He punched a player in the throat.

tarnished, yes... but his successes as a coach cannot be discounted. I'll still remember him as the greatest coach in CFB history.
To give a bit of perspective, Woody Hayes is still regarded as one of the best OSU coaches, but nobody will ever forget what he did.
What'd he do? Is it something to do with the Alamo? I know I'm supposed to remember that for some reason.....

All hinges on CK's Harney 20 Rule.
This picture is a pretty good foreshadowing. As I think Harney may very well end up in the rafters next to those banners someday.
-
CK should change his Harney rule to 20-or-20
If Harney get's 20 minutes we will win, or if he get's 20 points we will win. And then create a sliding scale between the two.

The actual wording makes it sound more like a wish than a plan:
Also, Coach Michael Sadjadi and the rest of the Zips staff recently met with University of Akron Athletic Director Tom Wistrcill to discuss the future of the program and a possible move from club sport to NCAA scholarship program.
If the Hockey club is so inclined, they could gauge interest by hosting an outdoor hockey event at the Info or First Energy against a club from somebody the students know of.

I don't really want to ask this because (1) I could be wrong and I hate being wrong, but (2) worse yet, I could be right.... but....
What if no kids want to buy Akron basketball jerseys?
Well, here is the deal with that.
If I want to buy something in the jersey area, I don't want the generic version of it. I think most people are like that. Why spend $40-50 on a cheap un-authentic version of something.
Since we have never offered the real thing (except when we were closing the Rubber Bowl and dumped a ton of the old real jerseys on people which sold out in minutes) we don't know how well they would sell.
The problem is asking the right people, Barnes & Noble unfortunately handles our Zips merchandise. So they get the request of the AD but corporate probably doesn't see fit to do it. It took me 10 e-mails and 3 phone calls to get the Akron Fathead to be available. But I can't make any ground on authentic jerseys.

If he gets a new arena built, he'd be the best thing to happen in the history of UA. I'd suggest putting a statue of him up instead of Buchtel haha or at least right next to his just 2x the size.
No Buchtel will face out towards Central and then there will be be 2 Proenza statues.
The first will be behind Buchtel Hall in Coleman Commons.
The second will stradle Can't State, slightly squated making a "cup of tea" if you will, and be visible from the University of Akron campus.

I tend to agree with this. Unless a new arena were some kind of community/university facility, I don't see how to justify seating for 12-15,000 when we can rarely draw more than 4,500 as it is.
I'm not sure of the complexity of a JAR overhaul. Getting rid of the track would be the most important improvement, IMO, but I don't know how that would affect either the supporting structure itself or the rooms beneath both the track and the existing GA seating.
Personally, I think if you could eliminate the track and thereby move all of the GA seats closer to the floor, the JAR could be a pretty nice venue.
A JAR overhaul will be exceptionally complex. say we make permanent seating in the hole facility. Now there are no areas to practice. OK, one court to practice on. Unlike now where when all seats are pulled back you have plenty of practice area.
That is why I am of the opinion that a JAR rennovation isn't an option.
As for cost. Say it's a $50 million rennovation to make it a 5000 seat venue with a lounge area that can view the game. You now have to find practice and play space for volleyball, and men's/women's basketball. Plus it would take at least a year to two years. So now you have to lease a place to play. No place in Akron to house it. Maybe Firestone, you cut attendance in half and it isn't what you would call collegiate friendly. Lost revenue.
I highly doubt the JAR will ever be torn down. It will likely be turned into the Athletic center and be a joint practice/academic/administrative building. Because that kind of renno is in the $5-10 million range.

Congratulations, you took one away from us. I don't expect this to be the norm however. He is a hometown boy for you guys.
Neither do any of us, as we no longer have a coach so horrible that recruits run to the likes of you or Can't to get away from him.

