You want to look at stats. Well then we will look at stats. Consider: Akrons first 3 drives: 1:04, 3:15, :57 Miamis first 3 drives: :58, 8:30, 1:02 That is over a 5 min. difference going early into the second 1/4 alone. Not good, but we lead there. Early in the game we really didn't give them great field position a few times. Their first 3 drives started from: Miami20, Miami20, and Miami20. Now thats not bad. Then consider the good field position we did give them: 50, Miami44, Akron44, Akron41, 50 again, Akron15, Miami45, That is 7 drives that they started beyond their own 40. 5 of those either at midfield or inside Akron territory. It is easy to see why we caught up to them in T.O.P. when you look at that. A shorter field invariably means a shorter drive.

If the only point of reference is the Miami game, then nothing. However, we did see him play well early in the season and have limited mistakes. If a person does it once, he can do it again. Second, he did play better against Miami than against Buffalo or the second half of CMU. The ability is there, he just has to do it. Again, Miami scored 51 points. How is that on Getsy? The defense was just bad Saturday. If your refering to MTSU and NIU then I still don't know if you have a huge point. It seems to me that we made ALOT of mistakes in the redzone against MTSU. NIU as sad as it is to say, we should have lost. We had them down and out and we made the mistake of letting them back in it. Save the defense willing themselves back into it in OT and Biggs fighting for every inch on the football field he could get, NIU wins that game. Also for those of you pinning things on the D. Get real here please. A defense can only do so much when they are constantly on the field (even early in the game the T.O.P. was heavily lopsided in Miami's favor), and the O is giving the other team the ball in great field position. I don't care who you are. Your D is not gonna hold up when your giving the other team the ball right back 6 times. Another point. Is anyone else frustrated as hell with our kicking game? Sullivan had a 7 yard punt  and Swiger misses and X-tra point What is that all about?

I think Getsy will be fine as long as he can limit his mental mistakes. Remember, this guy is a first year starting QB. He sat the bench his entire career at Pitt. Turnovers and a lack of defense killed us yesterday. Let's assume Getsy throws the ball away in the first half which he should have done. It would have been third and long and probably a field goal try. Explain how we overcome 51 points. Getsy should not be blamed as much as he is, but he deserves some blame because, as I said before, the QB is the one person most able to impact the outcome of a game. Also, don't put much weight into what French says. If the 3-3-5 defense is designed to stop passing, how come Miami converted third and long at will yesterday? I'm sorry, but the defense played horrible yesterday. How many times did Miami have to punt yesterday? I can only remember 4 or 5 at the most. They missed two easy field goals, they should have had 57. The offense is only to blame? The bottom line is the Zips lack the athletic ability of the upper level MAC schools. This has been the case since the school entered the MAC. Getting our asses kicked by Miami did not start with Getsy. It has been going on for many years. Why would it stop yesterday with a young team. Also, there is not enough depth on this team,or any other MAC team, to start making wholesale changes. The Zips are what they are and if they want to win, they need to start getting the players to play better. One last thing. I saw a lot of crying from posters on this board about not going to games if they don't beat Army. What the Hell else do you have to do with your time that you can't go to a game? Ok, what in the world gives you the impression that Getsy is suddenly gonna stop making mental mistakes? What from Miami shows you that? Enlighten me cause I'm stumped here. Ever since the second half at CMU he has done little but make mental mistakes. I just don't see it stopping. Sorry.

Just from listening to a good portion of the game (came in somewhere in the middle of the 2nd 1/4). I still can't figure out what the big deal is with Getsy. If you remember back to early in the 2nd half when he threw it into triple coverage. French said on the radio that Luke never looked off of Hixon. 23 is Lukes safety valve and everyone in this league knows it. If Luke continues to refuse to run the check down he's NEVER going to be an effective QB. I think a good point has already been made about leadership and the level the team plays at. There are no leaders on this team right now. When things turn sour there is NOONE to step up and rally the troops and it just spirals out of control. I turned the damn game off after they were up by 14 and Luke had thrown another pick. No sense in putting myself through listening to that. The team had already tanked it and there was noone there to get them back. I mentioned on here last year during our big run how crucial turnovers are. I think at one time during that run that we were something like +13 in the turnover ratio. What are we this year? -13 or so right now. Good way to loose ballgames. We are 3-3 right now. If this season has any chance of getting back on track it HAS TO be against Army. Forget the MAC East crown. It isn't gonna happen. But we need to have a big end to the season here to build on. If nothing else we need to start getting the young guys in to see exactley where we are for next year. I'd hate to say it, but right now this season is about building for next year. There is no way in hell that BG is gonna loose two conference games. JD has to sit down and make some REAL tough decisions this week. I sure as hell hope that there was a team meeting this morning and he looked every one of those players in the eye and asked them if they still wanna play football. We're gonna have to bench some people here and the guys who don't wanna play should be the first guys to ride the bench. See you all at the Army game.

