  1. DALLAS -- Former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton says his competitive nature led him into the drug business.

"I've always been competitive, I've always been in sports," said Newton, a six-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman who retired after the 2000 season. "I couldn't see myself not being the biggest dope man."

  2. Why yes, he does, and considering I've been working since 8:30 this a.m., I may get a little tired and fingers may move faster than I'm thinking right now. Again, thanks for your concern.

In the interest of full disclosure, let it be know that jupitertoo is a OU supporter. Not a Zips fan.

For many years we could only dream of an ABJ reporter feeding relevant, real-time info to the fan base. Zips fans appreciate your work unconditionally.

  3. OK, his twitter account seems to indicate that he has reported to camp. If I understand the situation correctly, he hasn't played since 2011. I assume that would mke him eligible right away for the Zips? Do you have confimation of this? Surely you must have confirmation, otherwise you wouldn't have told the JMU message boards that he is ;)

I'll say this. If Capi plays for the Zips in 2013, we will have the best UA defense since the 2005 MAC championship team, by far.

The pic of him in the Zips locker room, wearing a Zips helmet, is enough for me to believe he's on the team.

Since he didn't play last season, he's eligible this season (I think I recall Bowden saying Capi would be eligible for 2013 when he spoke to us at the Golf Outing).

If I were in Vegas I'd drop 50 bucks on the Zips to win the MAC this year. It's the MAC...and the Zips are a completely new, seemingly much more talented team in 2013. That's good enough for me to try 75:1.

  4. My son played baseball in Akron the other day, and we stopped by the Rubber Bowl afterwards. The field actually looks pretty nice. The flora and occasional fauna busting through old fiberglass stands might make "The Shrubber Bowl" a more appropriate name in a few more years.

Lots of great memories made along that airport fence...

  5. This "Dennis offer" was a big topic of discussion around the fire on Saturday night. The word that is spreading in my area is that Bill Dennis did in fact call in a favor. He is friends with one of the coaches on Akron's staff and the offer has 1 big stipulation. The kid can't accept it. Ha. What I'm hearing is that they offered him as a favor to try and generate some interest from other schools.

I've followed college football for quite a while. I've never heard of such a thing.

  6. Will Fleming transferring to Towson University. No confirmation yet.

Did the NCAA make a ruling that 8th-year players with 3 degrees can transfer to a 1-AA program without penalty if they've played less than 6 games in their career?

  7. If you were a business person, could you entertain a client at the JAR?

Our premier JAR entertainment facility is the Tommy Evans Lounge. A few years ago I won a TEL pass at the basketball golf outing. I went there for a noon tip-off game.

Before the game they had a breakfast bar. Nasty-looking stuff. At halftime I went back in, and the same breakfast food was sitting in the bins...just more nasty and dried-up (this happens after food's been sitting at room temp for 4 hours). A few octogenarians seemed to enjoy it, but that was about it.

The soda dispensers ran out of syrup and the lines to get a Pepsi were about 50-deep. They did have some ice cream sundaes laid out on a table, but the table was directly in front of the long front window, so it all melted. There were also about 200 people packed into that room...you could barely move.

I think that experience would be better if there was a new venue. Maybe. Just maybe.

  8. Why is there the assumption that, if you build a nicer, larger arena, that is must sell out every game?

Big deal if Akron vs. Bethune-Cookman only draws 3,679 at the new arena. Those 3,679 will be spending three times as much money as the 2,783 that would watch the same game at the JAR. And not suffer from Bleacher Butt.

  9. I can confirm that Arlington McClinton has left the football team.

I hear he's starting a rock band with Ryan Bain and "Butter" Smith: The Neverwuzzes

    Hit singles include:

    "I almost played"..."What Campus?"..."Redshirt Schmedshirt"...and everyone's favorite..."InfoCision Circumcision"

    Good luck to them.
