So any way that the mods can hold these people accountable? If we win by 15 or more no negativity from Saturday evening through to Wednesday morning. Wednesday morning let the negativity fly.Like I said, if we lose I will be scheduling an appointment with TW to call for Ianello's head. And I will send the time of that appointment and location so that anyone who truly cares about the team can join me.
-
Now I'm not saying negative people don't have a right. You all do, and I respect what you have been saying. But with that said, how many points do we need to win by against VMI for you guys to give Doug and I a reprieve of you nonsensical "Burn it down, pave it, fire the coach, AD, and everyone else that less this happen" rhetoric till just Wednesday of the following week.Trust me if we lose, I will be marching into the JAR, right down to Wistrcill's office and demanding Ianello's head that very moment and a refund for the past 2 seasons. This game is the game to show us that we are better than last year and that you fixed something.

I don't think Grice had any playing time. You can ask any Temple fan. Five years ago they were doing exactly what we are doing, playing a lot of young guys. Why? Because they are the ones that buy the coaches system, you develop them for 3 years and you have a core of Seniors and Juniors that can play the game and then you start red shirting guys so they get the extra development year. Unfortunately we are what we are. Young and inexperienced.

I don't know where you get there was an expansion of any services at any state university that hasn't been funded by student fee. As to you point, most of those "suits" were grad assistants which what most "bureaucratic" waste is on a university campus. As to your second question students paid for it 30 years ago students pay for it today, but the problem is that funding has diminished. And why has that funding diminished? Its because of what went on in the 60's and 70's on college campuses. Conservatives were able to use the hippie movement as grounds to continuously decrease funding for education. Don't want to "indoctrinate the students" with "public money". A major part of this funding change was Reagan. It had nothing to with fiscal conservatism.I am quite curious though, and this goes across the board, how so many anti-government individuals love to attend government run universities.

Ooh, I'd bet theyd both fare better than that. Especially Temple. Temple is tough! I'm betting they give Penn State all they can handle this weekend. Toledo, however? Well, I'm expecting them to get blown out by Boise. I think Boise is that good.Temple will be 2-3 at the end of this three game stretch. And I don't see the Penn State game being close. Toledo I think actually plays a tough game against Boise. I hear Toledo painted the whole field yellow and will wear yellow jerseys and pants for the game to give Boise a taste of their own medicine.

Why exactly? This is good scheduling for the program and good for the fans. Marshall at home, Pitt at home. That creates great interest. UCF to open up with next year? Yes the team needs to play better, but these are teams fans know and are familiar with. Who cares when and who schedules it?

BTW who ever threw up the picture of Leach. I believe that we could have had him if we had just waited until January of that year to hire our head coach. The irony of all this, if Ianello finds a way to win 5 games this year many of us will be excited about next year (especially since we know we are young, and those wins will come near the end of the year showcasing "vast improvement").Wins heal all wounds.

I believe in altruism. But I don't believe Tressel's motives were altruistic. Then you are even more optimistic then I.

There are 4 million people in NEO. The number state universities and their student populations are similar to areas of similar size. There are roughly 100 thousand students attending the four 4 year schools. So 2.5% of the population. The system doesn't need overhauled. However the schools that are best at running schools cheaply and creating synergy should run the branch campuses. So with that said, Stark State should run the whole Stark campus. Can't should give up some of their branches to YSU and Akron.
-
I want us to stoop to some level to win. Staying at the high moral level we have been at hasn't really helped out much. The spin on the Tressel thing to people who aren't 100% OSU haters is that he did what he did to protect the kids. As a parent I admire that. They didn't traffic drugs or kill, rape, or beat anyone so he tried to get these guys through their senior years and on their way. He knew he would eventually take heat but the idea was to get these guys through school. No behavior is altruistic (he wanted them on the team so he could win) but he was also looking out for them after they made a mistake. Now I'm not for pitching Ianello just yet. But if the only two options are get Tressel this year or never get Tressel, then I say go after him. Ideally he's out of D-1 coaching for this season and next and then after next year we know if Ianello is progressing quickly enough and poof hire Tressel.

1. The delay gave my wife plenty of time to schmooz with her boss.2. We were able to use "getting the 2 yr old to bed" as a convenient excuse to duck out after half time.3. Jawon Chisholm broke one of those big runs we have all been talking about.4. Suel looked like a good receiver.5. Great new "This is Akron" video to start the game.
-
Well penalites killed most of our offensive drives. We get a 41 yard carry from Chisholm then the very next play a 15 yard penalty from a chop block. That will kill teams all the time and is the result of the young team we have (outside of the linemen).

