Well, why would he have wanted to coach at Wayne State?
The first time? Cause it was his first HC offer and a friend offered him the job.
Now? Because its his baby, he built it, he controls it.

Another day another Tom Wistrcill botch job.
Been to Detroit in the last 5 years? Shithole to the nth degree. Akron native, former Zips player and OC would rather stay at a D-II school in the armpit of America than to come home and coach his alma mater. Any more questions?
This is the worst job in the country.
Fire Wistrcill now
If its the worst job in the country why would he want it?
Thanks for making my point for me. If a guy with love for the place doesn't want the job, who in the f does?
I didn't make your f-ing point. I'm tired of attitudes like yours. Tired of all this nonsense, tired of bs like you and zach and skip with your smarmy nonsense.
You sit there and bash Detroit like its some s-hole. They have more money in that one city then the entire state of Ohio. Then you bash the job here. Bash, bash, bash, that is all anyone does on this stupid @$$ site. You ask people to be proactive and they bash, you ask people to try and be positive, nah I would rather be negative it makes me feel better if things go bad cause then at least I can say I was right.
You contradicted yourself in your post moron. "How dare he not take this job that I think is better than Detroit but still the worst in the country?"
He has an attachment to the kids and people there, it was going to take more than a little bit more money to come here anyway. Did TW botch this whole thing, quite possibly. You can say all you want that TW is an awful person to work for. But I am tire of this f-ing bs that Akron is the worst job in the country just because that bald idiot can't hire someone.

I know I have to keep asking this, but if this guy was so great in his tenure here, then why did he end up in a D-II job in crappy Detroit?
Does it really matter, he's staying in crappy Detroit.

But, if this theory is true, would it really make the Winters supporters any happier?
Well, its a theory and not fact. They can't be angry unless it comes out that they offered Winters some insulting deal that was clearly meant to be a "well we offered" kind of deal.
-
It's funny that they got fired after a 7-5 season....today that would be worth a raise and an extension.
That 7-5 season had 2 or 3 bad D-1aa teams in there, so it was really a 4-5 season.
-
This news depends on some things.
What if Loeffler was the guy, but they threw a knowingly bad offer at Winters to appease the people asking for Winters?
At least now they can say "we offered and he insulted us by turning it down, he didn't even counter offer".
What if they were willing to go more if he had won the NC at Wayne State?
-
Just posted on footballscoop.
Akron: We hear that Wayne State head coach Paul Winters has agreed to a significant extension that will keep him at Wayne State. We have not checked with our sources today; but we have to believe this means Scot Loeffler will be the next head coach at Akron.
Loeffler doesn't make me mad, but now he knows for sure he was number 2 on the list, what's to say he doesn't turn it down?
Plus what kind of awful offer did they make to Winters?
-
Maybe I should have applied. I had the top recruiting class last year and have produced 3 Heisman Winners.
-
Figures.
They better get this one right, folks. Or heads should be rolling down Buchtel Common.
Alternatively, mobs with pitchforks and torches will be marching UP Buchtel Common. (This assumes, of course, that there's enough of us left to constitute an actual mob.)
Sounds like Jungle Hunt to me.
-
Well it should only be a matter of time for an announcement then. Way to waste our time Tommy Boy.
-
I'm not spinning anything in Johnson's favor. I am not a big supporter of his for this coaching position.
Then lay down your candidates.
-
You contradict yourself in your first sentence. Was iCoach fired for losing or more than just his losing record.
Nonetheless, if you think that there is legitimate MAC title level talent on the field here you and I simply see things differently. Talent takes time to develop and anyone who tries to cut corners will get caught in the gate.
The lack of recruiting that you mention is even more gas for my argument as no recruiting = no talent = no results.
If we find the coach that can win games on their strategy alone, without anyone to execute on the field, then we have done something altogether.
That's not a contradiction. We don't tolerate losing. But iCoach did more than just lose.
Those guys quit on him for a reason. Who knows why. But there is talent there because I've watched them play. I never said win a MAC title the first year. I did say win games and be bowl eligible by year 3, and there is no reason you can't do that. Temple has done it, UL-Lafayette has done it, FIU has done it. The right coach gets performance out of his players and can bring talent in to make a difference.

I am hoping he is given a serious look by Akron. Out of the remaining candidates, I feel like he is the best.
Yeah? You feel Johnson is the best, a guy that couldn't get it done in LA with all those resources? That Jim Mora Jr. doesn't want and didn't want, that bounced around the NFL for a long time, that hasn't been on this side of the country for a long time.
Just curious how a coordinator from a bad program is tops on your list.
Nothing against him, I think he may be someone worth looking at, he wouldn't be tops on my list, and the way at which you disqualify other guys not sure why he would be tops on yours.
Call it a gut feeling. There's just something that feels right about hiring him, and feels off about Winters.
That's fine, I would have said his extensive NFL connections and the fact he probably could bring in a lot of NFL talent to help coach, plus having west cost and Georgia connections wouldn't hurt from a recruiting standpoint.
Like I said I am neither for nor against any of the three current prospects (Loeffler, Winters, Johnson). They all have positives they all have negatives. That's why I'm not the AD :-).

