Beat me to it by 15 minutes Zach
Let the jokes begin. Between Bowden and Amato, if this doesn't elevate the level of expectations, I don't know what will. Amato also likely brings recruiting ties that could help us in our last minute bid for a respectable class.
Don't expect too many non-qualifiers in this class though. As I recall Amato is very much against those types of players LOL.

Apparently Bowden's first recruit (according to a post Akron's Facebook page)
David Jones - 5'10 190lb running back
Here is his Scout profile (listed primarily as a cornerback). It must have been the head-to-head defeat of VMI that made the difference
Seriously, at least it (the VMI offer) shows the kid probably has a pretty good head on his shoulders. We probably can't be overly picky with the 2012 class, although I agree with Terry's statement regarding NOT wanting to just bring in 25 nobodies either.
well he was all conference

jealousy is a stinky cologne...
If you want to read something REALLY funny, go to the MAC general section on NCAAbbs and read the general thread on Terry Bowden. Fans of nearly every school in the MAC talk about what a home run hire it is and how it's good for the entire conference. Then some K-ent fan chimes in with some "off field" BS and is COMPLETELY ignored by the rest of the conversation.
Just proves the theory...
Most MAC fans are smart, then there's Can't.

G-mann, If the conference locked the two of us in a room and told us we couldn't come out until we had divisions set and schedule made, I am confident we wouldn't miss the basketball game tonight.
I didn't say it couldn't be done quickly. But you are assuming only 2 people have say.
You have 14 AD's and presidents that have a say. TW said they already submitted the UA proposal for the conference alignment. The whole thing will probably be announced after Bowl season.
-
The SEC threw something together. This isn't even how the conference will look in the future. It's just for this year. Why? Because they didn't have the time to really work on it. Go read the articles on it. There will be a lot of changes for next year. 14 teams is not an easy schedule to set and divisions aren't easy.
We all assume it will be BGSU moving back to the West but who knows what they are thinking. Maybe they try and balance out the conference.

Allow me to translate this quote. "Defense used to win championships and most fans still think it does so I'll break out this tired cliche in this presser. It doesn't. I would hope we would be relentless on defense, but it really won't matter because we will be scoring so many points the other team won't be able to keep up. See what Toledo did this season? I was smart enough to earn a law degree so I don't like hanging around stupid people. I won't be spending a lot of time on the defense."
I'm really looking forward to watching this team play. We are finally pulling this school into the modern world of football. Great job TB!!!!!!
I'm going to the beach. Happy New Year everyone!!!!!
We're not going to get into a big thing here, but...
We all did see what Toledo did. Blow their shot at the MAC championship because they didn't have a defense, almost lose a bowl game to a team that only runs the ball because they didn't have a defense.
Points matter, you have to score a lot. But bottom line, you don't win if you can't stop the other team.

Thriller in the Military Bowl. Final: Toledo 42, Air Force 41.
Air Force scored a TD with 52 seconds. Set up for the tying PAT and then ran a fake for 2 to win that failed. Shades of RI.
Stupid call, not giving his team (AF and Akron) a chance to win the game. Two-point conversions are probably less-than-50% successful. Why risk it with the game on the line and a chance to win in OT? Sure, it may "seem" like a bold, aggressive move...but ask those Akron and Air Force players how they felt when their coach stripped them of any chance to win in OT. Akron had a very reliable FG kicker, too, so there's an OT edge. Of course, it also means "stopping" the other team, which I-a-clueless could never achieve.
If not for the Air Force player bumbling the ball they would have been successful.
Air Force had not yet stopped Toledo, making the game even again means Toledo has two options, score, or go to OT. Taking the lead means Toledo has to score. It puts more pressure on Toledo if Air Force makes it.
Will never know why people on here are so for letting the other team control your destiny.

A new bar opened in the Merriman Valley last week called the Beer Haus. It is owned by an Akron grad Bill Bleuter. If you get a chance stop in. I think they have about 100 different beers, but are open to suggestions for additional.
They've also go Das Boot!
There is or was a Beer Haus in Canal Fulton, any idea if this is the same guy?

