I wouldn't even consider him. And it has more to do with my feelings I have about what he did and said during the time he was here. InTheZone...I don't dispute that you see some positives in the fact that he's done some good at a school that used to be bad. I get that. But, I was merely disputing the fact that you put him in a "took a bad program and made them a winner right away" category. I'll take your word for it that he's made them better than they were. But, I don't see a guy with an awful record at a DII school even remotely being considered for any higher level job, and certainly not a D-1A job. Is ITZ Paul winters No I'm not, but a disclaimer, as most already know, Paul Winters was my coach when I played, and is a close friend now. I think he would do an incredible job if he came back, certainly better than the stooge we have running the show now, but if I were AD, he wouldn't be my first choice, which is why I put him at 3

I'll continue to go and to pay, otherwise I'll lose my right to come in here and bitch about how pathetic we are and call for everyone's head. Things will get better, and this is how I know it. Over the past couple of years, those who support this program have started to DEMAND GREATNESS. Finally. In years past we would lose and everyone with interest in the program would just say, "Well that sucks, but hey, we're Akron." There's a different level of expectation now from the fans and that is shown on this board. If we scream loud enough, heads will roll as they need to. If we make it known the kind of people who need to be running the athletic department and the football program, Proenza will have no choice but to listen. I donate a good chunk of change to the University, and there are many others like me. I am currently penning my first ever "booster bully" letter to the Office of the President.

You might want to check your facts on Winters. He has only had 2 winning seasons in 6 years at a DII school, and only won a TOTAL of 4 games in his first two seasons, and has a dismal overall record. I think you have to have a proper context of just how bad of shape the Wayne State program was in when he got there to understand the job he's done there. That being said, I do think D2 playoff success is a must before he would come back here, which would likely happen this year. He's got a good squad, won 63-14 yesterday. He's 3rd on my list, and gets points for being an Akron native, a football alumni, and a guy who I know bleeds Blue and Gold and would put his heart and soul into this job, not look at it as just a stepping stone. I really like Danny Rocco though. Look him up on wikipedia. He is EXACTLY the kind of coach we should've been looking for the first time around. Terry Bowden would bring instant name recognition and excitement to the program, and he has a history of immediate success as a head coach. He took an awful Auburn team and went undefeated his first year in the SEC! All these guys were available this offseason, and we went out and hired a WR coach who has been nothing but a loser his whole career.
-
My top 3: 1. Terry Bowden, Head Coach, North Alabama 2. Danny Rocco, Head Coach, Liberty 3. Paul Winters, Head Coach, Wayne State Now what do all 3 of these men have in common? They're all current head coaches, and they all have extensive experience at taking programs that absolutely suck and are at the bottom of the food chain and turning them into winners right away. That's the main quality our AD should've been looking for this past offseason, instead of going out and finding one of his former butt buddies with no head coach experience and a history of being a complete loser.

I completely agree. Let them drive to the Rubber Bowl everyday after class and lifting, dress in that smelly shithole, and then hike a mile down the road to the practice fields where you spend half of practice looking at your feet trying to make sure you don't step in a hole and break your ankle. These guys practice in cushy facilities, pretend to lift in an perfectly air conditioned, clean and shiny weightroom, and make sure they cash their scholarship checks before they head out to the field on Saturday to not give a shit and embarrass their school and alumni.
-
Rodriguez didn't lose to Appalachian State. Lloyd Carr did. The Lloyd Carr with about 5 Big Ten titles and a National Championship. And guess what. They fired his ass for that bullshit. We should follow suit.
-
I hope they're prepared to hear a lot of students talking about what a joke they are on campus this week. And they deserve every word of it. I'm not convinced by what I've seen in these first two games that this team even cares if they win or not. There's always a few guys on every team that are just in it to cash their scholarship checks. I think that's the majority on this team.
-
While I think Rob Ianello is a terrible coach and was a terrible hire, and you can look throughout this board from January on to see that my position has always been consistent, I think GP1 makes a good point in that this has got to fall on the players too. I mean they just gave up 38 points to a 1-AA school. Yes our coaches are incompetent, but good Lord, that wasn't even a good 1-AA team!!! My senior year we played two 1-AA teams, and honest to God, I don't think it would've mattered if the coaches had gone up to the Varsity A room and kicked back for beers and belly laughs during that game, we still would've wiped the floor with them freestyling it and doing whatever the hell we felt like. The talent level was that different. Those guys today stepped onto the field against a highly inferior team, and bent over and took it right up the ass from them. Gardner-Webb had more heart and a bigger sack swingin between their legs. If I was on this defense, I'd be checking my manhood in the mirror tonight.