Too many programs overlooked the great experience/knowledge/relationships Coach Bowden gained while he was broadcasting for ABC, ESPN and Westwood One, writing for Yahoo, and doing motivational speaking across the country for the 10 years he was not coaching. Plus the fact, he learned from possibly the greatest "salesman" ever in college football - his father. Akron is going to be the beneficiary of all of this - and if things go the right way - he could take the Zips not only to a MAC Championship, but also to the next level and a National Championship. The Bowden's are very loyal - Bobby at FSU for 34 years even though he was offered many other jobs, Tommy staying at Clemson for 10 years, even when he knew he'd probably get fired if he didn't win the ACC Championship the following year (when he was offered the Arkansas job a few years ago), etc... I see Coach Bowden building his own legacy at Akron.
Good, because I think we could all use 15-20 years of excellent Zips football.

Why on earth would any athlete not want to play in/for Hawaii? I've wondered this for years. Shouldn't Hawaii be winning the national championship every year? If I could pick anywhere in the US to live (all expenses paid for 5 years) it would be Hawaii.
Because it's expensive. You are stuck there. And it's extremely difficult for family to watch you play (thousands of dollars out of pocket to attend a home game for east coast families). Plus you are talking about 17-18 yr olds making the choice with huge influence from hover parents.
Every mainlander I've talked to that has been to Hawai'i as a 'change of life' has wanted nothing more than to go home because they didn't realize the importance of freedom of movement until they were stuck on the islands.
The right kind of job changes that some, but for most people it's expensive and cramped.

I don't think Dennison could have upgraded the Zips. He is/was a DII coach with DII ideas.
Which is more of a college coach then Faust, who was a High School coach with High School ideas.
I like Faust, I went to one of his football camps when I was in high school. But don't pull out coaching level. His plan failed at Notre Dame and was very average here and prior to Notre Dame he only had Moeller as experience.

Repeating post #90...
Why limit it to, what, 16 dates a year? Is the city going to pay for that???
When for not much more, they can have an arena capable of handling hockey, indoor soccer, arena football, ice capades, circuses, monster trucks, rodeos, motocross, all of the things that Youngstown, Toledo, Wheeling, and dozens of other cities Akron's size brings in. Hell, Canton.
Maybe we get an arena football team, minor league hockey team. Indoor soccer. Minor league basketball. You won't go, so what? Well those events would only help revitalize downtown. The way the minor league baseball team has. Better restaraunts, better bars. Maybe a theater. More places to go. More money coming in to the local economy from the suburbs. More things to do before and after Zips games. wink.gif

When the JAR first opened there was no metal railing at the top of the glass wall surrounding the lower level. It wasn't until later that year or the next year that someone from the university or the city decided that the metal cap had to be installed for what ever reason. Take away the metal cap on the glass and the site lines from the upper deck are much better.
Yep, cause the metal cap will get all the people meandering about in front me out of my sight line.
As to skip (I think) that said the building isn't dilapidated, have you been in the elevators? Have you actually looked at the facility as a whole. It is a hole, i'm sorry. Our team deserved better than that, the fans deserve better than that.
It can get turned into a great training center, but it will never, ever be a great arena.
-
I hope you don't really believe all of that. You can't win without good players, no matter how much ability a coach might have in making a poor player perform better.
You can't win championships without good players. You can win games with anyone.
We aren't as bad off as you guys think we are from a talent perspective. The blowouts at the end of the season were a result of the players giving up on Ianello. That is the primary reason he was canned. Every one of those players wanted him out. What we got was the result of players quitting.