Screw that! We should get to see him at the press conference. Typical UA, the press conference is closed to the 17 real fans that we have. I'm sure the ass kisses on all the committees will be in attendance.
Really?
Ridiculous reaction to something that has little importance. They have two fan days and you have a problem with not being at the press conference where you couldn't do anything but sit there and look dumb.

I think IF there's a chink in Terry Bowden's armor, it COULD BE in D-1 level recruiting. Much has been written about how he lead mostly Pat Dye recruits to that splendid 11-0 season at Auburn years ago. It's also no secret that Tiger fans felt the talent level on their team was dipping in the year or so leading up to his leaving "the Plains".
At Samford and at UNA he could rely considerably on D-1 transfers. A few Lion fans have chimed in on ZNO to voice their displeasure of his reliance on them while at UNA.
So Akron is the first FBS/D1-A stop of Terry's where he will need to build (sorry GP1) the program primarily on his recruits without the benefit of having D-1 transfers coming in to play right away. I'm not saying he can't be successful. You'd think his name, coupled with the excellent facilities, should account for something on the recruiting trail. I'm merely pointing out that this represents a different challenge for him.
I think if he gets the players to come here, he'll succeed greatly. Can he get enough players to come here?
Please understand the full story at Auburn.
Terry was there 5 and 1/2 seasons: 93,94,95,96,97, and 98. By 95 Terry was playing with mostly his guys. 95, 96, 97 were all bowl seasons going 8-4, 8-4, and 10-3 losing to Peyton Manning in the SEC championship game. Each of his 5 full seasons the team finished ranked, and he won 2 of the 3 bowls the team was allowed to play in. Additionally many of the players left when the sanctions came down, meaning he had to recruit and recruit well and play his guys even earlier (so probably 94 he was playing with mostly his recruits).
What happened to Terry is that he distanced the program from the boosters. Not accidentally. He did this on purpose. He came into a very corrupt program. The boosters there were not happy with their lack of access to the program. So these boosters wanted him out and bought several key players and created scandal that ruined his career. It had nothing to do with bad recruiting, or inability to recruit. But even outside of all the conspiracy theory stuff, just look at his records and you can see that he did just fine recruiting talent to his program.

Thanks for saving me the time. I've been outside staining the deck I said, in July, I was going to stain before my family got to my house the day after Christmas.
Not a problem, I'm stuck at the office because corporate thinks we are "productive" on days surrounding a holiday.
The guy I work for is entirely too smart for that type of thinking.

Being only 6-feet tall is a huge handicap for an FBS QB, especially one named Moore.
Moore has a hard time seeing over the line, and it has obviously affected his passing and winning percentage in college.
In his last college game, the 6-foot Moore led Boise State to a 56-24 win over Arizona State in last night's Maaco Bowl to become the first FBS QB ever to win 50 games in a college career. But he also had 3 losses in that 4-year career.
Imagine how much Moore could have improved on that 50-3 record if he'd only been tall enough to see over the line.
Imagine how some Zips fans might have reacted to Kellen Moore's height had he been recruited by UA.
While true about Kellen Moore, he also came in and did outstanding things as a freshman. He clearly had Moore to work with.
Unfortunately for Akron, we've done less with Moore.

I hope he can find some JUCO guys who can play and are attracted to a big time coach.
Do we now have the biggest name coach in Ohio?
Pound for pound we do.
I would say Urban Meyer is a little bigger still.

Nice JZ84. We can all say that with confidence.

I'm all for the government designing a place(island) where druggies can go live. Let them do their drugs and make them free. Call it Zombie Island. I'd be more than happy to pay for that tax because it would do wonders decreasing crime in cities. What other answers are there?
What do you get if you legalize marijuana?
The Pros: Tax revenue.
The Cons: Drug dealers start pushing stronger drugs to make up for the loss of income from marijuana. Don't think for a second that these drug dealers are simply going to go away if you legalize marijuana.
If you legalize marijuana wish is the largest used recreational drug, 90% of the crime in Mexico and US goes away.
During Prohibition the families that continued to supply alcohol became very rich, and very violent. Once legalized those same families already had infrastructure laid out and became very successful in supplying the nation's demand. Those that didn't want to be involved sold off that infrasctructure to other people.
No one forces anyone to do a drug they don't want to do. Drug pushers? That's a myth. There aren't people on the street corner going, "hey man come here and see what I got." Why? These people aren't stupid that are selling it.
Also the majority of pot users only use pot. All of that D.A.R.E. gateway nonsense is stuff maid up to scare little kids and parents. If you legalize marijuana you create jobs, new industry, lower crime and increase tax revenue and legal wealth (which is therefore also taxable).