Games over, Liberty defeats Ball St. -
That's simply not true. Brookhart left the team with as much talent as we've had in the past decade. We're not in horrible shape, at least we weren't until the Rob Ianello tornado of incompetance came spinning its way into town. This team has the talent to play for a conference championship, but with this career loser position coach running things, we'll be lucky to win a conference game.
-
You're right, they fire coaches that have been there for over a decade and won multiple conference championships and a national championship when shit like this happens. It's a lot easier to fire the slapdick who has been here f-ing things up for a couple months in my opinion.
-
Liberty is up on Ball State late in the 3rd. If it's not enough that we have become a joke as a football program, our conference appears to have sunk to the level of mid-major FCS.
-
Honestly, regardess of what we do with RI at this point, TW has got to go. Everything in our athletic department right now reeks of incompetance and mediocrity, and he really shit the bed with the RI hiring. We need a man running this ship that demands excellence the way Mike Thomas did, not some jackoff who goes and hugs his coach and laughs it up after we just suffered the most humiliating defeat in school history. In other news, Paul Winters won 62-14 today. You want to talk about a man who loves this school and bleeds blue and gold..... But hey, Rob Ianello can recruit.
-
Yeah, you're right, I know nothing about the inner workings of a D1 football program, I only played here for five years.... Today was an embarrassment to this University that will be felt for a very long time. I played on some teams that weren't world beaters, but we did take care of the Howard's and Cal Poly's of the universe. This is a new low for the school and it's sad to watch being that there's no longer any excuses.
-
We're going to go 0-12 this year. Ianello needs to be fired NOW. He should've never been hired in the first place, and many on this board including myself saw this bullshit coming. Tom Wistrill has been nothing but a complete F-UP as AD and he needs to go too. Our program is officially in the shitter gentlemen, and that's a real shame considering all the money that's been poured into it. Incompetance reigns supreme. Let's hire a sorry coach from a losing program because he can recruit.... great. This is what you get when you hire losers to take over losing programs. I have never been so embarrassed to be a football alumni in my life.
-
I practiced with both of them everyday, and just trust me when I say Nick Sparks was not on the same level as Charlie Frye. Sparks was very physically gifted but the guy didn't have it upstairs to be playing QB. He played out his career at the right position. But seriously, enough with the generational comparisons here. Back to Zip Football 2010. Nicely needs to get in the film room and get better. His accuracy is always going to be an issue. He doesn't have great recievers. But if he knows opposing schemes like the back of his hand going into games, he'll take us where we want to go. 70% of being a good QB is knowing where to go with the ball and going there with precise timing. Nicely looked lost Saturday. He not only was off on his throws, but he was throwing to the wrong places at the wrong times. 10% may be his receivers. 10% of that may be his accuracy. 10% of that can maybe be blamed on the coaching. 70% of it however can likely be blamed on the fact that PN didn't do his homework.
-
I've never said Frye sucks. He just isn't a winner. Facts are facts. And like I said before, you can't really blame a QB who's throwing for 300 yards a game and losing. We had some of the worst defenses in the history of college football. Facts are facts. And Frye still managed to win more games in his 4 years than any other 4 year span in our D1 history. The bottom line is, Nicely has more talent on this team than Frye ever thought about. If he's half as good as Cap claims he is, he should double Frye's victory total. I know if we'd had the defense in those days that the team does now, we'd have won a lot more games. 3 more in my senior year alone.
-
Frye also threw for 336 in his sophomore year against Virginia. Who's taking wagers that Nicely will throw for 300+ on either of our remaining 2 BCS opponents? You want in on that action Cap? I know GP doesn't.
