount Union or Wooster for a player should tell you something about the quality being sought after. For every Frye, Rohr, and Hendry there were 10 players who should never have been contacted by a division one school wearing a Akron uniform. The area high school coaches could count on Akron taking their second tier players, which made them feel good. Now the HS coaches are upset because no one is taking their Big 10 leftovers. Even Can't isn't taking these players any more, which should really tell you something.
  3. Owens only went 4-17 in his last 5 years on the road.Brookhart is 6-6 in his first two years on the road.Enough said. One can coach, the other can claim he did things that he didn't in order to save face.
  4. "We bash Owens over blowing games against Can't State and UConn, but JD in his career blew a game against a sorry MTSU team in '04, and this past year we lost to freakin BALL STATE and were SHUT OUT by Army. Let's be honest here."MTSU in year one, game two was not a blown game.Ball State was a blown game and so was Army.If you want a real juicy stat why don't you chew on the number than in two years at Akron JD Brookhart is 6-6 in road games. Lee Owens went 7-18 on the road over his last 4 years as Zip head coach. Take out the 4 road wins over Can't and Buffalo and Owens was 3-18, .016.Owens only went 5-5 in his last year against division one opponents and got to add a 1-AA game after bitching out of the game at Hawaii that was supposed to open the 2003 season. Owens used the Hawaii game for 4 years as a recruiting tool, including in February 2003 when he recruited Jacob Leota from Honolulu to come to Akron on the basis that he be able to play his first game in Aloha Stadium. Trouble is, Lying Lee had already set the wheels in motion to drop the UH game because he felt his schedule was too tough. Add Liberty and you get one heck of a drop off in competition. Why bash Owens? Because he sucked for Akron, should have been fired years before he eventually got the bus ticket for Division II, and uses his media buddies like Todd Porter and Roger Brown to crap on Akron all the time. Owens was more than 20 games under .500 after 9 seasons at Akron and always found someone other than himself to blame.
  5. Yeah, Akron should go back to taking players from local high schools that no other division one program wants just so we can brag about having players from NE Ohio.BS.Akron should recruit players from Western PA, Texas, Florida, and wherever they can get the best players. Having a recruiting philosophy that he needed to take lots of Akron-area players is one of the main reasons why Owens was canned - his players were not as good as the other MAC schools.
  6. "I still find it amazing that Dambrot doesnt have the "confidence" maybe to put in either Zach, Nick G., or Chad to help these guys out for a few minutes. What I have seen of these players they certainly won't hurt the team, and could help to rest some of the players.'R U kidding me. These guys are practice bodies at best in a division one setting. How can you jump on KD for not playing these stiffs when his team is 9-3 and 3-0 in the MAC with two road wins. Are you Nick's mom?Goddard plays no defense, Zach is a transfer from a Division II school and I am not even sure who this Zach is.You need a beer.
  7. MAC East Co-Champions is a term used by the former coach to minimize his teams' failure to win a big game in 2000. MAC East Champions, a term used to describe the team participating in the MAC Championship Game, can be used in association with the 2005 Zips. WPIAL = Akron Obsessed = CocCan't Statecker
  8. Way. #72 is a fat oaf who is always out of breath. This is the worst OL that Akron has had in some time, which is saying plenty about the abilities of those playing. I would not be surprised if all of the redshirting Freshmen are playing as starters next year in at least 4 of the 5 spots.
  9. do you really think the lites in the jar would come back on if they turned them off for intros. u r obviously a new fan as this was done back when boz n ball were hooping and it was a disaster. I was at the hoop premiere the other night and it was ok. the mens team looked pretty ragged and the womens team did too. I got my free dog pop and corn saw the vb tm beat Can't and heard from the coaches. also saw the big lights out front and the new banners outside the jar which were pretty sharp.
  10. BG will not lose twice so MIAMI is pretty much out of the MAC title hunt. Toledo, Miami and Akron may push the BG but at home the Falcons are close to unbeatable. Akron vs. Miami looks like a good game, edge to the Redskins at home. If Akron steals one there the game at BG on the 29th could be a big one - the second straight year that Akron plays for the East title - or at least a shot at it. With games against Ball State, Ohio and Can't State still to come it is not really as big as Miami in 2004. It looks like a two Bowl season for the MAC, Toledo and BG. NIU may squeak in because they have a bowl reputation and have a fan following. Akron would likely have to win out the rest of their games and go 9-2 (10-2/9-3) for a bowl invite. Just making the MAC title game does not insure a bowl bid -the bowls have the option of taking a team with a better fan draw according to what the MAC Commish said last year on radio here in Cleveland.
  11. ESPN does not do the NHL any longer
  12. 10-20 extra people to the Rubber Bowl to see two, nobody actors and a fat former football player from the 80's?
