  1. According to footballscoop.com the Zips have removed the Strength Coach Dan Bailey and Director of Football Operations Darryl Weston. This tells me they are close to hiring a coach. He must be bringing these positions with him.
As of Sunday, Bailey was still employed by UA, that I know for a fact. His job is more than just the strength coach for the football team. Interesting rumor.
  2. As the JDB era has come to a close, I have noticed several posters who repeatedly insist that this is a talented group. Some believe that this group of players is talented enough to win right away with the right coaching. While I'm not a talent evaluator, like most of us, I'm a little more skeptical that we have that much talent on the roster. So, I'd like to see a discussion with some specifics about where this group is talented and where we have needs. I'll start by taking away the obvious ones, the guys who have received strong praise here all year, Wagner and Nicely. Wagner is a ball hawk and appears to be in on every play. It's almost as if by magic to see how often he's in the scrum. Nicely looks pretty good too, especially for a true freshman who JD clearly wanted NOT to see the field this year. Now, where are the rest of the talented players we expect to spark UA's resurgence next year? Until I see some discussion of the talent on this roster, generic assertions that this is a very talented roster mean nothing to me.
All of them. The overall athletic talent on this team is good enough to win in this sorry league if it wasn't for the mismanagement of the coach. The problem is the talent was used in the wrong way because JD's strategies were destined for failure. Using different schemes will bring out the talent in the team. It happens frequently. A good swift kick in the ass from the new coach will do wonders for the kids as well. When Owens was fired, my biggest concern was the lack of talent on the team (Owens would have had one more 6-5 year under his belt and then the wheels would have fallen off). JD had to come in and clean house. Most were so bad they couldn't even make Ashland win their conference after transferring there. The new guy won't have to do that. JD left enough talent behind to win in the MAC....the next guy needs to win sooner rather than later.
I hope you're right. It makes me wonder why JD did better with LO guys than his own?
Biggs, Alleman, Kemme, Getsy and pulling Hixon from defense to offense. Four of those five were JD's guys. Hixon my as well have been since JD saved his career. The myth is JD won with LO's guys. The reality is his guys took the Zips from a second place team to MAC Champions. One other thing everyone seems to forget is JD lost some key assistant coaches in the first couple of years. Arron Alford is doing well at Utah and the LB coach is doing well at Air Force. I think these guys were key losses to the program.
I agree that those guys were "His Guys", but why wasn't he able to attract anymore of those types of players after that initial wave?
  3. Why doesn't Akron play Y-town State on the regular. Penguin fans travel in force and would probably fill the Info with increased community interest.
I think the only way they would play us is if we would agree to a home and home series. We would have nothing to gain by playing in Y-town.
  4. It looked like someone stepping up to be a leader on this team to me. Humpty was pissed at Roberts for not paying attention and letting a pass in the final seconds go out of bounds. The Zips need some passion and if our seniors won't provide it, I'm glad Humpty will. UAPB played alot of smaller lineups, so that forced KD to do the same and thats why I think Zeke didn't play. The other thing that was interesting, was our use of a zone defense for quite a bit of the game. A win is a win. :)

  5. Does anyone know any info on this. I over heard some alumni talking about it in the Tommy Evans Lounge. Is it going to be called Hipsher Hall, just what was being said. For all Dan did for the program. Any info would be appreciated.
Thats what I heard also. Here is a copy of the blueprints.:chair:
  6. I popped into Memorial Hall on the day of the home opener for football. Its even smaller and crappier than I remember. By comparison, the JAR looks like the Q. Other than for a few of us old guys curiosity, I see no reason why we would ever play another game there ever! Its destined for the wrecking ball soon and I will not miss it at all.

  7. That's probably the worst game I've ever seen in person, and I've been following Zips football religiously for about 16 years now.
That was embarrassing! That has to rank in my top five worst losses and this is year # 40 for me. Around 200 games and this one is right up there. :puke:
  8. I second the comments about Swiech and also i feel that the "well deserved" Zeke attention made us overlook another newcomer in Sullivan.Alex showed me a lot of great positive things. If it wasn't for Zeke's debut, i know he hould have received a lot more attention but oh well.
I thought Sullivan looked promising also. He looks to be a great athlete with a lot of leaping ability. Don't get me wrong about Swiech though, I do like the guy. Its just that KD isn't going to play someone who is a liability on defense. Bardo may not contribute much on offense, but he is a good defender and thats why he gets playing time. I wish there was a way you could combine Bardo And Swiech into one player!
  9. I hate to say it, but watching Sweich, I really think he would be a lot more helpful in Mt. Union Purple and Black than he's ever going to be in Akron Blue and Gold. Had some decent minutes in garbage time. He can rebound. Thats for sure. But he's still too foul prone to really make an impact for this team.
Steve is not a D-1 player. Last night really showed that he just doesn't have what it takes. He got beat by his man over and over under the basket for lay-ups. If he gets any meaningful minutes this season it will take a miracle. Its obvious that his teammates really like him, because they did everything they could to get him the ball on offense, but he is totally lost on defense. If the Zips played alot of Zone, he might have a chance. :champs:
  10. So, I'm watching the Zips in downtown Charlotte today at Wild Wings. A server comes out of the door and stops dead in his tracks to see the the Zips and Golden Douchebags are playing on TV. He says to a patron, "I graduated from Can't State". The guy that is GP1 hears it and yells out, "With a degree from Can't State, the best you will ever do is serving beers at a bar."I hate Can't State.
Like you, I really don't want to know what he did to the rest of the stuff you were served. :puke:
He wasn't serving my table. Good thing too, because the Great GP1 would have had him shine his shoes before he left......."Hey Can't grad....Go get your shine box."
Right..... you have never worked in a restaurant, have you? It gives me the willies just thinking about the stuff you chewed and swallowed.
Thats just what I was thinking! I used to own a restaurant, and you are asking for it if you piss off a server or cook for no reason. The Great GP1 would be advised to remember he can't see what goes on in the kitchen!:lol:
  11. End of discussion.
    Everyone's holding their breath .....
Everytime I read one of Jakes posts, this just keeps popping into my head.