-
Since you asked - "Yes." In fact, wasn't it JD Brookhart's 1st season? Box Score I believe the immortal Charlie Frye threw for all of 78 yards (w/ a44% completion percentage), and a gaudy -38 yards on the ground? And with a hell of a lot better receivers than Nicely had on Saturday night, and with a veteran offensive line. The Frye & Nicely UVA/Syracuse games are eerily similar, in both circumstance and results: BCS game...first season under a new coach and system...beatdown It looks like Nicely actually performed better, since he threw the ball away (-4 rushing yards) instead of eating it like Charlie (-38 rushing yards). Oh, and Nicely - True Soph. Frye - 5th year Senior. They say "The only thing new is the history you don't know." You are all welcome for the hyperbole-free perspective, and the history lesson. People see what they want to see. I tend to see what actually happened. The book on Nicely is far from it's completion. This week he should throw for 300+ yards, and everyone will marvel at his arm strength, and his growth from game #1 to game #2. Then we'll lose at K.entucky, and everyone will clamor to see the hobbled, banjo-armed Matt Rodgers save the season. Which ain't gonna happen. Stick with Nicely, and you shall be rewarded. You want to compare 2004 Virginia, one of the BEST DEFENSES IN THE NATION, led by Ahmad Brooks and Chris Canty, to Syracuse???? There were about 8 draft picks on that Virginia defense. The Syracuse team we played yesterday would be lucky to have one!!! Apples to oranges Cap, you know better!! Here's a better comparison. Charlie Frye's sophomore year season opener. On the road. Against a GOOD Iowa team. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/scores102/1...WA------0nr.htm 21-29 for 230 yards. If Patrick Nicely had done that Saturday, I would like where we're going. Instead he laid an egg against a team that's a lot more akin to upper level MAC than a good BCS team.
-
19 D-1A wins in four seasons. Enough said.... Sadly, that's more wins than any other 4 year period in our 1-A history, and that was with some of the worst defenses in the country. Are we really to say it's the QB's fault when he throws for 350+ and we still lose? That happened multiple times in the Frye era. There's not many on this board who would say Frye isn't the best QB in our history, and I know there's nobody on this board who wouldn't love to have him under center now. But let's not make this another GP1 vs. Zipsnation Frye debate. Let's stick to the topic at hand. Regardless of whether Frye sucked, Nicely certainly does. And with our offensive line playing like a bunch sixth grade ballerinas, I don't see much hope for establishing a running game to build our offense around. Pretty grim prospects for '10 if you ask me. The only comfort I take is that the rest of the MAC sucks as bad as we do, so if RI has any coaching ability whatsoever, we should be able to swing 6 wins.
-
And GP, the day Nicely throws for 3600 yards in a season, or the day a BCS coach says that Nicely is the best QB his team will see all season, then we'll start some comparisons. Until then, your comments look slightly foolish. Was a Charlie Frye led offense ever kept out of the endzone for entire game??
-
No offense Cap, but your defenses of Nicely are starting to be slightly absurd. Granted, it was his first game in a new system and he should be given more time, but from what I've seen so far, the kid is awful. He may be the best we have, but he's still awful.
-
C'mon Zips fans, how many games have you guys been to? Nobody buys tickets presale for Akron football games, because everyone knows they don't sell out, so there's no sense in making two trips to campus, one to buy and one to come to the game. The ticket windows before the games are always packed because that's when people buy their tickets. 7k presale is way above average, believe it or not. Night game, new coach, recognizable opponent... I'll say 20k.

ITZ....Did you graduate from the GP1 School of Spelling? Wow... I normally take pride in my spelling and grammar. That would be HORSE.... H-O-R-S-E. I apologize to all of Zipsnation.org for that eye sore of spelling I subjected you all to. It won't happen again.
