He is not being retained at UCLA, so why haven't we heard more on Mike Johnson????????????????
The same reason we haven't heard about anyone, they have a very tight grip on information. The only news we've gotten is the leak about Loeffler. All the Winters stuff has come straight from Detroit. Just deal, we will hear something this week.

This is the worst FBS coaching job in America. Everyone on this board should be happy if either of these guys says yes. If they say no, we are toast.
It's the worst team, its not the worst job. You don't have to fundraise for facilities. You have great connections for apparel changes. You have huge interest from big dollar donors.
What Ianello messed up on was taking the "no fundraising necessary" idea and applying it to building a fan base. His lack of connecting with people his first year here (by the second its too late) killed him while recruiting because the rumor had filtered out that he was not a people person.
That is why they already have the "meet and great" set up and you will likely see this coach tweeting more and having more fan events during the year.

Ok, based off the recent articles posted on this site we know that Winters hasn't actually interviewed with Akron yet (may not?)
So we know that today would be the first day he could interview in person. We know that Loeffler has impressed the administration. So a decision could be made tomorrow and an announcement later the same day.
However, if Winters is the hire, I would not expect an announcement on that until December 22, which would be Thursday. Why? Because as we all know, December 22 is the first day of winter.

But, if you've gotten noticed by your colleagues at the D-1A level, coordinators usually get other similar opportunities, maybe even at bigger schools, or even opportunities to move up to a HC position.
I think a lot of people noticed him which is why he won awards. There is a bid difference between getting noticed and hired. Not too many black coaches were getting hired when Winters was on the job market after the Owens era. The color of a coaches skin matters because it matter to older donors who grew up in a different time. Things are different now, but nine years ago they weren't like they are now.
I figured we'd see a response like this.
Yep, the views in this country have changed incredibly since 2004
Actually they have skip, why don't you go look at the numbers (I don't have the time).

"Hey, Jim walked into a school and shot 45 kids. But he's really a good guy...never even had so much as a speeding ticket before the shooting. One bad decision shouldn't define him."
Cap, that example is 45 bad decisions.

The Sunday thing doesn't matter, school is done so they are just trying to finish up ASAP so kids can go home

Ragin Cajuns ranked 120 at the start of the year, just pulled off a huge bowl win tonight. We can only hope for that kind of turn around.

Just saying it's a possibility.

Since we entered D1, the HC position at Akron has been a springboard to a lower division or out of coaching altogether.
I coined the phrase, "The Graveyard of Coaches" a couple of years ago. Not exactly true today, but it was then. Dennison never sniffed even a 1AA job....Faust, enough said....Ownes, Ashland. It deserved the phrase. Howevere, Brookhart and now Coach I are in D-1A programs. No longer the graveyard in my mind, but still not the best of career choices.
The funeral home of coaches? You either end up in the ground or go about your life with just a little bit of emotional distress and some time missing.

The only way he will do what you said is if the rest of the MAC quit playing football and the league just gave us the title every year by default.
We can do better than Winters' mediocrity, but we're not even trying. Its deeply saddening to me.
I really don't get where anyone can call his performance "mediocrity". Because the team stunk when he got there and it took him time to win?
Zach if this saddens you so much, don't be a fan anymore. We all want you to be happy.

A report from EA of the OD.
This summarizes a lot of what has already been cited here regarding PW's turnaround at Wayne State. It does mention a little about his ability to recruit in NE Ohio.
Interesting quote in there....
"When teams in your own league are beating you by 40, 50 and 60 points, it's a talent issue, pure and simple," -
Like I said already he already his release papers it's a little to late
That is fully likely, but "being too late" isn't something that should be in a new coaches vocabulary.
Besides the fact he doesn't need "release papers". He is a red shirt junior, that means he likely graduated or will soon. He can transfer to any school that doesn't have a graduate program that Akron offers and play for one season. No release necessary.

That is about the level of shocked I would be as well. If they wait until Monday to introduce any of the other candidates, it will have been a huge time management blunder. Everything, and I mean everything is pointed directly at Winters being hired.
I don't see it being a "time management" issue if they go in a different direction. What would the time have accomplished on a recruiting stand point? We barely have in-roads on anyone anyway.
The fact that everything is pointing towards Winters is why I doubt it will be him, it's logical, our program has been anything but logical for as long as I can remember.
I won't be upset if it is Winters, it would be a good choice. But I won't be shocked at all if it isn't.

Perhaps a better comparison would have been, does Summa hire a Dr. that runs a clinic in Moosehead to run City Hospital?
I like that analogy better than my own.
I thought the football team budget management question was related to comparing the experience of the various candidates for the UA head coaching position.
Which of the current candidates has more experience as a head coach at any level managing a team budget of any level?
A director of football operations.
That is who handles the team budget. A Head coach rarely touches that, its up to the AD and the operations personnel. He may say he wants to spend on things, but he isn't in charge of the money.

Awful lot of people assuming that Paul Winters is the one getting hired.
-
That's too easy...Do you know something I don't? I'm talking about the overall challenge of managing something dramatically larger than what someone managed previously. You don't see these things happen in the business world, but maybe athletics is different. It's just a point of discusssion. But seriously it was just a bad comparison. You look for skill sets, Wal-Mart would hire someone with management experience regardless of what level. Why? Because all the tasks there are specialized. So a mom&pop manager had to do everything, where at Wal-Mart they would only have to manage people who are doing the tasks they used to do. Perhaps a better comparison would have been, does Summa hire a Dr. that runs a clinic in Moosehead to run City Hospital? Heck nah.

Have you ever been in politics? I see you found a way to try to turn the budget issue into a positive for the candidate you support
Knowing that even the lowest level D-1A programs have to manage a budget that's well into the millions, it's a valid concern to wonder if even a high level D-II coach is capable of making such a huge leap in terms of simply managing the program. If anything, the analogy I used was an understatement. Would a Wal-Mart hire someone to run their store who was currently running a mom-and-pop corner store? It's definitely something to think about.
Yes they would, in a heartbeat. Especially if that person already had a degree. Why? Because the person already knows how to hire people and manage them. The interesting thing about places with bigger budgets, they hire people to handle counting the larger pile of beans.

Yeah, I just read the article & it sounds like GT just reads ZNO.
Couldn't he at the very least place a call to representatives for Johnson, Stoops & Winters & at least get a "no comment," comment?
That would not only require him to lift a finger, but actually use it to push something.
I imagine his article research goes something like this?
"Siri!.....How is the Akron coaching search going"
".....nothing reported in last 3 days, here is most commonly read article"
*click* copy....*click* paste
"And done!"

Well I also hit the bing (which I don't recommend to younger Zips nationals to do until they are in college) and the bing hit led me to the same conclusion.

I never realized Steven Segal was an Akron fan/alum.

Taking an overall record is the same as taking a company's balance sheet for the past 10 years. It quite possibly could equal zero or negative. That doesn't mean the company isn't performing well or making a profit for most of those years.
The guy took over a program that had seen two winning seasons in 25 years, and has lead them to 4 winning seasons in the past 7. He took a team that had never been in the D-II playoffs and coached them to the championship game, going on the road beating teams that just don't lose at home.
