  1. Considering where we all were yesterday, the hiring of Bowden is fantastic. I still would have chosen Winters because I think he would have been a longer burn. He would have been successful and would have made this his destination. He would have been another KD, while we have hired another Huggins. The best we can hope for now is three or four years of revived Zips football before Terry will jump back to the big time.

He would be "jumping back" to the big time at age 60. His age has been part of other schools hesitance. Big time programs want younger guys (Urban is going to OSU at 47) almost a full decade younger than Bowden.

I think Bowden just wanted to be at this level again and wanted to make a difference somewhere.

  2. I wonder if Gerry Faust's old connection with Bowden helped up pull this off ??

I share the sentiment that Bowden was one of the best available. Correct me if i'm wrong, didn't he spend some time with the Zips as an assistant?

Anybody that experienced the Rubber Bowl trough's has instant street cred in my book!!

    WOOT

    Go Zips!!! Ku*k Fent!!!

Yes, that's why i've mentioned it.

He was our QB coach under Faust back in about 1987

Who was our QB in 87? I was 10 forgive me for my lack of knowledge.

  3. Is this a coup for TW then?

Is it a coup to hire somebody nobody else looked at?

I'm not saying it's a bad hire, just don't think you could call it a coup.

Well you went from a nobody that no one had ever heard of to a big name successful coach that would have had a great career had he not been thrown under the bus by Auburn's Alumni.

  4. From posts on various threads, it sounds as if Loefler is a no go? But I can't find any post actually ruling him out. Are we jumping the gun in dimissing Loefler, or is there a post/thread I've overlooked?

Yes, people are jumping the gun.

It is all based off of one tweet that said "he is mulling it over along with possibly pursuing NFL coaching opportunities". Which sounded to me like a good ploy to say "eh, better come at me with more if you want me".

  5. I have a suspicion as to why we’re having a hard time get anyone to sign on the dotted line. How many 1st time D-1 head coaches would agree to a 5-year contract that has a 2-year “out” clause? This clause, hypothetically of course, stipulates that if after 2 years the school determines the program is not going in the right direction this coach may be reassigned within the University at half of his salary.

I’m certainly no expert. I'm not even a novice. But I wonder if such a performance clause is common or not. I know we’ve had some discussion on the board about this (regarding Ianello).

There is no clause about 2 years. There is statement common in all coaching contracts, that if you are deamed to not be meeting certain criteria (failure to perform) the university can move you to another position. It just so happened that Ianello failed so badly that they had to exercise this after only 2 years. Its the only way schools can protect themselves from a bad coach. All contracts have buy outs and out clauses.

If anything Loeffler is waiting to see how bad we want him (counter offer) and wheter Addazio moves on from Temple.

More re: Loeffler to Akron...per sources, he did not accept on the spot. Looking at NFL position coach options. Told he'll decide soon.

    Unbelievable TW......

You poisoned this coaching job so badly that people would literally rather do anything else but be our coach.

More re: Loeffler to Akron...per sources, he is also considering taking a job with Philadelphia waste management. He believes he would have to deal with less $#!% there than at Akron.
