  1. Hey, YSU and Can't BOTH got more than we did. I am sure Tressel made sure YSU had a sweet payday.
  2. Are you honestly going to say that Getsy was the reason Akron won the MAC East? I thought it had more to do with the East being terrible and all the moons happened to align (ie..all the teams lost that had to) in order for us to win the title. We didn't really win it, we kind of slid into it. I am not complaining though.Did Frye happen to give up 30 points a game like the D did? For 10 years we have had potent offenses and zero D. Now all the sudden we have a good D and no O. Back to Getsy...wasn't he the guy that had a losing record last year with probably the most talented team Akron has placed on the field in YEARS?
  3. I didn't like the article myself. I am a already a fan, so I appreciate what JD is doing by getting rid of the head cases. However, it seems like any chance the local media gets to print a negative aspect about the program they do it. Very rarely do we get positive articles trying to build local support. The articles are all....1. We don't deserve a new stadium, but hey it's great for the city.2. The team has head cases and the coach had to get rid of some.3. We are not a major enough program to support ourselves because Akron and the conference in general stinks.4. Nobody wants to go to the gamesblah, blah, blah!!!How often are there articles talking about what the program and the community can do in order to get to the next level? Lets face it...the media shapes public opinion whether you want to believe it or not. If all you hear is how pathetic the program and the conference is and all you hear are mostly the negatives pretty soon you will believe it EVEN IF you are a fan.It would be refreshing to see what would happen if the local media (ABJ) actually covered the program like they gave a damn that it existed.
  4. I think we would have the most success on the field, in the stands and in scheduling possibility by trying to play teams like....KentuckyPittsburghPurdueIndianaMichigan StateSyracuseMarylandNorthwesternIowa StateSouth FloridaEast CarolinaCincinnatiMemphisNC StateI can see all those teams POSSIBLY scheduling a home and home series with us. I just don't want to play too big of a school where we get embarrassed at home. I think we can at least compete with these schools except maybe a MSU or Maryland. It would give the home fans a good show and draw ticket interest from fans.
  5. I was listening to 640 the other morning and I heard they carry all the Malone football games. How can Malone get a station with that sort of signal, yet Akron can't even get one that can broadcast over it's own entire city?
  6. Pre-injury Brandon Payne was very, very good. He just never had the explosion after the knee injury and he lost a lot of his elusiveness.
  7. I agree GP1. Very well done. Also, thank you for the quote to eguins. I find it hilarious because I was on JJhuddle reading about their game with OSU and YSU fans are all the same. They started ripping into Buckeye fans because they said it was a disgrace to play YSU. They started crying and moaning "We have a winning record against Can't and Akron... It is more of a disgrace to play them." It was a big pout fest.I guess what they fail to realize is we are no longer the same program we were when we used to play them. I mean....do we sit here and hang our hat on beating Ohio State back in the 1800's?I don't ever want to play YSU again....EVER!!! It has nothing to do with filling seats or being scared we could potentially lose to them as they suggest. It is just a step in the wrong direction for OUR program. All it can do is help them, but all it can do is hurt us.
  8. I guess it has come quite a way on defense, but I would love to have Frye, Schifino, Dean, Cherry and Payne on this team. I think we could live without Payne, but the others wouldn't hurt us.
  9. I guess I will take no news on this as bad news. I have yet to hear any reports whatsoever on Da'Von Moore.
  10. I have watched the Campbell kid kick at McKinley and he was very good. He was drilling 45-50 yarder's in warm ups with ease in 35-40 degree high school playoff weather. I don't care if JD has to bring a guy out of the stands for tryouts, kicking should be almost automatic from 45 yards and in at the D1 level. This is just a joke.
  11. Well, there goes ANOTHER one of those highly touted 3 star players we all get excited to see. I am so sick and tired of this. How can almost EVERY one of our already limited amount of highly touted players be a major f up and never play? It just boggles the mind.
  12. I second your comments skip-zip. Your points were very accurate and I agree with you completely. Unfortunately, I was sitting in Cleveland Browns stadium listening to the idiots yelling "Were going to the super bowl. Quinn is taking us to the super bowl!!" Sad thing is, they actually believe it. Frye has never been put in a situation to do anything BUT fail and that is just the way it is.
  13. Does anyone know if Moore got his paperwork through and if he will be at practice on Tuesday as mentioned last week? I am excited about this guy because he has legit speed. I would hate to lose him.
