  1. Ah, but Cap'n, are you completely confident that Proenza is going to give Wistrcill any of the leeway that you infer? STZ
The whole "Elevate Walt Harris to Head Coach next week" thing is absurd. So our new AD...he's been here all of 3 weeks...is going to fire a coach who began the season 1-3, with games against 2 Big Ten teams and the #1 team in the MAC? No f-ing chance.Ok...say he does fire JD after a 1-3 start to the season. He goes up to Walt Harris and says:"Hey...I just fired your friend...the guy that gave you a chance to get back into football when no one else really would...now I need someone to replace him. I think you'd do a great job. Would you like to coach the Akron Zips?"I could see Harris' reaction being -- "You fired my friend after you've known him for three weeks?! And now you want me to replace him? What happens to me if I go 1-3 in my next four games? Are you insane? Do you think I don't have a soul? Look...I'm still pulling in $800,000 this year from Stanford. I don't need the money, and I CERTAINLY don't need the aggravation?! Keep it."Unless he quits, JD is here for the remainder of the year. The chances of him getting fired range somewhere between Blutarski's GPA and Jacquemain's chances of a mid-season nomination for Team Captain. The schedule gets ridiculously easier over the next several weeks. He has every opportunity to win 6 more games and keep his job. I think he has the talent on the field to do it. It is up to him to come up with the game plans and adjustments to do it. He needs to change his motto from "3 More Feet" to "Six More Wins." That's what he really needs.
That would be the same Proenza that just gave the CFO of the university a year off with pay in order to deal with a drinking problem.
  2. Neither QB will be successful if we don't get better o-line play and improved play-calling. Putting our QB in 2nd-and-9 situations every series will be the death of any QB. If JD's play-calling doesn't start getting us in a position to move the chains, if he keeps running up the middle on 1st down, Nicely will be as ineffective as Rogers was on Saturday.Jacquemain is done. D-O-N-E done.
CK, I'm glad to know that you can see the real problem with the offense. The O-line play is horrible. Until we can run the ball and have some succes at the line of scrimage, it doesn't matter who the QB is.
  3. It looks like the NCAA is not too thrilled with Martins outburst.NCAA Slaps down Martin

But the NCAA was not happy with his words."Coach Martin's comments are irresponsible and uninformed," Bob Williams of the NCAA said. "Division I institutions apply for hardship waivers for student-athletes through their conference offices. If a hardship waiver is granted, an institution could then seek an extension of the five-year period of eligibility from the NCAA. Each of those requests is carefully reviewed based on the specific circumstances of the situation and with the student-athlete's best interests in mind."
  4. Sure hope that photo doesn't end a promising young political career before it got started.
If a politician is a Republican, they get a pass from their own party on things like cheating on a wife or soliciting sex in an airport bathroom. I don't think a beer bong will hurt his career.Rasor has all he needs to be a successful politician in northern Summit County suburbs. First, I believe he goes to The Chapel. The Chapel, like many new Christian churches, is as much cult-like social club as it is a place of worship. It falls right into the Republican's playbook of "us vs. them". "Us" means those that believe what we do and belong to our little group. "Them" means....well, I'm not certain they even know what it means. These churches also serve as recruiting tools for the modern day Republican party which has become more liberal than FDR with guys like Bush 43 and follows the intellectual lead of lightweights like Sean Hannity and neo-conservatives (code word for big government liberals). There was once a time when great thinkers of small government like William F. Buckley were the intellectual leaders of the Republican party (Buckley would have vomited out his bong water on neo-conservatives). Now, high school graduates and Sunday Christians have taken over that role. I honestly don't believe many modern day Republicans believe the childishly legalistic theology they are forced to spew for political purposes, which makes the party thoughtless and pandering to the most intellectually vacant, shrill masses. In a lot of ways, it makes them dangerous. The Republican Party has turned itself into a cartoon of itself. Like a lot of good cartoons, it is both funny and uncomfortable to watch......like South Park.Secondly, he writes about sports in an area where people love sports.I think this politician is a good guy. I hope he doesn't use his chance in politics to force others to behave and act as he may believe they should based upon his religious beliefs. Instead, he should think about freedom and what that means. Freedom is for everyone all the time. Not just when it is word that helps someone get elected.Let freedom ring!Go Zips!
Thanks for showing us all what a bigot you are GP1. I'm sure you have some twisted rational for your opinions, but this is a sports message board. I for one, would appreciate it if you would take your convoluted wisdom to some other teams fan site. Perhaps one of those vaunted SEC or ACC teams you talk of here on the Zips message board so often. The fine folks at the Chapel will continue to contribute and invest their time, energy and money to make the Akron community a better place. People like you who think its ok to fire some cheap shots while hiding behind a computer screen are not needed as the only thing you contribute, is a sad twisted life view. Perhaps you should not post to this message board if you have to put someone else down in order to get your jollys. You now have the honor of being the first member on my ignore list.
  5. It looked like Bruce left the game with a shoulder or collarbone injury after his last punt return. He is one brave guy. It was nice to see Devon Torrence get some carries, but it appears he was injured also. He was on the sidelines on crutches and had an ice bag taped to his right hip. Hip pointer?