I'm on campus now but driving home in a min. just got back from an event. Forgot what station it is that carries the game. Can someone please remind me so I can listen in on the way home?

We come out of the gate strong, building on what we did late at Buffalo. But Miami matches our intensity and takes the W. Remember, this is a DESPERATE football team. One more loss for the Redhawks and their MAC East coffin is virtually nailed up. If they play like a team playing for their lives than our Zips won't have much of a shot. If they believe that their season is already over (it isn't) then the Zips could take one from them. I disagree with previous posts about which Akron team shows up dictating this game. I think it is gonna have to do more with what mentality the Redhawks have. Sorry, I just don't see us winning this one. Miami- 31 Akron- 21

Funny thing too. Fox 8 was pimpin themselves all Friday night cause David Lee Morgan wrote a 5 page feature story on Fox 8's Friday night High School football coverage. I think thats more than he has written about the Zips in the last 3 years.

Pardon me for nitpicking, but isn't this a little contradictory. Otherwise I whole heartedly agree. Gotta stick with what works and play your ballgame.

I'll echo what others have said. Defense won that game. They need to get on the offense for a little help here. That was a pathetic performance to listen too. I know the weather was bad but still. I can't take back what I said about Getsy last week, but I'm still not ruling out taking it back sometime down the road. If he's hurt then that isn't really his problem. Thats JD's. If JD is being stubborn and playing the kid hurt then he's not giving us a fair chance to win games. Period. The o-line better get a damn good chewing out this week too. Not just for the two personal fouls but for the lack of time they gave Getsy for most of the game. It also didn't really sound like they were opening up holes for Biggs and the running game a whole lot. Those guys need to step up or its gonna be a LONG day in Miami.
-
Tell me I'm not listening to this. Bulls are DOMINATING our o-line. Getsy's like 3-11 now for 14 yards. D is on the field to long again. Stupid penalties. And now on top of it all Hixon drops the punt and gives them good field position. What a wonderful time to be a zips fan

You want an excuse for why we sucked at the beginning of last season? How about a new coach working his first job as a head coach? How about a QB trying to learn an entirely new system with little to no experience at the WR position? I guess I must just be forgetting that we play the game on paper. Statistics don't mean piddly if you have no leadership skills. Thats what Frye brought to the table that I'm just not seeing from Getsy. Remember how we turned things around at the end of last year. That can be attributed to two things. Number one is that the team started to learn the system. Number two was that Charlie and other senior leaders took this team by the throat and said "damn it we don't wanna go out like this." I will gladly retract my statements about Luke if he steps up to the plate and takes this team by the reigns after this pathetic loss, and we come back with two good road games. If we continue to tank it then you can keep throwing all the statistics you want at me, none of them will matter.

We never went to the run. Stop telling me we abandoned it. We threw 36 times in the first half 36. Good running football teams don't throw that much in an entire game. You can't give up on something you never tried. When we did run Biggs was pretty effective, but noone seemed to care.

Its not just one bad game. Getsy was overthrowing on too many passes vs. NIU. I had a friend in the stands who said it to me but I wrote it off b/c he's not really much of a football buff, but watching last nights game it was apparent that Luke has a real bad habit of overthrowing recievers. Thats a good way to get alot of INT's and get alot of recievers killed. Add to that the fact that we don't really have much of an O-line (Sorry to those of you who thought we did, so did I at one time, we really don't) and Luke just panics when under pressure. Watch him and he stops looking downfield, then when he feels he has a big enough cushion he looks down field and lets one fly to the first gold helmet he finds. No directing traffic, no looking for the open reciever. At least two of the INT's, or near INT's that he threw last night he had Biggs WIDE OPEN and RIGHT NEXT to him with probably a 7+ yard run after an easy throw. What does he do? He trys to thread the needle into good coverage. Result of play is an incompletion at best. And think about this. Why is it that Getsy is getting alot of passing yards? Is it b/c he's throwing the right pass at the right time and getting the big downfield play? Or is it b/c were throwing the ball 45+ times a game and running alot of plays that require talented recievers to make good runs after the catch?

