Spring Football - What's the deal?
Zipsrifle replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Yea, I understand. How are you supposed to sell season tickets when the great new head coach tells you that your team will suck. I just wish I could get a better read on how the team will come out this year. Who's going to the spring game? I can't make it but I'm hoping to get some good info here. -
No, far from it. I will be some day when I win the lottery. There is only one problem though, I don't play the lottery.

I was thinking about this today. Since Frye will be a taken in the first few rounds, does anybody think he'll hold out for more money? If he does go in the first round, does this give him extra incentive to hold out? I haven't really paid much attention to this area in the past so I don't know the way things typically go. Once Art Modell took the Browns to Baltimore, I haven't paid nearly as much attention to the NFL. Anyway, is it pretty much standard fare that the first draft pick for each team holds out? Do later picks hold out as well? Is it only the "best" drafted players nationally who hold out? I can see why a player would want to hold out. Seems to me that a lot of the "Great" college players end up sucking in the NFL. It seems that if you win the Heisman anymore you're doomed to a bad NFL career. You want to get the money while it's good. On the other hand, these guys make more in their signing bonus than I'll make in my lifetime. Personally, I don't think that an NFL team will give their first, second, or third draft pick a raw deal. Charlie has played this entire NFL scouting thing better than anyone! He's participated in the Senior Bowl, attended all the workouts and worked his A$$ off inbetween. On top of that, he's managed to stay very humble after everyone continues to praise him. If the money is good, I hope he takes it. Metz won't let him get screwed and I wouldn't want him to start off by pissing off all the fans on his new team that don't even know who he is.

Spring Football - What's the deal?
Zipsrifle replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Write up on GoZips.com Some comments on the article. I always try to take what JD says with a grain of salt. I should have known better at the beginning of last season, but I thought we would come out better against PSU. Since then, I try not to look too much into it. I guess I'm suprised to hear that JD comments on how Biggs continues getting better. He was good last year, we'll need him at his best this year. In addition to Biggs, no mention about the QB's. Is Jabari still #1? I'm curious, sounded like Luke had the job in the bag from all the talk last season. If Luke and Jabari are that close, does Jabari go to WR to help out in that position? -
The soccer program continues to be on the move. Continually being one of the best teams in the confrence. Booking more quality teams will only help the Zips get better and give us more opportunities to pull off an upset. Nice job! I might have to attend the game at Oakland University if there isn't a football game that weekend.

How do you think the zips will do?
Zipsrifle replied to Ryno aka Menace's topic in Akron Zips Football
All good predictions, but I'll hold off for a while. If the MTSU game were later in the season last year, I say no contest. We were still learning how to walk during that game. I'll have to see what kind of hit they took this year from graduation, but I think we'll pull it out in Tenn. I can't wait for the BG game, nice short drive! -
How many names can we come up with for the ABJ?
Zipsrifle posted a topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Quite a few ABJ names have been thrown around. Here are a few I've seen. It's slow, and some of the ingenuity around here is amazing. Stink'n Urinal Broken Urinal Jerkin' Banal -
I think my stuff showed up yesterday but I didn't open it. I just avoid all the hassle and call the ticket office. I had reserved last year but will get the general admission this year since I sit in the endzone. It always varies how many of my friends will come to the games with me. I try to make it as easy as possible for them to come. Sitting in the cheap seats where they can always find me minimizes excuses, plus I can make all the noise I wan't and not have "Silent Fans" complaining that I'm too loud. I'm just going to give my tickets to some of my friends back in Ohio, I can't make the game from Michigan.

So, will the South side of the Zip Strip be gone???

I totally agree with the points that if we won, this thread wouldn't be here. We are in the position where we won't have anything given to us....We'll have to take it. At least we are in a position to be screwed like this....I can't remember the last time we had this problem.

I hated you people. Why does a 1 credit hour Engineering lab require 4 hours of class and 3 hours of homework a week? Still, I think every minute was worth it! Nerds RULE!

I hear you Zipsalong! Although I am a Browns fan, I don't want Charlie to go there. If he does and the Clowns do what they typically do (lose), then everyone in Cleveland will say..."See, that guy from Akron sucks". He'll be cast off and everyone in NE Ohio will continue to look at Akron as a D-II program and Charlie and his family will never hear the end of it. I hope he goes somewhere else, someplace that has some type of winning tradition. Someplace where he won't be thrown to the wolves right away, get the $#!+ kicked out of him and then told he sucks. If he falls on his face, big deal, nobody anywhere else in the country cares about Zips football and Charlie and his family won't have to put up with the constant BS from local fans. I hate Art Modell.

