  1. Thank you for that, Cap'n. At the risk of offending the hard helmeted, I can't help wondering how those 14 could be more of a drain than the 75 scholarships for another money-losing sport. I'm not (on this occasion) suggesting dropping any sports, but just wondering how one sport can have such redundancy compared to any other -- and no, I'm not referring to the men's futbol team, they only get 9.5 grants-in-aid.
  2. Alright, give me a spare but I am actually going to chime in on this crazy train conversation. Can anyone tell me why -- unless my inattentiveness made me miss it -- there has been no outcry from such corners as, um, the FACULTY? Have they been so dumbed down that they've given up on caring?
  3. I was quite surprised to hear of Drew playing LB. Is that his first time outside the center back spot, and why would he be out there -- does someone on the bench think there's a better option than him (now THAT's scary!).
  4. Pretty amazing -- Butler was the only school above MAC-level to offer Brown, but I have to think Butler's coaching staff told him he didn't have much of a future there. I recall Can't and Ohio were on the MB recruiting list, and probably offered him along with the likes of Cal State Northridge and Fullerton State. From what I know, KD never came close to offering him.
  5. Very sad to hear about the passing of Joe Curl -- who I knew from his days at Stephen F. Austin prior to joining the Cougars for a long and successful run. As I recall, one of Coach Kest's first major wins was vs Houston in a game @ Akron. Was hoping when I read the heading that she would take the Gonzaga job, which is being eyed by Hawaii coach Laura Beaman. In any case. best wishes and mahalos to coach Kest. You never know, maybe she'll stay...
  6. Dave (and Noah) lol I DO know the way to San Jose -- been there multiple times, AND "glamorous" is not a word I would use to describe it.
  7. Anybody in for a road trip to Albuquerque? Too bad it's only a single game, instead of a tournament like our last visit, though. Game day is Friday night before Labor Day -- I will probably go if I can combine with West Coast games for my Rainbow Wahine, or maybe trip to Portland.
  8. The BC AD is the former Miami AD Brad Bates, hired in 2012. He may just be expressing favoritism to his old conference. Who knows? Background: http://espn.go.com/boston/ncf/story/_/id/8482990/boston-college-eagles-hire-brad-bates-new-athletic-director
  9. Depends -- did he take the final scholly, or is he a walk-on? I don't believe partial scholarships are permitted in MBB (as they are e.g., in soccer), are they?
  10. The women's team has announced its 2014 Fall schedule: http://gozips.com/sports/wsoc/2013-14/releases/201404071c9owx I just wondered, since the title of this thread is what it is...does Akron women's soccer have spring games? If not, that may be a tip off of how Title IX is not working out. I do know that here in Hawaii, our women's soccer team hosted a 7v7 tournament, but no full games. We've had mainland teams play here in most years, even USC in a game attended by 4000+ last year (there was a youth tournament going on at the facility surrounding the stadium). But, I think most all D-1 men's soccer teams play a spring schedule, no?
  11. Damn! I can't wait to get my new USA YEDLIN jersey!!! Go Yanquis!
  12. Ahem... "Malvern Prep's 6-5, 270-pound junior lineman committed to the University of Miami on Saturday Read more at http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/high_school/20140401_Malvern_s_Mahoney_commits_to_Miami.html#w03sfuWLEty6CMzW.99 Cap'n, whodathunk there would be two "Miami'"s!!!
  13. You know what's really interesting? Abu Danladi - Forward - Takoradi, Ghana - Dunn High School - Played with the Santa Barbara Soccer Club. Ranked by College Soccer News as the number 22 player in the class of 2014. All-CIP in 2012 and 2013 UCLA is now stealing players from under the nose of UC Santa Barbara. Dunn School in Los Olivos used to be effectively the UCSB Academy -- for Ghanaian refugees.
  14. Damn, I love this thread. Thank you Gozips for starting it!!! -- Isn't it about time we discussed Akron moving to the BIG TIME!?!? Although, just to give my personal opinion, I feel great sympathy for Balsy, who wrote: "UA made a commitment first to football, so we're unfortunately stuck with it." Sorry LZip, but I would like to employ the Idaho Vandals as a role model. The former PAC-8 member leaves the WAC in 2014 for the Big Sky Conference. Who says Akron can't move up to the MVC?