  6. They changed the time of my sons youth football game to Saturday afternoon instead of in the morning, so I now have 2 extra tickets. These are in section 210, row 2 right on the 50 yard line. If you want them, send me a PM and I will make arrangements to meet you at the Info on Saturday. They cost $25 each. The only downside is you have to sit with our fellow poster, Dave from Green! :P

  7. The Raiders cut Jeff Garcia and kept Charlie Frye and Gradkowski.http://www.insidebayarea.com/raiders/ci_13274830

Garcia said all the right things upon his signing. However, it soon became apparent that he had other intentions, namely starting. He rarely was seen talking to Russell at practice or in the locker room and he showed no overt signs of passing on any of the things he learned in his first 10 years in the NFL.Cable said the solid play of Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski also factored into the decision. He will decide upon a No. 2 in the coming days, he said.
  8. * On the new arena -- It is projected to be across the street from Canal Park. With the money that the University has sunk into the football stadium, it needs the partnership of the city to finance the project. On-campus is just not feasible. That said, that corner of Main and Exchange is essentially on-campus anyhow...it isn't like it is in Ellet.
OMG, Wait till Jake sees this thread!
  9. I think you guys all have it wrong. The reason for the wristbands is to prevent students from selling their ticket. These first few games are going to be sellouts and I'm sure that someone didn't like the idea of students scalping tickets outside the stadium on opening day.

  10. Landscaping going on behind scoreboard. Temporary parking lot on Exchange and Spicer is being lined and awaiting light poles to complete. I believe the work on the bomb shelter is to install ice shields to prevent injury when ice and snow slide off the roof. It's typically used on metal and slate roofs.
Maybe state of the art deicing equipment to prevent the problem. Either way it will enhance my game day experience. Without these two stairwell covers I believe the cost of the stadium would have come in at about $6 million.
I've been inside those bomb shelters and its pretty nice in there! I wouldn't mind doing some laundry on gameday, the view is great. The soccer locker room is first class and the gameday football locker room is just right. I can't wait for Sept. 12. :D
  11. Charlie played a decent game, going 7 for 12 for 80 yards and a TD. I hope he beats out Gradkowski for the spot on the roster.
Gradkowski out played him in NFL terms. Gradkowski and Frye both had a TD. Gradkowski had 18 yards/completion vs. Frye's 11.5. One of the most important statistics in the NFL is yards per attempt. Gradkowski had 10 yards/attempt vs. Frye's 6.6 yards/attempt.Completing passes down field is how you win in the NFL. Unless Frye turns this around, he will be on the outside looking in.
Maybe, I think Frye still has the upper hand. If you thought Fryes arm was weak, it looks like a cannon next to Gradkowskis'.http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2009...wrap/#more-5898
    – Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye were relatively even in terms of stats, but there were a couple of short throws on sideline passes which will be a staple of the Raiders offense that Gradkowski has trouble throwing. On one play, he came up short to Louis Murphy, who picked it off the grass for a catch, only to have it correctly overturned by replay. It’s worth noting that throw is not a strength of Jeff Garcia, either.Charlie Frye showed a good awareness in the pocket of surrounding defenders and was able to get off completions.

No. 7: Gradkowski vs. Charlie Frye is too close to call. Gradkowski was 9-of-16 for 161 yards and a touchdown, Frye 7-of-12 for 80 yards and a touchdown. Gradkowski came up short on a couple of sideline throws and arm strength could give Frye the edge.