To ZR44,
The firing of Ianello sends a message that we won't tolerate losing. Any coach coming in thinking they should get 4 years of "pass" doesn't belong here. The cupboard wasn't bare and he couldn't win, couldn't even coach right. Ianello got fired for more than just his losing record.
The fan base was mad, there was huge pressure to get rid of him, he was doing nothing to connect to the community, and he was barely getting any recruiting done during the year. He wouldn't meet with any donors, and had angered several players with his lack of wanting to change anything.
He was canned because he should have been. Any coach coming in is offered 5 years, even Ianello was. But every coach should be aware of the fact that regression two years in a row is failure and grounds for termination.

I'm sorry, but that's just a terrible-- as in really terrible-- take. Eight years ago, Wayne State was to Div-II football what UA is now in the FBS... the worst program in the country.
Akron has been bad for 6 seasons. If you go by current rules, we would have been bowl eligible 7 times in our D-I life time. We have been terrible for the past 2 seasons.
Wayne state had 2 winning seasons in 25 years. He took a team far worse off then Akron in a city that doesn't even identify with the school they are at, and in an economically depressed area and recruited well enough to build a winner, and then coached well enough to get a chance at a National Championship.
But for some reason that isn't a good resume.
I care who gets it, but I'm not picking a guy because several have a good resume. But I'm tired of this "D-II doesn't matter" and "his record sucked".
-
If you were PW, how excited would YOU be to take the call from a guy who--only a scant two years ago--blew you off in favor of the single worst head football coaching hire in college history? Suck on that one for a minute... Before you even step foot on campus, you know that your new boss would be a buffoon in the decision-making department.
I would feel really good because I would know I had all the power at that point. I'm being called by this buffoon because someone is telling him to call me, not because he chose to call me. I know he is just a figure head for the process.
-
So, let me see if I understand this correctly. You wholeheartedly seem to support a guy who has been stuck in D-II for a number of years and was a big part of a staff who failed here once before, but you have questions about a guy who has earned enough respect from his peers at the upper echelon of both college and pro football that he's been hired for many, many coaching positions in both D-1A and the NFL over the years?
I have concerns about all the options because they are a unknown. If there was a way to predict success then all 120 schools would constantly have winners.
I like how you spin things to make one look better than the other. Michael Johnson's whole career is based on the fact that he got to work with Vick for a short period of time.
You say "he's been hired for many, many coaching positions" I say he can't hold a job (6 different teams in 12 years).
You say "stuck in D-II for a number of years" I say being a head coach doing exactly what we want a coach to do.
Every one of these guys has pros and cons. I have yet to see a detailed list of that for the known possibilities.
Personally I like that Johnson has a lot of NFL and college experience, but show me how his accomplishments stack up to Winters or Loeffler.
I haven't thrown my hat in completely for Winters, at the time the options were extremely limited and he was the best possible hire.
I don't know who I like, but I will question people on why they like certain things and dismiss others.

Two comments on posts above:
1) Give the new guy a "six-year deal minimum" ???? ARE YOU NUTS?! Hopefully UA learned its lesson with the 5-year deal it awarded to a first-time loser.
2) Please stop using the "we fired a coach after only two years" as a negative point to boost your argument. Firing Ianello after two years was the ONLY positive thing TW has done at UA. Sheesh. What, did you want him to STAY or something?? Some mornings, the level of stupidity really takes off...

No doubt, I want wins, too. But the Wistrcill/Ianello Team brought about such regression, just basic "competing" will be a huge step forward. Tragic as it is.
Something blew up in the program during the Miami game. I have no idea what, but the whole attitude around the team changed the week following CMU.
But you could tell there was a loss of faith in the coaching from the players. Maybe GP1 is right and the whole lot of them should be giving walking orders, but the right coach can come in here and get wins right away. I'm not saying championships (we don't have that kind of talent on the team just yet) but no reason these guys cant win 6 games considering the conference we play in.

G-mann, despite the positives you mention, the Akron job is indeed the worst job in FBS. The proof of this is that no coach wants to touch the job with a 39 and a half foot pole. The good aspects of the job don't outweigh working for an AD that has exhibited complete incompetence with the football program.
Hopefully PW will take the job in spite of its grim reality.
Your perception of interest from other coaches is mostly based on what rumors we have heard. Narduzzi backing off is more likely due to Akron saying "hey we are looking at a lower pay scale then what you are wanting, so go ahead and pull yourself out".
There has been a lot of interest, most of you seem to dream too big. I don't know what coaches you were expecting to come here.
The interest is there, the price range for the work required is probably too low for some these coaches.

Regardless of WINS at this point, I think UA fans are looking for a coach and team that can simply "compete" on Saturdays, and pull off the occasional upset. What TW's protoge, Ianello, brought us was two full years of embarrassing, boring, non-competitive blowouts. Between the Zips on Saturday and the Browns on Sunday, we've wasted more time suffering through ridiculously-unwatchable football than should be permitted by law.
No, we are looking for a team that wins. I want a team that odds are they are going to win on Saturday. I think anyone that wants less than that should have been mad that Brookhart got fired. "Compete" isn't what we are looking for, "compete" means we are happy with a 3 point loss. No, I for one want to WIN!!!!

If you are making a profit with zero or negative assets, you are doing one hell of a job, but odds are the IRS (or some other authority) is keeping an eye on you.
Oh Meister...
If you see a Million dollar loss in year one (as expected in most new or rebuilding businesses) and see profit of a one hundred thousand each of the next 9, you are still 100 grand in the hole. Ask Ford about my example, or Apple.
