Apparently the old Zips football golf outing is returning after a 4-year (or so) stint with the Varsity A as a "General Sports Outing." I'm happy to see it. That thing was at it's best when it was a football-focused event.$150.00 is a bit steep (compared to the $100 fee last year) but Prestwick is a hell of a lot nicer than Mayfair.Beware the links to the entry .pdf don't work at this time.Click for Some Details

I talked to the keyboardist for the Michael Stanley Band yesterday. He says Hixson won't cut it in the NFL. I'm going to get the drummer from Devo's opinion on Luke Getsy next.

Two articles from competitive papers. An interesting read even if the kid didn't choose the Zips:Did Jeter make the right choice? By Kevin GormanTRIBUNE-REVIEWSunday, April 30, 2006Lance Jeter was a first-team all-state selection in football and basketball, so it was no surprise the Beaver Falls star struggled to decide which sport to play in college.Jeter ultimately chose to play football at Cincinnati, picking the Bearcats last week over basketball offers from Akron and George Washington.Did he make the right choice?A college coach once said, if a football player isn't good enough to make an all-area all-star team, such as the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Terrific 25, you have to wonder how he'll do at a major-college football program.Jeter was the Trib's 2005 Player of the Year and a two-time Terrific 10 selection in basketball. In football, he wasn't an All-WPIAL Class AA pick, let alone on the Terrific 25.The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder has all the ability in the world; it's just a matter of whether he's following his heart or the advice of those who are telling him he'll play on Sundays. High School Views: Jeter's decision shouldn't be trashedTuesday, May 02, 2006By Colin DunlapSo how about this for trash talk? Some people are saying Beaver Falls senior two-sport star Lance Jeter made the wrong decision when he recently opted to play football at the University of Cincinnati and spurned basketball offers from George Washington and Akron. Some internet message boards are buzzing with the talk that Jeter's choice to play wide receiver for the Bearcats was flat out wrong .The statement that Jeter made the wrong decision might just be the most off-base contention muttered so far the entire school year. How can anyone truly believe that Jeter made the wrong decision?Sure, he played basketball hero virtually every time a Beaver Falls game went down to the wire. When games were tight, it was Jeter who seemingly always buried the final shot, propelling the Tigers to the win.But why must some people dog the kid because he's choosing to play football in college? After all, have you seen him recently? Just take a few minutes to give him a once-over. Give a quick look starting at his broad, muscular shoulders .Jeter is 6 feet 3, 200 pounds of athletic talent. He is put together on a par with any athlete in the WPIAL.Beaver Falls basketball coach Doug Biega knows exactly what Jeter's body has the potential to do on Saturday afternoons for the Cincinnati football team.Said Biega: "I told Lance, 'Hey, you can be really good in basketball, but with that body and with your athletic ability, football might just be the way to go.' There really aren't a lot of kids built like Lance who can run and jump like that."No, there aren't.And, um, oh yeah, there's something else. There's just another small little detail that the people who said Jeter made the wrong decision have failed to mention. The cost for one-year of school at Cincinnati for an out-of-state student is $23,904.On top of that, a meal plan and dorm lodging is an additional $8,286. That's a little more than 32 grand per year to go to Cincinnati. That is before the books and other incidentals. So think about that, Jeter is getting a four-year education valued at about $128,000 for free because of football. And he made the wrong decision?Yeah, right.Sure, he would have received a high-dollar education for free had he opted to play basketball at either George Washington or Akron. But, to say he made the "wrong" decision by choosing to head off to Cincinnati is so far off-base it borders on comical. To me at least, there wasn't a wrong decision Lance Jeter could have made. He had three schools fighting for his athletic services and, in turn, they were going to ante up the cash for his college education.Honestly, in his situation, there weren't any wrong decisions to be made. There's a big piece of me that is hoping Jeter becomes an All-Big East receiver at Cincinnati and a guy who sharpens his skills to the level where one day, he becomes an NFL prospect. That way, he can look back to his college choice. Maybe he'll crack a smile and say softly to himself, "Those people who said I made the wrong decision ... well, they made the wrong decision. They never should have doubted Lance Jeter."

Hey Blue Raider: Here's a tip - If there's a blue background, you might want to choose a font color other than blue!

He had limited opportunities. No carries that I recall. I forsee he and McDaniel splitting time this season.

Andy Alleman will be drafted next year. Take it to the bank. I tried telling them that at the bank today but they seemed very confused. I repeated it a couple of times and they threatened to call the cops on me. Not sure why. My bad. I forgot to add "with a gun." If you simply repeat "Andy Alleman will be drafted next year" to a teller...no gun...you will just get blank stares.

I saw Rasor had a link to a Liberty Flame football site where a poster mentioned a Zip with "a lot of injuries and illnesses" was considering a transfer to a 1-AA school. I'll guess Brandon Butler.

Dude...Akron left the OVC 20 years ago. Reagan is no longer President....vinyl records have been replaced by CD's, and now MP3's...the Chevette is no longer in production...you must let go of the 80's...move into the 21st century. How did you get Internet access with your Commador 64?