  13. Why do you need a reason to go to the game? How about the Zips are playing. The most glaring problem with Zip fans is that they want someone to beg them to do something instead of just showing up because the tema takes the field. That's the difference between fans at other schools and Akron.
  14. I wish they would bring back the pregame fireworks. The more noise the better, cannons, people cheering, who cares - noise is football. If the cannon bothers your little girl you could let her know after every touchdown to exepct a boom. That is your fallback as a parent.
  15. Cincinnati sucks. They only beat West Carolina 7-3.
  16. This preseason banquet on Sept. 27 sounds like fun. I called and got my two tickets earlier today. Can't figure out the draw of the cavs coach though.... would have been better to have a cavs player who is from Akron. Anyone else going?
  17. Bad information all the way around. Cloud flunked out Marshall is still going to Akron. Cruz turned down North Carolina, not NC State. Will be on campus in January and will take online courses at Akron U. Penny and Shargots were non-qualifiers. You guys should talk to coaches or others before posting outright crap, causing rumors and such.
  18. The Coach TV theme - how gay. Also - other ideas on here are gay too.
  19. That means that Schepp will have to step up. Do not be surprised if two-three FIRST YEAR offensive linemen play and end up starting a majority of the games this season. Missing 6-8 weeks for an OL with little experience will have him behind the 8-ball physically and mentally. The OL is the key to the season, running and passing starts in the trenches.
  20. College signings: Alliance seniors select colleges Wednesday, August 10, 2005 By JOSH WEIR Repository sports writer ALLIANCE — Troy Pascley and Marcus Proctor now can relax and just play football. The two Alliance High School seniors verbally committed to colleges recently, with Pascley committing to the University of Louisville and Proctor to the University of Akron, according to Alliance coach Ron Kuceyeski. Pascley, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound receiver, who will play for the Aviators after transferring from Marlington, gave Louisville and Head Coach Bobby Petrino his word two weeks ago. “The main reason he chose Louisville was he’s a receiver and they average 50 points a game,†said Kuceyeski. There are plenty of balls to go around in Petrino’s offense. The Cardinals averaged almost 30 pass attempts a game while going 11-1 and winning Conference USA in 2004. Louisville moves to the Big East this season. Pascley also had offers from Michigan State, Cincinnati and Pitt, as well as MAC schools. He caught 23 passes for 406 yards and three touchdowns for the Dukes last year. Kuceyeski said Pascley runs a sub 4.4 40-yard dash and can bench press 300 pounds. “He committed early so there wouldn’t be pressure on him or us to showcase his talents this upcoming season,†said Kuceyeski, whose team will play in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference this season. Proctor, a defensive tackle who committed Friday to Coach J.D. Brookhart and the Zips, led Alliance in tackles for loss (19) last year while totaling seven sacks. Even more impressive than those number are his “freakish†physical abilities, said Kuceyeski. The 6-3, 285-pound Proctor benches more than 400 pounds and runs a 4.71 40. “Their coaching staff was impressed with him,†said Kuceyeski. “He thinks it’s a program on the rise.†Players can sign national letters of intent Feb. 1, 2006. The signing period runs through April 1. You can reach Repository writer Josh Weir at (330) 580-8426 or e-mail:
  21. Elie will be lucky to start a game this season as he is still geting ovver a hand injury that had him out of all of spring ball.
  22. FYI... 1350 AM is a 5KW station, 24/7. 640 AM is a 10KW station during the day, but 1KW at night. Akron U used to be on 640AM years ago, but wanted to get a more consistent signal and moved to 1350AM. Can't State's football games are on 640AM, but their basketball games are on 100.1 FM. They jump stations from season to season. Akron football games are also on WERE-AM in Cleveland and WNPQ-FM in Canton/Tuscawaras County. Basketball games are only on 1350-AM. I am told this is due to cost. Both men's and women's games are on 1350-AM.
  23. You cannot hear 640 at night outside of Stark County. AM Radio Stations drop power at sunset, making 640 a bad station for night games. Most football and basketball games are at night. Radio Stations do not pay colleges to broadcast games. Not at the MAC level anyway. If Akron U was going to spend big dollars on radio they would get rid of the bozos doing the games. French and Dunn are embarrassing.
  24. Any game played at the end of a season with no open dates is a toss-up. MTSU and CMU games are vital for Zip confidence. Losses at one or both of these games could spell doom for a young team. Last year was salvaged by leadership from 44, 5, and 6. Not too many proven leaders on this year's roster. This is a rebuilding year.
  25. Must be high on some pain killers if he thinks he will be 100% after 5 months of rehab - he'll be lucky to be 50% BY FEBRUARY. Dials is out for the year dude, bank on it. Joyce and Middleton need to nut up and run the show of the Zips. The key to the season lay on the performances of Conyers and Peterson who need to score and rebound. Wood needs to be ready to go and fit into the team concept. Boards are more important than points.