Again, a new Arena is central part of the University Park master plan. University Park Association is a conglomerate of the three hospitals (Summa, General, Children's), the City, GOJO, Advanced Elastomer, Downtown Akron Partnership, and The University of Akron.
The Arena is one of the 4 "anchor" projects to the Master Plan that has an international investment firm attached to it. The same firm that helped get funding for the Giants new baseball stadium, the Link, and several marina/aquarium projects.
However, because the University is a state institution, it cannot just greenlight projects or sign on to anything that costs millions of dollars without due dillegence studies. Current RFP for the JAR rennovation is to show how costly it would be to improve the arena to the point of meeting fan needs. This means there is no financially reasonable alternative to add luxury suites, club seats etc. to the JAR.
The JAR isn't going anyway, part of the RFP called for alternative uses to the site. Namely a volleyball arena and basketball practice facility.
It is my opinion, that there will be a downtown Arena built using the same methods as the newest dormitory. A private partner will foot the bill and lease it back to the university/city/county. This prevents a debt burden on any government agency, and ultimately allows the builder to get less costly financing because lenders know who the tenants will be.
Also you will all have to grow accustomed to an arena that can house hockey/arena football, because they will have to build something that can be used for everything to get the biggest bang for their bucks.
You can't effectively move 3000 people around in the JAR, let alone a sell out. Whoever engineered the JAR needs to be beaten and ridiculed. The reason people don't go to games there is because most people have experience with it and realize that even 2000 fans moving in and out of that gym (gym not arena) is a complete cluster F. I forgot how awful that joint was until I went to the VCU game.

I hear what you're saying, but there's only so much you can do with limited talent. Lighting a fire under a guy only does so much, if he is a poor tackler.
Like I said, I wish them luck. That's going to be a tough job to get that defense working again in the short term, without Wagner as an anchor.
Lighting a fire under poor talent is the difference between beating the Saints and Pats in consecutive weeks by large margins and never sniffing that kind of win a year later.
We don't have BCS busting talent on our roster like NIU or Toledo, but we have enough talent to help have a mediocre season next year with the coaching we have. The first thing Bowden is going to do is make sure his guys have confidence in themselves. The next thing is having confidence in each other. Then he will give them a reason to believe they can win. And hopefully proof of that belief comes within the first two weeks.

The rule for graduating/transferring/playing without sitting a year is that If one has graduated, they can transfer and not sit a year if the new school has a graduate program that the old one didn't offer.
Yeah, at least someone got my point.
It must be some specialty statistics.
I mean technically Business Statistics is different then just Statistics, but I call shenanigans.
Obviously his decision wasn't about moving to a winning program, or not playing for different coach for a third time.
Good luck in 'Zona Wags, you're a Zip to me, and you will need all the luck you can get playing at your new train wreck.
-
Interesting, article says he will study Statistics in graduate school. Akron has a Masters Degree program in Statistics.

The Can't State visitors to our site just crapped their diapers.
Cloth diapers that they didn't change from the first pants crapping announcement.

1. 3 entities want the new Arena.
The city, the university, and... who?
[edit]: Let me answer my own question. Summit County?
If this is the case, there will be three different groups of government employees who want the arena. That worries me to no end. UofA should wait until they can do it on their own.
University Park. A private group built on improving the area. But yes the county wants it also.
-
GP1,
New arena because...
1. 3 entities want the new Arena.
2. Mostly private investment
3. Display of economic recovery for a city looking for outside investment

Pretty sure we beat Marshall because we scored more points than they did.

According to coaching search
Terrell Buckley will have a position at Akron.

Just curious how old you are?
Every generation thinks the younger generation is "stupid, lazy, blasphemous, hooligans that don't know their a$$ from a whole in the ground." Some of that comes from not understanding the technology of the younger generation, some of it is from being set in your ways. Youth culture for some reason scares the older generations. Not sure at what age people start thinking that the generation beneath them is off kilter, but it always happens.
With that said, the younger generation always thinks the older generation is out of touch, know-nothings, that have ruined their chance a decent life through their actions and greed. They also think the older generation is bent on ruining their lives and their chances to have fun. Most of that is from not having life experience and fully developed brains.
Unfortunately for the older generations, they are finally right. This younger generation is a bunch of entitled, lazy, stupid, blasphemous hooligans that are going to be nothing but a nuisance to anyone. I blame the generation before me for not smacking their kids like they should have.
