  1. LOL If volleyball would just drop the pretenses and market itself as "near models being athletic in tight shorts" you would see crowds of 10-20 thousand showing up. (probably with fistfuls of ones) I do believe you're on to something.... now THERE's an athletic event I might consider missing a football game for! A favorite past time of 90's era Zip football players was to peek through the gym windows before and after meetings in the JAR and watch those booties shake. If you can capture the attention of 100 college football players exhausted from practice and a couple hours of film, you can capture the attention of the male population at large. All we need is the right MARKETING and women's vollyballl could be a cash cow!
  2. But Akron MEN do. Go watch a bottom barrel MAC football team or go to a sold out Pouch and watch one of the country's premiere soccer squads. Your choice. I know where I will be. The Pouch? lol.... That's like saying go watch the country's premier bowling team. That's wonderful that they're successful and all, but who really gives a f***? The success of the athletic department will always hinge on football and men's basketball. I've said it before and I'll say it again.... Football and basketball could win MAC Championships, every other athletic team could not win a game, and nobody would bat an eye. TW would be the toast of the town. But if football and basketball lost every game, and every other sport won a national title, TW's ass would be grass, and Proenza would be smokin it. Ole Tom would have the first ticket out of town. It's great that you like soccer, and I support them and love to see them succeed just like I love to see rifle and any other Zip sport succeed, but those sports will always take a back seat to football and basketball, regardless of success. The bottom line is, 95% of people in Akron and UA alumni would rather watch and pay for bad football than nationally ranked soccer any day of the week. Well, I'm glad that I was able to drag ITZ away from his Guinness at the Cock & Bull Pub for long enough to stir up a conversation. So ITZ, have you been able to convince your neighbors in the Midlands there that real football is played by real MEN with enough padding for a team of hookers in London's East End? That it would be more interesting if Wayne Rooney and his mates would stand around in a circle before each kick of the ball so that everyone is aware of the "snap count"? But anyway, congratulations again on matriculating to a country which has its sports priorities better sorted. Cheerio, ITZ. I'll let you get back to imagining how you'll be the toast of the town after Clint Dempsey's game winner come Saturday night around 8:30 in the evening, live from South Africa. Just don't offer to buy a round of Budweisers at the ol' Cock & Bull. They drink ale, like real MEN. The real men of Nottingham join me to watch the real men of Nottingham RFC go to war, while the fairy princesses of the town prance on over to City Ground to watch the boys of Forest FC chase balls.
  3. More like 17th fiddle 1) Pro Football 2) College Football 3) Pro Baseball 4) Pro Basketball 5) College Basketball Tie 6) Pro Hockey Tie 6) College Baseball (it's HUGE in the southeast/south/west) 8) High School Football 9) Womens College Basketball 10) Pro Soccer 11) Pee Wee Football 12) Little League Baseball 13) Arena Football 14) College Softball 15) WNBA 16) Pro Bowling 17) College Soccer I'd actually put College Volleyball ahead of soccer on that list. It's a helluva lot easier to convince a bunch of guys to go watch tall skinny college girls jumping around in spandex than a bunch of queer looking skinny college boys prancing around a field, locks flowing, chasing balls.

  5. These "workshops" are becoming commonplace across the college football landscape. My first reaction when the U of Hawaii started it several yrs ago was, "what a sexist idea" -- they exclude men from these events to make the ladies "more comfortable". Now my wonderment is elsewhere: It may be time for Coach Porter and the athletic department to begin workshops exploring the finer parts of The Beautiful Game. Unfortunately, it appears it is too late to time it in concert with the World Cup. But something needs to be done to increase interest in our national power team to the point that tickets must be purchased in advance for every game, because a sellout is likely. Go Zips. in waiting. Caleb would be teaching crickets. American MEN don't even care about soccer.
  6. Hasn't even coached a game and has already alienated the biggest supporters the program has. Nice work Rob I was always a critic of JD's coaching and recruiting, but I always gave him credit for being an excellent human being and a humble guy, and the same went for his entire staff. Rob Ianello and staff already seem like a bunch of pricks. First the shady text message that he didn't have the balls to say to a player's face, and now he just doesn't seem to see any importance in getting to know the program's supporters and cancels an event that a lot of people look forward to all year. Guess he has better things to do... All I have to say is that if you're going to act like God's gift to this program, then you better coach like it too. Nobody has a problem with an asshole who wins. But assholes who lose get a lot less leeway than the nice guys with the same record.
