  1. New New Mexico coordinator Doug Martin, who had been coach at Can't State, has a lot of work to do. The Aggies have been abysmal on offense of late and haven't really been effective throwing the ball since Hal Mumme was fired as coach. Read more: http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/...0#ixzz1PqLXKhfa New Mexico Aggies! I'm sure that one will make the Lobos happy. Like calling them the Akron Flashes.
  2. What sport does he play? He's listed as a guard haha Also, that says "Freshman", but he has played in college for 3 years?! I thought that meant goalkeeper. Did we have a BB teammate of his a few yrs ago (Wauwatosa East HS)? Or was that West?
  3. As long as you aren't one of the people making the calls, it is a great place to work. The real sad part is, 30 years ago people would have laughed at the idea of a telemarketing company being a top employer in NE Ohio. It's really a statement of what has happened to NE Ohio and less of a statement about InfoCision. + (and )
  4. That's why Pearl Harbor Shipyard is the biggest employer in Hawaii.
  5. Whatever it was, it sure worked in Dallas (4-1 victory for second win of season)! I wouldn't mess with it if Iwere coach.
  6. Ends up, BronBron's been hangin' with another playah who has trouble finishin'. Could this be the week, he finally overcomes his inability to win the big one? “If people keep talking about having a bad last quarter all the time, it’s going to sort of get to you,”
  7. I'm glad to have seen this (belatedly). I don't know who did the research to come up with the "$15B per year" figure, but without seeing the research, I'd have to be a skeptic. On the other hand, we (those of us who work for the DoD in engineering) have a total capacity of military equipment that's probably valued in all over a $Trillion, so perhaps it's not unlikely that annual natural loss of assets is that high. I also support the intent and value of what Rep Sutton is working toward. Sure, buying pork is one of the goals most legislators aspire to. That's why schools like So Miss., and the U. of Hawaii are piggy-backing on the corrosion control bandwagon. Sen Inouye was flabbergasted at the end of earmarks. Looks like he's found a new pen to slop around in. I'm looking forward to possibly meeting our Corrosion Control Program chief. She's due in the islands next month from what I hear. The local assets I work with are C-17 cargo aircraft likely valued at least a couple hundred million a piece, and F-22 fighters worth probably a few times that. We're putting up the maintenance hangars for the new F-22s now, and if we don't get too many more endangered species camping out, they should be mostly done this year. Which reminds me. I gotta do some work before the day's done. Aloha.
  8. I'm ready to get on the bus with GoZips. I just hope our driver is more skilled than those who aren't steering toward the Sweet Sixteen. I'm also sorry that the fans in the JAR Arena won't have a chance to see the Bulldogs @ home. They put on a real fine show here last year!
  9. !La nacion de Akron esta' en la casa! I'm thinking of bringing that banner to HDC for the CD Chivas USA game on Oct 2. (and @UCSB 10/5) Who's with me?
  10. Is it Cob Cadet, or Corn Cob Cadet? Hey -- that makes me think...UCSB throws tortillas. We could...

You guys are in a fantasy alright! It is one thing to play in the same division as the teams that play in the bowl games, and play for the highest national title, but it is something completely different to actually compete seriously against those teams. No MAC school will be competing for a football national title in our lifetimes. Period.
  12. It lasted a LOT longer than I would have ever guessed! One of my first jobs, as my brother was maintenance manager/Chief Jerry Rigger.
  13. http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/wizar...LFKH_story.html [“We’re a different place,” says Keith Dambrot, an Akron native who won two high school state titles at St. Vincent-St. Mary High with James and is now the head coach at the University of Akron. “It’s not like Akron is a suburb. It’s separate, and I think it is different in a lot of ways. I don’t think anyone from Akron says, ‘I’m from outside of Cleveland.’ We’re from Akron.”] I couldn't agree more, Coach. Absolutely true. We aren't Bedford or North Royalton. We are Akron. Aaaahhhhh -- Bedford is Bedford! North Royalton I'm not so sure about.
  14. Interesting but no way do the vast majority of kids get these sorts of opportunities Part V. The grass is always greener where they throw the sauerkraut. Mom, it's hardly as if the US has never considered foreign coaching strategies. In fact, sometimes it seems we've explored everything so much, we've failed to develop our own system.
  15. Thanks, Johnny. I'll put that shot of 'Z-tine' next to the one of Blair Gavin -- both beating LandyCakes to the ball. Hey -- Chivas plays @Houston tomorrow. I haven't seen Kofie play yet this season -- and I think he has as much potential, skill-wise and athletically as any of the Class of Twenty-Ten. Chivas plays as well or better on the road than any team in MLS. Kofi's lack of minutes early in the season has been the most surprising to me. But it does look like he's been getting more opportunities lately. I agree 100% regarding his potential. Perhaps he's having a little trouble adjusting to playing a more traditional defender role as opposed to the freelancing he was permitted to do as a Zip (the Zip D was so consistent and solid, Kofi was frequently available to make deep runs without the risk of giving up a counter). On draft day, I remember the analysts saying they didn't understand Houston drafting Kofi because they were already loaded with defenders...which may be the issue. FYI -- Kofi did not play. And Zarek was replaced, after starting about ten straight games for Chivas by Paulo Nagamura, already my least favorite MLS player. Seeing the game in its entirety, I expect 'Z' to return to the starting lineup this week.
