We had a solid kicker for about two consecutive decades. Then Igor mentally lost it...and we've been screwed ever since. I don't see how we scholarship a freshman kicker, then he gets beat-out by a walk-on Junior? I really hope our place-kicking isn't the Chinese Firedrill it's been for the past 3 seasons...but I have a feeling it will drive me to insanity yet again. The one thing I noticed during the open practice was the trajectory of Marchese's placekicks versus the others. His ball doesn't necessarily go the farthest, but it gets in the air more quickly on a steeper angle of climb. Hopefully this mean no more of those FG attempts that go straight into both lines. Don't you find it annoyng that a school that can field the best soccer program can't find a decent kicker for football?? Get one of the 3rd or 4th teamers on the soccer team to come try our!!! Isn't it a bit premature to denigrate the kickers on the team? From what I've seen and heard, TJ Marchese is pretty accurate. I agree with JZ84 that he gets the ball in the air very quickly. I don't know if he has any distance. Perhaps we have a different long field goal kicker.

Yep.. very impressive... looked like a practice for most of the first half... Pass the ball around and wear out the defense... draw them away from the goal. Funny assessment from Porter too... named almost everyone but Balogun and Portillos... and Balogun had a great game... much improved as Porter said... must have been a hell of an off-season. They should have tried some own goals to keep Meves awake. Here's an interesting tidbit: Game next Thursday will be a homecoming for Michael Balogun. He was a member of Cal-St Fullerton -- but doesn't seem to have ever played for them. So his last real experience was three yrs ago -- I don't think he played at all for Akron last year -- did he (red shirt)? He played last year. He was the main replacement when Kofi Sarkodie went down. He played in 18 games and started four.

Here is a link to the University Park Alliance's website & breakdown of the plan. I found humor in a couple of the ideas. Concerning the University Square District, "Said Ectus: 'What I would love to do is blur the distinction between the campus and the city.'" Also, concerning the Main Street Distict (Canal Park, Lock 3 Park area), " If there were to be a new University of Akron arena, it could also be located nearby." No doubt Jake will be riled up. And finally, an idea we on ZNO have been suggesting for years: '''We must get the Mayflower redeveloped,' he said, referring to Mayflower Manor, a downtown residential building that was built as a hotel." Blue & Gold knocks it out of the park as " Jake" has been very busy. From the Sunday BJ: Published on Sunday, May 29, 2011 Enhancing UA and Akron I read the statements made by EE&K principal Stanton Eckstut in the May 9 story ''Focusing on four Akron districts.'' As a supporter of both the University of Akron and the downtown area, I appreciate his verification of what UA and downtown have been planning and doing. However, I do not agree with his desire to ''blur the distinction between the campus and the city.'' Nor do I agree with his implication that UA should build a new arena off campus. These two ideas are in major opposition to the university's desire to build a reputable campus with distinct boundaries and visual integrity. This UA vision began with the New Landscape for Learning in the fall and winter of 1999, and has resulted in a university campus that has won rave reviews for its distinction and beauty. As stated in the UA Master Plan, the planting of 30,000 trees and 20,000 hedges, bushes and other plants will help define UA's boundaries, line walkways and give the metropolitan campus a green and open park-like feel. I also feel that this philosophy has contributed to UA's increased enrollment figures. The plan to continue to sharpen UA's boundaries in no way conflicts with the collaborative vision of any entity within the University Park Alliance. Integrity and healthy boundaries add to the positive vision of all members of the effort. Distinction does not mean disintegration, and boundaries do not equal walls. UA has finally achieved the recognition it deserves in part by establishing healthy boundaries, which only say to the community and region: ''Welcome.'' Keeping that integrity will only help to strengthen both the campus and the downtown area and community. Going in the opposite direction will give the university and surrounding community a pseudo quality deserving of little respect and recognition. As far as building a new UA arena goes, building it adjacent to or near the UA football stadium is nearby enough for downtown. The on-campus football stadium is a plum for downtown and a multipurpose UA arena next to it would be a downtown asset as well. Let's not let UA slip back into the days where it faded into the woodwork, causing it to be referred to as, ''Hilltop High.'' That would be bad for both UA and the city. David Culp Akron

It is bad. I wonder if the neighborhood its located in has anything to do with it. Friends of students who live in the ghetto only have to walk a few blocks to get there. I wouldn't be surprised if the perps were off-campus students themselves. Until we bulldoze everything south of UA bounded by I-76, Route 8, and the train tracks, things like this will continue to happen. It's happening, but it's slow. Sad to hear this news but as we all know, this area is NOT part of the campus!

In my opinion, drawing conclusions from information obtained from one of two parties involved is dubious. Asking both sides their recollection of the exchange would give anyone the best information to form that conclusion. You've heard the term perception is reality? It doesn't really matter what icoach thinks he said, what's more important is what a student group thinks he said. Is that fair? No, but that's the way it is. Thanks for reporting what Coach Ianello felt about it. I haven't taken the time to do so. My one suggestion for him would be to refrain from making jokes that could be misunderstood. It's a distraction that was unnecessary. Best to joke about yourself. I'm sure members of ZN are willing to forward suggestions whether solicited or not.

I have enjoyed your thoughtful well reasoned contributions to this forum and have agreed with most of your assesssments. I find it odd that after talking with icoach you would arrive at this or any conclusion. What is the upside for icoach to admit he was less than flattering to the student group or conversely for Ian to publicly disagree with the coaches recollection? In your "shades of grey" arguments, you might arrive at a different conclusion if you were to ask members of the AKRowdies who were there. At best the controversy is a stalemate unless others who witnessed this exchange were to come forward and agree or disagree with one side or the other. The fact that icoach thinks he has a good relationship with the Rowdies should have been a red flag for you. Where were these good relationships fostered? What evidence is there of this good relationship? I don't recall anyone mentioning meetings with student groups or any other activity used to endear coach, team and students. One look no further than Caleb Porter and Keith Dambrot to show a different effort and result in enthusiasm and support for their respective teams. Yes, Bball could be better but there is a core group of diehards who always show their support. My personal obsevations of icoach is that he doesn't attempt to meet fans and engage them as the face of the team. As a coach, I would say that is yet to be determined. These are all new responsibilities he has accepted as a head coach. The product on the field has to be his first priority but I believe he can and will improve as the face of the team. The support for Akron Football has been decimated. Good PR combined with a better product will go a long way in repairing the damage of Zips Football 2010.