  7. I'm sure you gained so much insight while riding the pine. You have any idea how much talking goes on behind the scenes? Any idea how decisions are made, or how coaches find out about other jobs? You really think TW didn't have the entire staff knowing what was going to happen if they failed? Do you really think the coaching staff didn't already know going into the season what was going to happen? TW started September 10th (officially). Reno resigned 10/31 (officially). A whole 41 days. Everyone wants to blame the new guy, but Hunter had more information on the goings on than anyone. If any decision was made TW only signed off on it. It was JD's hire, he had as much say in it as anyone. But you guys jump on the AD. With no proof of what went on from the University's side. Riding the pine oooorrrr starting three years... but that's irrelevant to this discussion. What is relevant is that you're a moron with absolutely ZERO idea of how things work, and zero clue of what went on in this case. Have a nice weekend.
  8. Well good for you that you support a "friend". But at least I know my guesses are complete bs considering I've been told so by the the biggest bs spiller on here. Countdown to ITZ giving up on the Zips (again) 3 months. Ok, you're wrong, and your pride is hurt, and you look like an idiot. We get it. Eat crow and move on. None of that actually. I'm tired of you and your tired BS. But other than that I'm quite fine. I'm not attacking Reno, but I am saying until someone provides something legit, I'm not abandoning my opinion of what happened. Until someone proves otherwise; Reno was in the wrong, left on his own and had a sour taste because he didn't like how things went with the new bosses (happens all the time) and said how he felt about it. People take one side as fact. I still believe TW told Reno what the outcome was going to be if he stayed, I still believe TW handled the situation professionally. You have absolutely no clue how the AD to coaching staff relationship works in college football, do ya. The assertation that an AD told an assistant coach to go ahead and resign because he was going to be fired anyways, kind of a "hey lemme give you a little inside information to help you out buddy", is probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard on this board. Please quit now.
  9. This is NOT the type of game you want on national television.
  10. Well good for you that you support a "friend". But at least I know my guesses are complete bs considering I've been told so by the the biggest bs spiller on here. 11. I'll just come out and say it: I know Reno personally, and your "conjectures" g-mann, are a bunch of bullshit.
  12. I was really scared that I was going to open this thread and learn something about Rob that I really didn't wanna know....
  13. I do. Every MAC team was excited about making the road trip to Florida. It was a lot more attractive than Muncie or Ypsalanti. I know every Zips player during that era had the Florida trip marked on their calendar. Spot on.
  14. It's an entertainment business. He HAS earned everything he's got. He sells more tickets, more shoes, more sweatbands, more T-shirts. Sponsors pay more dollars when a network shows his game. The Cavs are worth at least ten times as much with him on the roster. He makes other people rich, he should get his too. When Barbara Streisand signs at a concert and the tickets are over $200 each, she EARNED every penny of what she makes. It doesn't matter whether she is at her best, or the band wins a grammy. Her presence makes other people rich, she should get hers too. By your thinking, Darko Miličić should be in the hall of fame instead of Karl Malone. Shandon Anderson should replace Charles Barkley. They got the rings... Speaking of Darko, don't forget the fact that without LeBron, there is no NBA basketball in Cleveland. Idiotic statements all the way around. Again, see the difference between being WORTH something (ie, having the capability to bring in profits) and EARNING something (ie, having your PERFORMANCE JUSTIFY YOUR WAGES) Your analogy with Darko and Shandon are idiotic because those guys were not the supposed "star" players of their championship teams nor their leaders. Stars are judged by their ability to lift their team to victory, their ability to get it done in primetime. That's the difference between the Karl Malones and Charles Barkelys in comparison to the Magics, Birds, Jordans, Chamberlin's, etc. Lebron James is on Malone and Barkley's level. The only thing Cleveland is "Witness" to is a player with a great skill set who doesn't have the intangibles to be a truely great player, only a player who puts up great numbers but chokes when the pressure is on.
  15. Every mentions Lebron & Jordan, and the lack of championships. Jordan didn't win his first championship until he was almost 30. Jordan, Johnson, Bryant, Bird, Pierce & Thomas all had/have solid supporting casts. You take Lebron out, the Cavs have a 30 win team. He has never had a real supporting cast. I also would love to see Lebron playing under the "Jordan" rules. No Zone defenses at all, can start running from the wing and not get called for traveling. Also remember, the league royally sucked when Jordan was playing. Saying Lebron has no supporting cast is an absolute JOKE and something the Lebron cockriders of Cleveland go to by default when you point out the fact that the guy can't get the job done in primetime. Lebron has two other all-star caliber players with him in Mo and Jamieson. He has one of the deepest benches in the NBA. What a ridiculous statement. Lebron has twice as much around him right now than Jordan had in 4 out of 6 of his championships. Jordan won his first championship in his sixth season, when he finally got SOME help around him (the playoff teams before 90 that he led to similar success that the Cavs have had recently had NO TALENT WHATSOEVER). Lebron is now entering his 8th season and has done nothing but choke year after year after year. He's a Hall of Fame caliber player, just not one of the top 5 players of all time, and not a leader.