Well, my guess is with basketball they have something to work with (wins) so now they need the personality to along with it to get students out. I mean you get the student crowd that showed up for the football game to the basketball games (4000 + contrary to most reports) you have standing room only. With the others its about building support so that they can get additional funding to improve. They see how soccer did it and are trying to emilate it. Football, I think they just assume people will show. Or worse yet, they assume people won't show until they are winning (mostly true) so why expose students and coaches to extra abuse. We're tied 0-0 had held Temple twice before the delay and Ianello elects to punt from the 50 and people are screaming profanity and chanting "We want Tressel". Difficult to get someone to want to meet those kinds of fans.
-
Yeah he is much better than Mack was at responding to people. And open to meeting with people. They actually beg for that kind of involvement. They want to know what people think, what they want from the program (not just wins, but community involvement from the teams, event activies, scheduling etc.) The UCF game happened because they had a number of people mention how they used to be a big rival with us when they were in the MAC.
-
He is an Akron Alumnus and wrote the foreward for the only Akron Football History book that I know exists. (Which many of you were very angry about)
-
Zach, send this comment to Wistrcill. Seriously. It is very honest and factual. The AD would like to hear this and it is solid student opinion. If he doesn't give you a response then let me know and I will submit too.

You know what I find bizarre? The fact that donations to the university are increasing to record highs, yet tuition is still generally increasing overtime. Which would be fine, but at the same time the University continues to add new bus routes, buildings, degrees, etc.Why cry that you're broke, while you continue to spend, spend, spend? It's become obvious that something isn't right with the current structure of our higher education system; not just at Akron, but across the state and the nation.Because every year the money that the state gives to the universities dimishes. The operating budge for the university is $275 million. The state's share of that has been continuously decreasing each year and the additional $10 billion that the state had to split amongst all universities last year is now gone (stimulus funds).Meanwhile professors expect raises, repairs have to be done, new supplies must be purchased, and utility rates go up. I mean it is pretty obvious. Besides donations go beyond the operating budget to add to the campus. The cost of a college education, when adjusted for inflation, has remained relatively flat. The problem is that the burden of that cost has been pushed to the student. In the 60's roughly 70% of the cost of college was payed by the government. Today students are paying 70% of the cost and the government is paying 30%. The bottom line is so many politicians would rather preach about education then actually fund it.

Ianello Press conference from OSU

Tim got a raw deal . So I think most of us are in the 4 wins camp. Ideally 4 MAC wins and a VMI win (5) but 4 is showing capability. -

Golden was 9-4 in his 3rd year in the MAC. Temple was an Independent in 2006. So my original criteria stands.Golden also won 4 games in his 1st MAC year, after that 1-11 inaugural season. That's what I expect of Ianello. At minimum. Good discussion.Fair enough. But Golden was 1-5 against the MAC in that Independent season. So I would say since 50% of the schedule was in the MAC we go ahead and call that a MAC season. -
Sadly only a very modest 1.8% increase. It was mentioned briefly in a Beacon article. Not sure why it was such a minor increase. I assume it was an anomally considering we have seen an average 5% every year.

CK,You said "A good coach can turn a bad MAC program into a +.500 program in 3 seasons, maximum.". It took Golden 4 years to be .500 or better. So yes, the insinuation is that anyone who takes longer than 3 seasons is not a good coach. Therefore, you are saying in no uncertain terms Golden wasn't a good coach. And is a matter of Brookhart vs. Ianello. In so many ways. Brookhart's philosophy was win now at all costs. The problem with that approach is that when the coach leaves he didn't set up any way for the team to succeed after him. I'm not saying the TW Icoach plan will work, I am pointing out the merits of the ideology. I use Temple as an example because it was successful. I can point to many schools who have tried the same thing and failed. With that in consideration. We won't know if this plan has failed until the middle of next season. I too expect 4 wins this year. Minimum. Like GP1 says, its the MAC no one team is that far from any of the others. The Winning does have to start, but if we end up with only 3 wins and 7-8 close contests (7 points or less) then that is a vast improvement over last year and can be chalked up to the inexperience of the players. If we have a bunch of blowouts against MAC schools, there is something philisophically wrong. -

Dr Z. All we have is hope. Its much better going into each weekend with the idea that we can win and things are improving, then waiting for failure. Does it hurt to lose? Yes. But I will take the one moment of despair after the loss, until I can get my beer and forget about it, over Zach's constant dismay every time he sees an I or the letters ello. -

I really don't see that as the only options. You look at the Mike Haywood case, that is an isolated incident in college football. Most teams want a coach with a proven track record. And the way Pitt got burned on that deal, I think teams will be wary of these flash in the pan coaches. -

So Golden wasn't a good coach? The problem is Brookhart left the program in shambles. I don't get why none of you realize that. He didn't give the team over with the depth it had in 2004-2005. He turned it over with the worst depth in a decade. Like I said after the failed 2006 season Brookhart had no plans. His idea of taking high risk athletes with 0 support systems failed on him, and he was lost. That is why the team played progressively worse the next 3 seasons. The problem was that nobody in the administration was willing to get rid of him soon enough. Likely due to the fact that they feared instability in the program would end up ruining the chances of getting the stadium done. The only thing that turns you into EMU or K.e.n.t. is lack of University support for the program. Our board and president obviously care a great deal about football still. And what if it doesn't? Fire him, and let another guy come in and "rebuild". Even if we hire your "great coach" you still waiting the same length of time. We should know by the end of the season if this extremely young team is making the improvements necessary to compete. If so we can look forward to competing for .500 football next year and MAC Championship contention in year 4. If Ianello is doing the right things everything after year 4 should be constant championship contention, whether he leaves or stays (like NIU, Temple, CMU).