  16. Thanks, Johnny. I'll put that shot of 'Z-tine' next to the one of Blair Gavin -- both beating LandyCakes to the ball. Hey -- Chivas plays @Houston tomorrow. 17. My prediction is the ncaa will never hand out the death penalty again after what happened to smu after they received it. Wow.. great prediction. That would be impressive had it been BEFORE the NCAA said it would never again hand out a death penalty. We're both wrong. Two schools received the death penalty since smu in lower divisions. Actually Doug, I was only wrong once. You were wrong twice. Congrats, you win. I loved the Wiki article. This statement about the Morehouse soccer team in particular: The NCAA came down particularly hard on Morehouse due to a lack of institutional control; for a time the athletic department didn't know the soccer program even existed. At least the Akron Athletic Department knows they have a football team, even if no one else cares.
  18. Well, folks, this gets more interesting all the time. By this time next week, they may be down to their freshman team.
  19. Nice find Johnny! Thanks for the translation from the original Macedonian. I think that's the country in the Balkans, and not the township outside Nordonia. I have to admit, I'm learning more all the time from the Zipsnation. Up until last year's College Cup I had always thought the Nanchoffs were Hungarian, and escaped from the Soviet takeover in '56. Then someone wrote that they were actually from Yugoslavia. Now it's narrowed down to the village of Resen. Amazing.
  20. WOW! They can do that? Come to think of it, I think that's how the guy Cortez got his chance with Chivas USA -- he was a part of their Academy team before joining the reserves and becoming the leading scorer. I hope Caleb knows about this "opportunity"!
  21. Thanks for the report, as I was too busy to put it on here till now. YES! Los Quatro Zips! I didn't see Blair after the game as you reported, but I did think that they may swap jerseys. lol they did! I only saw the first half of the Chivas-Vancouver game on last wed or Thursday, and I don't think Nanchoff played. Frankly, Chivas is not playing good soccer at home -- but they managed to get four points in two games vs the leagues newest franchises -- which is the least they had to do. Eric Wynalda made some praiseful comments about Darlington's potential during the broadcast for Fox West. While the Goats played one of their lesser games on Saturday, Portland is awful away from home. They were rarely able to put more than two passes together, and played so many balls from their back line forward that it was painful to watch. Neither team looked to have any finishing ability -- thank heaven the Argentinian rookie Mondaini was back from his suspension. Chivas plays better on the road than at home -- Justin Braun played what must have been the worst game of his career Saturday nite -- but he recorded a hat trick against the NY Red Bulls in New York a couple weeks ago. Overall, I think both CDCUSA and Timbers have a good shot at a playoff spot. The West is very competitive.
  22. Pete Milich George Nanchoff Simon Spelling Shaun Docking Steve Zakuani Darlington Nagbe Some of the most talented played only one or two years. J. B. Amogua (sp)? And yes, I think Evan Bush was a better collegiate keeper than David Meves. Meves will need to be stellar this year for Zips to succeed. Thank you, Buflobo! JB Amangoa (sp?) . I was trying to remember that name just last weekend. As I recall he was from Ivory Coast, yes? Fantastic player, first team all-America I believe.
  23. Mark Alberts! He set the NCAA career 3-point FG record with over 300. Of course the record was surpassed the same night bya player from Radford U. Nonetheless, one of the all-time greats. Also, overlooked and considered the first true great player at Akron, in the 50s -- and someone who would go on to be the greatest Akron player-to-coach: Mike Harkins, who passed away just a year or two ago. Here's Mike's bio: Mike Harkins is the former head basketball coach of Eastern Montana College (now Montana State University—Billings). In 15 seasons at Eastern Montana, his teams won 295 games, 10 NAIA district titles, and 12 conference championships. He also coached four teams in international competition. In 1973, he was head coach of the US World University Games team in Rio de Janeiro. Harkins also served as a professor of health, physical education, and recreation at Eastern Montana College, where he received the college’s award for outstanding achievement in scholarship and creativity. In addition, he was awarded Akron University’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1987. He retired from active coaching in 1976. (He also was Ass't Coach of the USA team at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.)
  24. Off topic, but I was thinking who could represent the 50th State earlier this week when this was brought to my attention. US Soccer: 50 States & 50 Jerseys Z.I.P. came to mind and you just reminded me. The gentleman who owns the 49th State I've met a few times at past US matches. He's the one who's behind this idea. Hey, that's pretty cool Crew8! I gotta find out where to get one customized. I'm up for it -- even if I never attend a USA game in person. I just can't believe the Frozen North is spoken for, but not the land of USA #9. I think that was Chingie's #. There's another Hawai'i kid coming up -- a 15 Y.O., who's playing in Germany for a "varsity" club. He moved to So Cal at 14, played for Irvine Strikers, and got a try-out with the Bundeslige club. Hopefully he gets in a USA jersey soon.
