  1. I tend to agree. However, I would like to come to the defense of Jones Jr High. I'm sure that every once in a while, the administrator at JJH makes a good decision. I'm still waiting for a good decision by TW. I still have not forgotten the Reno disaster that basically ruined the career of a good guy. If Karma does exist, TW will get fired and never come close to having a good job again. A friend told me that Reno is putting his West Point Engineering degree to use, and is working in Louisiana/Alabama area (subcontracted by BP to work with them on the oil spill clean up). He's doing well. I'm sure you know Cap'n, but for the ZNers who don't know, Reno was actually very successful outside of football before he came to the Zips. He was returning from a business conference at a resort on the beach when he happened to sit next to a recently hired JD Brookhart on a plane. They began talking and Reno told him how much he missed football. JD extended him an invitation to become a GA. Reno had a 6 figure salary as a man in his mid 20's. He left that behind to work for free graduate classes and a 10,000 dollar stipend, all because he loved the game. He gave a huge sacrifice for the University and the game of football, and what did he get in return? Screwed by some new high on his hourse AD, who at this point we know to be completely incompetent. I'm glad to hear Reno's back to the real world and doing well, he deserves it.
  2. It's time to fire some people in the athletic department, and I think TW should be the first to go. Ever since he has arrived the entire athletic department has been run like Jones Junior High. With all the investment the University has made in athletic facilities, this is inexcusable. We need someone in charge that will demand excellence in ALL aspects of the department, and TW never has... apparently he's not that kinda guy.
  3. Does Syracuse get good fan support on the road? (or at all for that matter). I still have this image stuck in my head of an empty Carrier Dome from '07, but obviously that was a down year for you guys. I'm just curious has to how SU's fan support stacks up to other state flagship universities like OSU, Michigan, WVU, Maryland, etc.
  4. Syracuse 28 Akron 10 Prove me wrong Zips!!!
  5. Here's what everyone forgets when having these "budget" discussions: The amount of national exposure a 1-A athletic program gives your school is priceless. Would any of us have ever heard of schools like Boise State or TCU or San Jose State for that matter if they didn't have a 1-A football team? Apparently the University of Chicago is a pretty good school. I didn't even know they existed until a few years ago. Every 15 year old kid who picks up a copy of NCAA '11 has at least heard of "Akron". I didn't grow up in Ohio, but when I started to get recruited and got a letter from "The University of Akron", I had already heard of the University from watching sportscenter and playing video games. You can't put a price tag on the national exposure big time athletics gives your school.
  6. Good for him! When you're young and trying to get your foot in the door, you can't exactly turn down offers and wait around for the perfect situation. I'm sure Nick would much rather have returned to his alma mater, but this is a great opportunity for him. I wish him all kinds of success in his post, but certainly not for the sweaters' program in general! HATE RED
  7. The Great GP1 will not be attending. Going to the mountains for the weekend. To be honest, I wouldn't drive across the street to watch a college soccer game let alone 70 miles to Winston-Salem. Go to downtowon WS and start at the Mellow Mushroom. It is kind of in the center of the "things to do" area of the city. Pizza is good. Walking distance from Marriott and Embassy Suites. If you want to go to a really good BBQ place, go to a place called Gadzooks (I think). It is on the street that runs between the basketball arena and the football stadium up the hill on the same "block" and side as the football stadium. You will have to drive there as the bb arena and fb stadiums are off campus a few miles. Jim Noble has a great place to eat in WS as well. Eat a good dinner and go to the Fox and Hound across the street to watch sports after dinner. Thanks for the info. Sorry we won't be meeting, but have a great time in "the mountains"...Smokies? Obviously, I would go much further than across the street to watch Zips Mens Soccer, but no problem if you don't "get it" or "get into it". Just not sure why the sarcasm was necessary. Apparently you've never read any of GP's other posts on this board. Don't take it personally, and don't be such a pussy. You're feeding our stereotype of soccer players and the boys that admire them.
  8. By the looks of him, I would guess no. It may not seem all that important to those of you who never played, but when I was a player there was just automatically a higher level of respect given to the coaches who you knew had played, and played at a high level. When a guy like Paul Winters yelled at you, you kind of just automatically accepted it because you knew he had been there and done exactly what you were doing, and he had put in the sacrifice. He knew what it was about. I can remember a lot of times when coaches who hadn't played were yelling at guys, there were quite a few "shut the f** up"s being muttered around. That level of respect just wasn't there. I loved Lee Owens as a coach, but it was an issue for a lot of guys that he had quit his D3 college team as a freshman. How can you, a guy who couldn't even hack it at a D3 school, sit here and tell me to suck it up and work hard and press through the pain when you couldn't do it yourself, was the basic line of thought. That's not to say that a coach can't earn a majority of guys respect even if he didn't play, as I think LO did. But I was just wondering about Rob, since I don't see it anywhere in his bio.
  9. Juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust messin with ya! I'm sure some of the "Nicely is a star" people on this board just had a mild heart attack Seriously though, does anyone know if there was an official announcement? Not that there's really much doubt, just wondering.
  10. Good stuff but can you be more specific...what street intersection would put you in the middle of the bar district? Here's a link with info on a pretty popular bar down there, which includes a map with some of the other bars/clubs nearby. http://cleveland.metromix.com/bars-and-clu.../374766/content That whole area is pretty nice, much nicer than what you'll find downtown and probably more the type of people you would want to mix with. The main road is Merriman/Riverview Rd. The Dorm is pretty centrally located to the nightlife so if you mapquest directions with the address it'll take you where you want to be. The whole Valley district was developed within the last decade so it only became a hotspot recently, which is why a lot of the old timers on this board don't know much about it. Barley House downtown is nice, but if you want options to hop from bar to bar with places populated by upper/middle class 20 somethings, the Valley is the way to go.