  15. LOL! MD, the only thing I put a lot of stock into is my chicken soup!
  16. Where did they get that logo? I like it! Now can we put it on a T-shirt, Jared? Please.
  17. Ummmm, pardon me Mr Comic Sans MS, but making the world cup team is what the article was talking about. That's what the author, Mr Clark meant when he wrote "Here are five players with three caps or fewer who might just possibly be able to snag a spot in Brazil." Were you lost in a Bufalobo snow storm or something? On another track, I hear there is a chance the fall schedule could be out in April, as it is final. But then again, I'm not planning to hold my breath...
  18. Top Drawer soccer has a list of five longshots who could make the US team in Brasil, and someone named, "DeAndre" is at the top of the list. I didn't notice anyone named "Brek" BTW! And can anyone comment on the tat? Never saw that before... http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/the91stminute/2014/03/five-usmnt-long-shots-for-brazil/?utm_source=All&utm_campaign=General_03_21_14&utm_medium=email
  19. @DiG, I hate to ruin your trip down nostalgia lane, with your report on the War Memorial Coliseum, but the Akron press release in Zn.o archives says this about the game time and venue:: Wednesday, March 19, 2014 • 7:00 p.m. ET Hillard Gates Sports Center (2,300) Fort Wayne, Ind. Yes -- capacity 2,300! Gee, If the Mastodons are so motivated to win in their first try at post-season basketball, their fans are going to be pretty upset that that 13,000 seat arena won't be filled. Maybe they're just trying to quiet the thousands of Akron fans they were afraid would make the trip? One other detail: Rumor has it George Mikan has returned his tickets.
  20. Sorry I Can't make it to Indiana. BUT, I can tell you about upsets! - I was in Maples Pavilion back in 1998 when #16 seed Harvard (the Stanford of the East) knocked off #1 seed Stanford (the Harvard of the West), the only first round victory for a 16 seed. Stanford had two all-Americans injured after their final game, including the legendary Lindsay Yamasaki. Akron has the team chemistry to beat Purdue -- they must come out with supreme confidence and get open shots -- but they have to exert as much energy defending the Boilers' post game. Purdue will go in assuming they can simply beat up on Akron in the paint. We have to use our athleticism, without getting in foul trouble, then knock down open J's. Go Zips!
  21. It costs $30,000 to buy a home game in the CIT. If Gozips wants to know the source, the quote comes from the Tournament Director, former Hawaii coach Riley Wallace. Akron apparently didn't have the $ to play at home. On the other hand, Hawaii turned down their former coach for even a road game, based on travel expense. BTW, did I say how much I'm looking forward to seeing 15-15 Pacific @15-14 Grand Canyon? Will this one be nationally televised, or will it be on the internet, symbolic of the home team, playing in their first post-season, in the school's first year in Div 1? edit: Forgot to say, Go Zips, Spear those Mastodons! Our one NCAA team title beats their four NCAA men's volleyball final fours.
  22. IPFW has played in four final fours, and hosted one -- in men's volleyball.
  23. I can assure you that Sigi Schmid, Deandre Yedlin and all Sounders Nation are wondering where the freight train they played Saturday came from. No more easy wins vs TFC!
  24. I can understand that the refs missed that call where (was it?) Tree hit the underside of the backboard trying for the block -- it happened a second or two before the ball went through, and it's so rare that the refs can miss something like that rather easily. HOWEVER -- to play devil's advocate: The goaltending called on Can't State in the first half of last Friday's game was one of the worst missed calls I've seen all season -- as the announcers said, the ball not only wasn't in the cylinder, but HALF of the ball was below the rim when it was rebounded! But, hey -- that's what we call "ancient history", eh Zippers?
  25. WOW!!! Just saw this...So IOW, we have a chance the second time around this season vs the Chipps on Friday. Sorry that I will miss this game. Unlike Akron men's basketball, ESPN does not appear to have a contract to broadcast most Akron women's basketball games! I think the win over OU this afternoon (HST) was our 16th national TV game this year on the Family.