I am not buying the economic argument. I believe a lot of it has to do with drugs and people being unqualified to work at a lot of jobs because of their abuse. If the police department drug tested everyone they catch doing robberies/burglaries, I'm willing to bet at least 95% of them would test positive for drugs in their system.
Meth is taking over the drug world right now and it's extremely addictive. Once a high school student starts, it's hard to get them to kick it. These meth heads will let the drug tear their world down so that they can't hold jobs. I have family that work in both St. Thomas and City Hospital, meth abuse is very popular in this community.
The economy is recovering right now, I've seen a lot of companies start hiring. Unemployment is falling, Ohio's dropped to 8.5. Current holiday sales have been very strong. New-home sales jumped big in November. It's hard to be bearish on the market right now. I'm a moderate so I'm extremely irritated by the games the Republicans and Democrats are playing with each other right now. I hate politics. If you strip politics out for 2012, 2013, the UPRO could do wonders.
Ok Reefer Madness.

There are two types of winning in college football.
1. Regular winning
2. Winning in the SEC
We have just hired a guy who won 75% of his games at category #2, at a school on probation for part of the time. The league is absolutely brutal. This guy is a real winner. Do you guys know who else wins in the SEC? Nick Saban...Les Miles...Steve Spurrier. Recognize these names? We have a coach who did what these guys did/do.
I hope everyone understands what a great hire this guy is. Of the available talent on the market right now, this guy is the only one who has done it at category #2.
Not to rain on the parade I do think this is a great hire BUT comparing what Terry Bowden did In the SEC to what Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier has done and continue to due is down right dumb. Terry won two years with the previous coaches recruits. Plus the sec was no where near what is now. LSU was not bowl eligble the first three years he was there. They lost to them during one of those years. Plus this is the time when Nebraska was dominate with Tommy Frazier and Florida state was a dynasty. Tennessee won their title in 1999 Florida won in 1996 when they beat auburn. Just bottom line if your saying that the SEC was the best hands down your wrong. He won but not with his recruits like les miles. But he didn't get a ring so he's not les miles or none of the above
During the 10 year period
SEC 3 National Championships
ACC 2
Big 12 (though didn't really exist) 3
Big 10 1
Big East 1
So the SEC was one of the dominant conferences at that time.
The Big 8 had 3 one with Colorado in 1990, two with Nebraska (one of which was considered split with Penn State)
The SEC saw Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida win national titles. They would have had 4 if not for Auburn's NCAA sanctions which would take away Florida State's national title.

....
We also need to start holding judges and the justice system accountable for when they release prisoners early. If a prisoner is released early and commits another crime with victims involved. The victim, or the family (if the victim is deceased) should be able to sue the justice system for making a poor decision allowing that criminal to go free early.
Too much to repost and then write back.
Crime goes beyond police presense or technology deterents. The justice system can only do so much. They have limited space and limited tax dollars to keep people in jail for a long period of time.
The only thing that limits crime is opportunity. If you don't have jobs that pay well in a country crime rates will be higher. Just plain fact.
We are in an economic recession, people are desperate so crime goes up. Additionally crime is due to opportunity. With more vacant property there are more places to hide.
The reality of crime is that despite economically difficult times we are at lower crime rates then we have been in the past. It has heated up lately because while the unemployment percentage is dropping, unemployment as a whole isn't. The rate is calculated by those collecting benefits as those are the ones reporting it. Unemployment is high, many people are running out of unemployment benefits and something has to be done to support themselves.
Bottom line, you get rid of crime by increasing jobs.

I hope Amato does come to be our d-coordinator. Huge asset, he's from PA so he knows our recruiting area. He is creative on defense, and a fire starter. Which is exactly how Bowden described what he wants out of a DC. But the fun poking won't stop till he gets here.
If you can't beat the Zips, might as well join them Chuck.