  16. The bars, restaurants, hotels, parking lots, etc in that area cannot stay open year round if all they have is basically 5 months of baseball crowds to sell to. The arena needs far less workers for small crowds. For AHL games they curtain off entire levels. Sporting goods stores would take a hit. Gas stations along the highways leading to Cleveland. The airport. We're not only talking about the 20,000 fans per night at those 50+ games per year, we also look at a huge influx of media. Sometimes there are more media reps at the games than the number of paying fans who showed up for some of the Stepien Cavs games. He is responsible for literally millions of dollars flowing into the local economy. He makes other people wealthy and generates jobs. He earns every penny he makes. There's a difference between EARNING every penny he makes, and being WORTH every penny he makes. Worth it? Yes, for the reasons you've cited above. Earning it? No, as a player making that kind of money and with that kind of hype should win championships. Lebron isn't a leader of men, and doesn't have that same killer instinct and "it" factor that Jordan and Bird had, and that Kobe now has. When things get heated, players making that kind of money "earn" their check by stepping up and taking the game over. Lebron starts tossing up halfhazard shots, giving up turnovers, and basically completely folds, and we've seen that every year in the playoffs. So yes, he is "worth" his pay in terms of what he brings to the franchise and local economy financially, but up until this point in his career, he hasn't EARNED anything. Also, Cleveland will sell out an arena or stadium for any winning team. Having Lebron James on the Cavs is not the only way to have a winning team. The Cavs have a solid core of players outside of Lebron, and if he leaves there are still many players out there in free agency this year to bring in for far cheaper and who may in fact improve the chemistry of the team, and may in fact be guys who are leaders, not simply talented ballers who always want the spotlight on them but then choke when the spotlight gets too bright. Lebron leaving is not necessarily the end of the Cavs success and thus the end of people showing up at Cavs games and buying Cavs merchandise.
  17. If it's in our damn facility we better be able to sell whatever the hell we want GP. On a side note of sorts, I'm not sure why some of you try to act like Lebron James staying in Cleveland would have some kind of an effect on the U's athletics... Lebron has never done anything for the U outside of attend a couple of games and confisicate footage from JAR cameramen (but really, why should he do anything? he's not a UA alum). If Don the Drunk wants to stroke Mr. James off for political capital, his office might be a better place for that than our shiny new stadium that the city did NOTHING to help us build.
  18. Ron is probably too old at this point (though I think he could have quite an insurgent candidacy in '12 if he chooses to run again), but I could definitely see Rand at the top of the Republican ticket 2 to 3 elections down the road, especially as younger conservatives start to rise up in the party. Non-interventionism, sound monetary policy, civil liberties, and small government is the future of the Republican Party. More of a move towards socialism is probably ahead for the Dems. The middle ground (which I think is worthless anyways and what got us into this mess in the first place) is quickly disappearing and Americans are going to have to decide what it is they want: Maximum freedom and the ability to rise and fall on one's own merits, or cradle-to-the-grave care from a big government.
  19. They just transitioned into a scholarship program in 2008, according to this article. http://www.bigsouthsports.com/ViewArticle....;ATCLID=1567864 I knew there was a reason I thought they were non-scholly.
  20. I don't think Stony Brook is even a scholarship program. That one could get painful
  21. I was with them until they starting claiming that the government planned the 911 attacks. If you ignore the conspiracy theory side of it, it's extremely informative. To simply ignore because 'scholars' told you so makes you equivalent to someone without a high school education. The religious claims of the film are more bogus and completely unhistorical than the 9-11 babble. And believe me my friend, I have more first hand knowledge on those subjects than anyone on this board with my educational background (I would suppose). My only point with the scholars was the fact that secular scholars who would love to believe some of the claims laugh them off. Do some independent research and get back to me (and the rest of the educated world). Zeitgeist is nothing but a fraud aimed at dummies from beginning to end.
  22. Solid first post my friend Welcome to the Zipsnation.
  23. I notice the one guy who really created the problem has not issued a statement. I was thinking the same thing. What kind of message are you sending to your players (no pun intended) when you force Lemon to issue a statement like this but you're the guy who caused the whole thing because you were trying to send a text message behind the guy's back of something you didn't have the cajonas to say to his face? If you're gonna make Lemon eat his shit and do this then you should at least issue a public apology yourself. If I'm a recruit looking at what kind of man I want to play for, Ianello looks like a little weasel.
  24. Statement from Mondo "Primetime" Sewell, cut and pasted from facebook....
  25. Go to hell. That's a wierd response, ITZ. I'm not sure why you guys give eguins so much grief. I agree with him. I don't know how Ken+ is FBS, either. That's what bourbon will do to ya. But I stand by my statement.