Captain Kangaroo replied to GoZips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Preferred walk ons pretty much have a guaranteed spot on the team. Also, they are in-line for a scholarship if someone (like Bubba) drops out. KD must like Garth. You don't see the "preferred walk on" tag in hoops too frequently. It is pretty common in football. -
Saying things like "space fillers" for these guys isn't very appreciative for guys that do everything the starters do except get their minutes. They practice just as hard and many times outhustle these guys. Correct me if I am wrong, but haven't walk-ons earned scholarships and minutes at DI colleges. What I'm saying is you cannot state "we have too many guards" and include the three non-scholarship guards who barely saw a meaningful minute last season to prove that point. Those guys do not count because they have never been, nor will ever be part of our game day rotation...unless we're playing Dennison.Yes, walk-ons have earned minutes and scholarships at other schools. Hell...they've done it at Akron. Goddard, Salee, Sowers and Mraz will not get scholarships. MAYBE, if they stuck around for their senior seasons KD would reward one with a single year scholarship.

I think the University should hand out kazoos at the home opener this year and invite the entire audience to join the band in performing the fight song at the beginning of the game (maybe during too?) Maybe it helps form a bond between the band and the fans? I'm sure it could be marketed in a fun light (ie. "Hop on the Band's Wagon!").

Thanks, Chief! It is time I settled on one, and I think this is it.

I think that is true for BCS schools, but not for MAC schools. Too often the #2 (pre 2-bid era) or #3 MAC team has been left out of a bowl solely due of politics. Securing these new bowls ensures that won't happen again. Today's #3, and often #4 MAC football teams should not be staying home in December. I think 4 is a good number. If you finish #5...6...etc. in the MAC you don't deserve a bowl bid at this time. The bottom of the league is simply too weak.

It is quite a complement to the Zips that, if you don't play your best game, you will lose to us. It wasn't too long ago that teams could afford quite a few mistakes vs. the Zips and still come out with a "W."FYI: I traveled to the MTSU game. If it weren't for the ref "overlooking" your WR's foot being a full 2 feet out of bounds when he caught your lone TD, MTSU probably would not have scored in that game. You guys couldn't stop Hixson...he killed you.

Sallee, Mraz, Goddard and Sowers don't count in my book. They're just space-fillers at the end of the bench and not on scholarship.

I look forward to seeing him on the JAR floor now that the recruiting is over!**************************************************************Nick Dials Look-alike: Recruiting: Different sports for McNees, JeterWednesday, April 26, 2006By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-GazetteSteve McNees -- High on AkronShenango High School's Steve McNees and Beaver Falls' Lance Jeter had been recruited lately by a few of the same colleges for basketball. Both made college choices in the past couple days and chose schools in Ohio. But they will play different sports.Jeter decided yesterday to play football at the University of Cincinnati, turning down a few scholarship offers for basketball.McNees made a verbal commitment Sunday to play basketball at the University of Akron. He will play point guard.Jeter (6 feet 3) will play receiver at Cincinnati. He was one of the top receivers in the WPIAL as a senior. Jeter visited Cincinnati last week and also visited Akron and George Washington for basketball.George Washington also recruited McNees recently. Akron took its first shot at landing McNees last fall, then got him on the rebound a few days ago. The Zips recruited McNees before he signed with Duquesne University. But, when Duquesne coach Danny Nee resigned at the end of the season, McNees asked Duquesne to be released from his letter of intent.McNees was granted his release, and his recruiting opened. Akron, George Washington and Rhode Island were among 10 schools that offered scholarships, and McNees visited Eastern Kentucky."The last time, it was really a tough call with Duquesne, Akron and Can't State," McNees said. "I was high on Akron all along. I really like coach [Keith] Dambrot. I think he's a great guy. There are really no negatives to the place."Akron plays in the Mid-American Conference and finished last season with a 23-10 record, the most wins for the Zips since they moved into Division I in 1980.Akron's starting point guard next season is slated to be Dru Joyce, a former teammate of LeBron James at St. Vincent-St. Mary High in Akron. Joyce is a senior, and McNees figures to vie for the starting job as a sophomore."I'll play any position just to get on the court," McNees said.

Per the Pittsburgh Tribune:Ex-Duquesne recruit chooses AkronBy Kevin GormanTRIBUNE-REVIEWWednesday, April 26, 2006Steve McNees spent the weekend playing for the Cleveland Titans AAU basketball club at the Pittsburgh JamFest. The Shenango star will have to get used to an Ohio address now that he's headed there for college.McNees signed Tuesday with Akron after he was released from his national letter of intent and scholarship to Duquesne earlier this month. The 6-foot-2 point guard chose the Zips over Eastern Kentucky, George Washington and Rhode Island. He also had offers from James Madison, Can't State, Robert Morris, Wright State and Youngstown State."We had a lot of offers, and Steve had a good opportunity to go play," said Bill McNees, Steve's father and former coach at Shenango. "After sorting them all out, this is the program and staff Steve felt most comfortable with."McNees averaged 28.4 points, 8.0 assists and 6.9 rebounds per game this past season, after which he was named to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Terrific 10 and All-WPIAL Class AA first team. A four-year starter, he finished his career tied for 15th in WPIAL history with 2,192 points and with school records for points, assists (824) and steals (233).McNees made an official visit to Akron last fall before signing with Duquesne and then-coach Danny Nee. McNees asked for his release two weeks ago after meeting with new Dukes coach Ron Everhart."It's a school we've always been interested in and was interested in us," Bill McNees said of Akron. "It's a school we always thought very highly of. It's an excellent program. We liked the coaching staff, and it's a great atmosphere. We felt it was an excellent situation for Steve."

McNees verbals to Akron?

He looks more like Jayson "White Chocolate" Williams. Did Dials gat a giant tatoo that I'm unaware of? I see no resemblance between him and Dials.Click Me to See McNees as a Fab 5