  11. If you're looking for good bars for 20 somethings on Friday or Saturday night, I'd venture to the Valley before Downtown. Just google The Valley Akron, OH and you can find a lot of nice bars and clubs.
  12. The inexperience of the recieving core is also a concern, but I think they're a talented bunch. I wish the GW game was before the Syracuse game so they could get some experience. That's not the way it is though, so guys are just going to have to step up. It reminds me of something my high school coach used to tell me when I became a varsity starter as a freshman. "We don't have time for you to be a freshman." Well, we don't have time for these guys to be inexperienced. Guys need to step up and play to their full potential NOW.
  13. The bottom line is, Nicely just isn't that good. I think I've seen enough now to stand by that statement. I feel bad for those of you ready to declare him the second coming, because I think you're going to be sorely disappointed. I really hope I'm wrong. I hope in a few weeks some of you can quote me on this statement and point out how wrong and ignorant I was. But I've been around football for a long time, I started here, and I've seen a lot of QB's come and go. Nicely doesn't have "it". If we're going to be successful this year, we're going to have to have a strong running game, and we're going to have to hope Nicely protects the ball. He's not the kind of QB that's going to take things on his shoulders and win any games for us. Once again, I hope I'm proven wrong, but I think I've seen enough to know I'm not.
  14. I'm not sure they could put Dan on the radio. Great guy and love him to death, but I have a feeling he'd be a little too honest... and shall we say... forthcoming with his opinions on what he's seeing on the field. I vote for Mrs. Basch over her son Dan. Better overall football knowledge than Dan, and brutally honest and forthcoming. HAHA... yeah Mrs. Basch is something else. Whether you know Mrs. Basch or not, if you attended a Zips game between 2000-2004 you would recognize her voice. During one particular sparsely attended game, and a particularly bad defensive performance, I have a distinct memory of her voice echoing across the Bowl.... "Get your heads OUT OF YOUR ASSES!!!"
  15. Good idea, his name crossed my mind, but I didn't know what he was doing for a living now a days. Still in Akron, taking over his parents' jewelry business I believe. He should have plenty of time on the weekends. I still think he'd be a little too honest in the booth though, ruffle way too many feathers, and be gone after two games
  16. Proximity to an all-you-can eat buffet at Rob's is a factor that should not be overlooked. Aaaahhh and that can be great for the 190 pound freshman linebackers, and suicide for the 330 pound fat guys who need to drop about 20 in camp. We used to have to make the march over to Rob's from Brown in my camps, but I know in the JD years he had the team eating a little bit better over at the Martin Center for meals. Sounds like Ianello has em back at Rob's.
  17. Brown Street is where we all used to live. At one time, it was considered modern living on campus. Christ do I feel old. I wonder what landfill they put Brown Street in? Did you play in the era when jock dorms were still legal? The NCAA had done away with the practice by the time I played, mandating that you couldn't seclude the athletes in their own dorms, so the coaching staff just made sure all the freshman were stuck together in Brown were they could keep an eye on us and then as sophomore year approached it was a race to see who could secure the best party house across exchange (in those oh so lovely neighborhoods where I had the best years of my life). Everyone did still get their Brown experience again when camp rolled around though. Saw some crazy stuff in that dorm, can't believe the Info sits on top of those hallowed grounds now.
  18. 2,121 votes in and we're having a nice showing. 1. Akron 44% 2. Temple 22%
  19. I'm not sure they could put Dan on the radio. Great guy and love him to death, but I have a feeling he'd be a little too honest... and shall we say... forthcoming with his opinions on what he's seeing on the field.
  20. New dorms up all over campus, and they put these guys in BULGER??? I guess it's better than good ole Brown Street, where they used to stick us, but there's certainly much better options on campus nowadays. I don't think these guys deserve to be pampered but camp is miserable enough as it is, if there are options to make it less miserable (like the Exchange st. dorms or the Honors dorm) why not take advantage of it?
  21. Being that he's already redshirted, I would imagine he would want to look at FCS schools being that if he transferred to another FBS he'd only get to play for 3 years.
  22. GREAT new song by Kenny Chesney. I had heard the song, but just now watched the official extended video, and man it takes you back and gives you chills. This isn't exactly Zips related, but I know most of our posters played the game at one point or another, so I'd encourage you to watch this video. It'll take ya back. Damn I miss everything about this game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlXDo5WhQXI
  23. No see, I think this would be a mutually beneficial relationship, in which the issues of both parties can be worked out. We can help him deal with his issue of smoking a little too much reefer, and he can help us deal with our issue of continuously sucking.
  24. Well ain't.... that.... convenient.
  25. Why would you want someone like that? If the reasoning is true why the kicked off the team "dismissed for multiple failed drug tests." The last thing you need on a team is someone like that Guys who like to smoke a little weed don't destroy teams... guys with attitude problems and senses of entitlement do. Give the guy a chance, tell him if he fails one test he's gone, and then leave up to him to either make the best decision for himself or not to. It's a no lose situation. I have a more practical way of keeping him on the team. Tell him if he fails onee test he's gone, and then never drug test him. That's how smart schools run their drug testing. Some of you might be surprised to know how many guys playing college athletics smoke weed on a regular basis. Weed should be legalized anyhow........ I have to get my glaucoma checked. That was the policy when I played... for some strange reason, when those "random" tests came around, the guys with 4.0's going to church every Sunday sure got drawn from that hat often, while the guys who everyone knew was smoking always seemed to "luck out". The only issue was those once a year NCAA tests.... but if you're smoking you've still only got a 10% chance of having your name called for those.
