The last two seasons have been an improvement over the Hipsher and Crawford years, but what has really been accomplished.Dambrot is not your typical second year coach because he was the lead recruiter for the previous three years under Hipsher.Akron Basketball has no consistent strategy except to launch the three and hope that the other team is cold. If the team is not making the long ball the team loses.The Zips have no inside game and no go to player who can take over a game. Peterson is the only guy on the roster who has firepower and it seems like he has been in the doghouse for the last two years. The only reason I can figure is that he takes shots away from Golden Boys Travis and Joyce. There have been no recruits for the past two years that are potential All MAC performers.I think Dambrot needs to look himself in the mirror and make some changes on his staff to bring in some other coaching talent to help boost this team and get them over the hump.

I would say that RT and DJ are more likely to become WHINERS than WINNERS. Without their Cavs buddy they have done nothing except beat bad teams. Fact is the Fighting Irish alums just blew a 12 point lead against a bad Toledo team and could not pull it together. I could give a damn about what they did in f'ing high school and if I have to sit through another game listing to Akron fans talking about the St. Vincent glory days I may just puke.What have you done in college? Not a damn thing except finish in second for two years straight, go 2-4 against Can't State and choke away the chance to play Can't State for a third time in front of a sold out arena in Cleveland. That is why people do not believe in the basketball team because everytime they get close they choke.Thank God for Brookhart and the football team because when they got close they took advantage of the chance and made something happen.Maybe JD can coach basketball too? You are right on. Some defense would have helped, which is another reason why Peterson should have been on the floor and not Dials. At least Peterson has two good wheels to move, unlike Dials. My biggest problem with this team and this staff is that they seem to have no strategy and just flail away from three point land with no ability to go inside. Futch and Travis go big against little guys but if you challenge them at all physically they puss out. They are so mentally weak it is pathetic.I hope Bardo and McKnight bring some killer instinct to the team next year because this bunch plays like pussies in crunch time.Moreover I think this staff coaches like pussies. Dambrot needs to find an assistant who knows how to coach big men. By the looks of them none of the staff ever played the post, they are all 6-2 or less. Go get a coach with size and experience who can bring something different to the table for the big guys. Coaching jobs like last night are why Akron will never be big time on the court. Dambrot can't win big games without King James running the show. He was a loser at CMU and is not going to get the job done at Akron until he gets some athletic players who can take it to the hole. Travis cannot make his own shot - look at his line from last night. Joyce can make threes but is a non factor on dribble penetration. Middleton is 10 times the player Joyce is because he can take it to the hole.Dials is a hustler but he is a below par shooter and plays no defense. Maybe he is just tired and still feeling the effects of his injury but if that is the caqse then take his hurt ass out of the game.Milam? Coaching lost the Toledo game, not the players.Peterson had the hot hand, but got the hook in favor of the "Coaches" players. Dambrot cannot say he wasn't playing because of defense because Dials was stinking up the joint not getting back on defense and falling asleep on the court. Your seniors should be on the floor down the stretch not an injured sophmore who could not buy a basket and was playing bad defense.Where was the leadership from the bench, or from the floor, when the Zips needed to get the ball in bounds after Toledo took their first lead of the game?Let's face it, Akron got fat this season on a weak MAC and when it came time to go balls out and win some big games down the stretch the only place they could do it was at home, which is where they are for tonight's final.The great home record over the last two years is a great accomplishment but with no major wins on the road it is hollow. ONE win on the road over Can't State, Buffalo, Miami, or Ohio this season and the Zips win the MAC East outright. Last year all the Zips had to do was win the season finale at Buffalo, or win at Can't or Miami and they would have won the MAC East.The failure to have his team prepared for road games is a telling sign for this coaching staff and their inability to get the team over the hump. Playing favorites at this time in the year is pathetic and is another reason why Akron has been an also-ran for the past two years.

You guys are some negative thinkers.Why would I think that Akron would not sweep it's home games against Buffalo, WMU, BG, Ohio and Can't - that is a total of five wins.Why would I think that Akron would not win at EMU, Miami, and Buffalo? That is another three wins.Akron's bracket buster is TBA, but why would you bet against your own team.Quit thinking like damned losers all of the time and give the boys the credit they deserve. They have lost one MAC game, 17-1 is not out of the question.

Recruiting is not the problem, injuries to Akron's best player and a transcript issue with the best freshman recruit have Akron at a big disadvantage in the paint. Coach D said this on the radio following the game last night and it was the gospel. Having Wood and Conyerz in the paint would have made that game a 10 point Akron win.

Can't State? They suck. The question is what are the putting in the water that makes the football team so totally shitty for the last 20 years?

Akron is ranked #65 on the Rivals Recruiting web site - #1 in the MAC again.Lost WR commit to Ohio was not a loss. Zips have other highly rated receivers on the line who scared this kid off. Had to go to his plan b which was the farm school in Athens.

Eric was DA BOMB back in the day. Hope they give out the little clickers when he is introduced.

If you really want to get picky the 2003 team only won 5 games against 1-A teams. Cal Poly and Howard cannot be counted as these were not 1-A teams. Also, Lee Owens teams lost to 1-AA teams in 2000 (UConn) and 1995 (YSU). Owens had only one winning season against 1-A competition, which was in 1999 when the Zips went 7-4. I know because I was a senior on that team (96-97-98-99) and believe me we took over the squad and won in spite of some of the lame calls that were being made. Big George and my boys got things done, especially at Navy. Once the Class of 2000 left it was downhill all the way because no one could stand the lack of discipline on the teams. Owens all time record against 1-AA teams was 3-2. He belongs at d2 and was never mentally equipped to be a 1-A coach.

You'll have to imagine because Docking is not in the class of the guys that are listed above. Akron is one of the top teams in the nation and needs a national rep and a solid recruiter. Docking has not recruited in the Midwest.

Why would Akron want to hire a guy, alum or not, who has not recent ties to the midwest. Looks to me like they have gone in search of a national reputation guy, not limiting themselves to someone who was at the U back 20+ years ago. I say get the best coach and by the looks of the field Docking was not even close.

Actually, three former Akron coaches are on the current OSU staff, but only two are actual coaches, neither of which were on Owens' final staff at Akron. Luke Fickell left Akron after 2001 to join the OSU staff, his alma mater. John Patterson left Akron for Miami after 1999. Gregg Gillum is not a coach, he is an off-the-field staffer - he was on the fired staff in 2003.Bobby Williams is at Indiana, left with Patterson for Miami after 1999.No other former Owens assistants from the 9 years at Akron are 1-A assistants other than Flynn at EMU.SAD GROUP.