New Exchange St. Residence Hall
Zipsrifle replied to UA Fan's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Hey, I have some great memories in those rubber workers houses. Parties, Cops, burning furniture, Tear Gas. Ahhh, the memories. -
It doesn't appear to be televised nationally. They play Western and I can't even see the game in Michigan on TV. Bummer.

I want a gold T-Shirt!

I think 989 has a valid point. Think about the Football game vs Marshall and how everyone left at 1/2 time. Akron is too used to their teams falling apart. It'll take some time.

Are MAC Tourney Games Televised Nationally?

Thanks Bandman.......I'm an idiot! -
Well, the Zips took second to a national powerhouse in Navy. Even if they would have had their best day all year, they probably wouldn't have overtaken the numbers Navy put up. Scores seem a little down from their peak mid-season but it was still a decent showing. A good end to a stellar year. Attached at the end is a link to the NCAA Championship qualifiers. If you click you'll see that the Zips were entirely capable of making the top 8 in Smallbore. Still work to do in Air Rifle. Coach said they would need to hit 2300's to have a shot (pun intended) at making the Championship match. The team continues to get better and better every year. I think we'll crack the top 8 very soon. The team was very deep this year and though Tom, Sarah, and Joe will be missed, I expect a strong showing again next year. Recruiting should continue to improve also with the continued success. Great season folks, it was exciting for at least one member of zipsnation. I can remember when the team had an outside chance at making the NCAA Championships. This year, it wouldn't have suprised any of the Zips Rifle fans if we would have cracked the Top 8. Work hard in the off season, that is one thing that we'll need to do to get over the top next year. What is the another thing? Pray that coach gets better at picking the team Date: March 5, 2005 Location: Virginia Military Institute in Lexington VA Event: Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference Championships Akron Rifle is #2 in MAC Milano and Carpenter lead the way In the Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC), participating schools are placed in classifications ranging from pro-marksman to master. Earning its way into the master classification, The University of Akron competes against other master class schools like The US Coast Guard Academy, MIT, Norwich, and The US Naval Academy. The top two schools from each class are invited to compete for the title of conference champion. This season the Zips were invited to the Virginia Military Institute in Virginia, to go head to head with Navy for the top spot in the conference. The Navy midshipmen proved they had what it takes to out shoot the Zips and capture the title of MAC champions. Senior Team Co-captain Joe Milano concluded his record setting collegiate shooting career in grand fashion by leading his team with a 576 out of a possible 600 in the smallbore division. With the help of his teammates the Zips finished a slim 89 points behind Navy. In the air rifle division Freshman sensation Martha Carpenter lit up the scoreboard with her team leading 574 out of a possible 600. With the help of her teammates Shannon Kohatsu-Jelsma (567), Tom Colston (565), and Angie Engle (552), the Zips crept to within 83 points of Navy. Co-captain and graduating senior Tom Colston tied his career best score with his performance at this match. This match will conclude the season for the Zips, but Navy will travel to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to compete in the NCAA championships starting on March 10. This was a banner season for the Zips who captured the Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference title and is now the #2 team in the Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference as well as setting many new school records this season. “This is absolutely the toughest part of the season for me as a coach,†states coach Newt Engle, “Seniors Tom Colston, Sarah Kramer and Joe Milano have been with us for 4 years and will now graduate and join the ranks of honored alumni. As I wonder how the seniors could possibly be replaced I see the eager faces of the remaining team members dreaming of next season, just like Tom, Sarah, and Joe used to do.†What the seniors have started will undoubtedly be carried on by very capable returning and new Zips sharpshooters. Are MAC Tourney Games Televised Nationally?
Zipsrifle replied to Zipsrifle's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Thanks for the upate. I took a look at the pairings and I might have multiple chances to tune in. If the Zips beat Eastern, do the get Western at home or in Kalamazoo? If I were at home and not traveling I would have made the trip to Kalamazoo! Of course, I will be nowhere near a MAC School during the tournament so I'll have to tune in. -
Very true GP1. Like I said, a team effort.
-
I didn't watch the game, but man, it gets the board going when someone puts things bluntly. Looks like you whacked a hornets nest with a stick King! This is entertaining from the sidelines!

Are MAC Tourney Games Televised Nationally?
Zipsrifle replied to Zipsrifle's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
OK, I'm embarrased to admit this, but I have no idea how the MAC tournament works. My guess is if the Zips play a Michigan team I should be able to find the game since I will still be in the state. What are the chances of that happening? -
King, I have to believe that everyone on the field gave 100%. Did 5 have more ability than anyone? Yes. I just don't believe that the team didn't give it their all. I have to agree that Frye carried the team on 11/5, but have to disagree with the OU game, Lefall had a hell of a day. What got this thing started? Can't. Who stepped up at the Can't game, the D. Once things got rolling, last season it seemed like everyone was focused on the next game.