Z.I.P. the faith is about dead. We're still a middle of the road team and Getsy is NOT the answer at QB. No way does BG loose more MAC games than us and its doubtful that Miami will either. The only solice I can take out of that one is at least were not Pitt who would actually be better off with Getsy back, is it too late to deny his transfer?

What Indians and Zips have in common
Quickzips replied to zipsbandman's topic in Akron Zips Football
They were ready to play. In the first half. Just looked like they got a 10 point lead at the end of the half and figured that was enough. Lets stop kidding ourselves guys. We eeked out a win at home vs. NIU and thought we had recieved our welcome letter into the MAC elite. We're still a MAC program thats slowly trying to crawl out of the cellar. We're not at the top and we're not at the bottom. We're just somewhere in the middle with a young coach who let a young team get too full of themselves after one big win. Hopefully JD and this team has learned their lesson. If they haven't then we're doomed for another X amount of Lee Owens style football years. Hopefully this is one case in which history does not repeat itself. -
Even with NIU Getsy was overthrowing recievers. It didn't matter though b/c NIU had NO pass defense. If he can't lower the ball down a bit its gonna be a long season.
-
What in the hell was that? We dominated DOMINATED the first half. In all actuality shoulda been up by more than that. Did JD just let the guys settle in at the half and not make any adjustments? God did that suck. Some thoughts. Getsy sucks. Get over it, anyone who calls him the next Frye is out of their mind. Dude overthrows recievers constantly. Were throwing to much early. Getsy threw 36 TIMES IN THE FIRST HALF ALONE. Why? Biggs might not have broken a bunch of 30+ yarders but he wasn't at all ineffective. How can you have a QB throwing 36 times in the first friggin half? Defense wasn't the problem at all. It continues to be the offenses lack of ability to sustain drives and keep the D of the field for a breather. If these guys can't step it up on offense and give the D some help were gonna loose alot more games What was with the punt team tonight? Sullivan looked like shit most of the night, and that like 15 yard punt, hell I've seen highschoolers punt better than that. What was with all the flags that they were pickin up? Since when do we throw a flag and then pick it up 3 times in one game. I refuse to believe that all those were not penalties. My final thought.

They did it on every kickoff. It got annoying after about the 3rd or 4th time. Wasn't really an appropriate rally point and the crowd seemed more confused than anything.
-
I think as critical as BG and Miami are I think OU could be the big test for the Zips. They played us pretty close last year and Solich has 'em firing on all cylinders pretty well early on in the season. Could be a game that we could overlook and therefore get upset at. Doubtful that JD would let the guys overlook it but it could happen.
-
Couple Thoughts: NIU showed up for MAYBE one complete quarter of the whole game. It looked like after they put up that 14 on us early that they figured that would be enough and tanked it. Once they did they really didn't get it going again til the 4th. This offense is a threat to go the distance on any given play. NIU missed alot of tackles but our guys put ALOT of good moves on. Hixons long TD he did an excellent job of making guys miss and reversing field. It was beautiful. That said, the offense needs to sustain more drives. The reason NIU came back at the end of the game was b/c the D was tired from being on the field alot. The reason for that was all of our drives in the second half were 3 and outs or 1:30, 78 yard, 3 play TD drives. Then the D is right back on the field. Don't get me wrong, you never wanna take points off the board by getting to conservative to run clock but we need a happy balance. I'm REAL impressed with the RB's. Biggs picked up right where he left off last year and I'm convinced that Kennedy will pick up right where Brett leaves off when he graduates. Defensivly we looked good right up until the end of the 4th. Very few missed tackles out there. Even when we had to make the shoestring we made it quite frequently. Its nice to see a team that flocks to the ball, wraps up, and brings em down. Far too often we see teams (not just the Zips) who make the hit but don't follow through, or simply try to arm tackle. Good job by JD and the staff gettin these guys to finish it off Was that first PAT not the strangest play you'd ever seen? Are we a legit threat to win the East now? BG is in near crisis mode after the start to their season and Miami has looked incredibly bland. The game we can't overlook though is OU. The bobcats are playing under Solich and could be just as big a test to us at BG and Miami.

Saw Crouch today walking around campus. Seemed to be just fine. No limp, no casts, no wraps. Nothing.
