Hey... a wire-to-wire win against a quality opponent, and no leg crap! Hell...the women were down 9 in the 2nd half and pulled out a win?! Is the the dawning of a new era?Seriously - congrats to both men's and women's teams. A great Wednesday night.

Guess that means he'll never see the court in the 2nd half?

Brookhart-era WR still on the radar
Captain Kangaroo replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
It is interesting to me the different philosophies of the Brookhart and Ianello staffs regarding retention of the previous coach's recruits. When Brookhart arrived, very few kids committed to Owens were given a red carpet to stay. He basically tried to create his "own" class from contacts he'd made while at Pitt. Guys like Gary Frisbee were pretty much shown the door.Ianello seems to be hell-bent on keeping most of the kids on JD's recruiting radar? It would seem that Ianello's approach is better - he needs to get a full class, and that's tough to do on short-notice, while you're moving your family and building a staff, while also recruiting with signing day roughly 2 months away (when he was hired). I think it also speaks well for the grad assistants who kept in contact with the incumbent recruits.Maybe it speaks well for the quality of recruits JD had lined up for 2010? Time will tell.To be fair, when JD was hired there weren't nearly as many commitments. And Owens was recruiting with no stadium or field house to show off....so the recruit caliber had to be lower.Just interesting...two totally different approaches to the early part of Year #1. -
I don't think Dambrot likes playing his friends. He's good buds with the Wright State coach, and mentioned he would not play them during the regular season for that reason.

It's actually been around for some time now but does not get the run that some of their spots do. Now that the Vikes are done it will probably go back to the vault. As long as you dropped by, whats the status of Devo and Kinney vs. NIU ??? Need to know for recreational purposes of course.I had wondered where the Vikings Curse began. Now I understand Favre's late-game interception (channeling Chris Jacquemain...channeling Chris Jacquemain...), and Peterson's fumbles.

Director of football operations?
Captain Kangaroo replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
Here's an alternate secretary for you (cover your eyes when scrolling past Svetlana) -"So you have a 1:45pm appointment with Mr. Ianello? Isn't that special?" -
Just curious - In the last 5 years, how many prep school kids has Ohio State accepted? I'll guess zero, but I don't follow OSU closely.

I agree. I don't see the Barney connection at all. -

THAT is why we need to play more road OOC games
Captain Kangaroo replied to Quickzips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
It's an interesting question. Hipsher ran the "Motion Offense," Phil Jackson runs the "Triangle." I think in the 2nd half of too many games, the Zips run the "Prevent Offense." -
Recruiting updates from me will be sparse. There's a whole new group of coaches...and I have no way to meet them until signing day. Or maybe the summer golf outing.Sucks. This used to be my favorite time of year.A 3 star running back that is committed to NIU visited Akron this weekend and could very well switch his commitment to the Zips. His last name is Bowers.Does it bother any one else that a Toledo fan keeps up better with our potential recruits than we can now? If you want to know what he knows, simply pay for a scout.com subscription.I also believe rocketfootball follows MAC recruiting as a job, not a hobby. Correct me if I am wrong. He also obviously follows Toledo football very closely, and has a good knowledge of the players of which UA and Toledo have a mutual interest.

What do Zips Fans Really think?
Captain Kangaroo replied to MDZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I hate this question because it is very divisive. It pits "Zips Football Guy" vs. "Zips Basketball Guy" vs. "Zips Soccer Guy"You can't win at UA if you're a fan of all three. -
Eerily similar to "Fear the Roo!?" RIP Irwin.

Save the drama for your mamma. What was the Zips record after 17 games last season, with the great Nate Linhart bravely leading the way? Desire and leadership coarsing through his veins...the stuff legends were made of....(see, I can be dramatic too)...I'll tell you - it was 9-8. Focus on the facts - The Zips crapped down their leg plenty of times last season...just like this season. The epic scoring droughts are not something that just recently appeared. It is becoming an annual event, like Groundhog's Day.And before Mr. Super Nate Linhart Fan gets his panties in a bunch - Linhart was a solid player. I know that. My point is exactly as stated above. It is laughable to blame any big 2009-10 loss on the absence of Nate Linhart. Unless, of course, you want to give credit for every 2009-10 win to the fact that he's gone, and his absence has allowed this group of players to blossom. If Brett McKnight goes 16 points...2 points...18 points...4 points...we're going to go win...lose...win...lose. Nate Linhart has as much to do with it as Jami Bosley or Dru Joyce. -
Looking at the errors pointed out in the comments beneath the column, it is obvious the guy either doesn't know what he's talking about, or simply whipped up something to meet a deadline. He may end up being correct...but it isn't due to his research and attention-to-detail...it would just be dumb luck. I will give Ianello the benefit of the doubt. He deserves it.

Schrock vs. Potts 4/23/10
Captain Kangaroo replied to xu9697's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I'll keep repeating what I have been saying for a couple of months....I'm hoping for another situation like we had when JD got hired, and brought a good QB with him. I still think that we'd have never won a MAC title without that move. With Nicely here, it is going to be tough to get a quality QB to to commit for this class. Patrick's not going anywhere for 3 years. And to be fair - I am not sold on D'Orazio being a DB. I think he will get a good look at QB. FYI - Walt Harris loved Potts as a QB. It is scary what could happen if Nicely gets injured. Maybe there is an "athletic" QB we can get...a la Jeff Sweitzer...who would be content biding his time at another position like WR or punt returner...until Patrick graduates. -
Not so fast my friend...http://akron.scout.com/a.z?s=333&p=8&a...amp;nid=4266308#165 DE in the country...2 stars. Nothing to brag about, but nice size and like someone said earlier= if he is playing basketball (and his biography on the page says, "standout basketball performer") he is probably a darn good athlete.Apparently when you get stars you get an inch taller and lose 10 pounds.Nice! Rivals and Scout OFTEN have differences there..who the hell knows why.You look at three sneetches...they all look the same. But some have stars, and some don't? It's an age-old question...