  14. Zipsrifle, you are right in a lot of ways. It is easy to root for a winner and a lot of people will cheer for the popular team because they want to fit in with the crowd and "be one of the guys".You are also right about what BCS schools would say if we go 10-2. However, the only way to change that perception is to schedule some mid level BCS schools for home and home games and start winning some on a consistent basis. People used to say the same things about Boise State in football and Gonzaga in basketball. Then they started beating some good teams with regularity and they started to get legitimized by the media and fans on a national level. That is what we need to start doing. Trust me, if that happens Akron will get a following in NE Ohio. We will never convert dedicated Buckeye fans, but we would make them respect our program and we would see a "new era" of Zips fans. These are the high school and non BCS college kids that would root for the local winner if they appear to be a national player. Until we are looked at by the local community as a national player we will always be viewed as a 2nd tier team and rightfully so. We haven't earned anything yet.
  15. It is all about the money like zipsrifle stated. Why would OSU want to go play in a 30,000 seat stadium when they can make 25x the money hosting a MAC school? OSU has the largest athletics budget in the country and they need every dime they can get to support all their programs, etc.. Playing at a MAC school and getting a fraction of the money would be a very poor financial decision for the university. Running an athletics department is like running any other business. Would you give up several million dollars at your own business just to be nice to your competition? I highly doubt it. It really has nothing to do with them being snotty and sticking their nose in the air. I mean....they did play Cincy at Paul Brown stadium a few years ago. If we had the facility to host them they would do it if they had to for scheduling reasons. I highly doubt OSU has any fears whatsoever about ducking us. That is just comical. As for who people should root for....why is it anyone's right to say who you have to root for? Just because someone goes to a school for an education does not mean they have to support the athletics teams. If I went to Michigan or Can't because they had a certain academic program that was very strong, it doesn't mean I would ever root for their sports teams. What you seem to miss is the fact that people like cheering for Ohio State because they have always been the lone major power in the state. People grow up and learn to cheer for them at birth in most cases. Why? Because they are the lone big dog, they win and they are always on tv. Most people in Ohio root for Akron when they are playing an out of state school, but they are not looked at by anyone as a major power, thus OSU is usually their focus. There are tons of Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State, Florida and USC fans in Ohio. Why? They are a national power. How many people do you see in Ohio that follow sports at Rice, Louisiana Tech or New Mexico State? Why? They are not a major team. Let them become good on a national level and you will see things change. You can't force people to cheer for you are want to follow you. You have to give them a reason. Up until now Akron has done little to make people look away from Ohio State. Can you really blame them? One played for a national title last year while the other was sub .500 team in the 2nd worst conference in the country.
  16. You are absolutely correct that it isn't the university sticking us, it is a 3rd party. However, my comments are geared towards the 3rd party more so than a dig at the university. Saying that, I believe the university should have pushed for my original comment. Season ticket holders should get seats from the 30 on down on each side. That still leaves 20 yards of "mid-field" tickets if you will on each side for the sponsors or general public wanting to buy premium seats. I think that is more than plenty, especially at a hefty $45 per ticket price. We may end up seeing filled corners and end zones with an thinly filled middle.
  17. I think you miss the point a little. I am not complaining about getting $25 seats, nor do I think I should receive $45 seats. I guess my gripe is why are there $45 seats to begin with? This is really going to hold back ticket sales. I can see where the very good seats would be $25 and then work down from that number. Like I said in an earlier post...if we had a Big Ten or SEC school, fine. Army? People aren't typically going to spend $45 a pop to go watch Akron play Army. In my opinion it is just bad economics. You have to realize what a customer will pay for a product and I think history has shown that $45 is way too high for an Akron game unless they are playing a big time opponent. I believe the lower ticket prices would raise sales enough to more than cover the revenue they will lose from having the $45 tickets. To make this event successful, they need a large crowd in the first few years. If tickets are affordable and the product on the field is decent I think the crowd builds every year because business would repeat even if their main school isn't playing. I would go up next year to watch, say.... Miami (Oh) play Air Force. I would pay $25 for really good seats, but no way I fork out $45.
  18. LOLI find it funny because if you go to Google type in Todd Boeckman + Injury nothing comes up. Yet, you find an article from an upcoming high school senior at Dublin as your proof that he is injury prone. That was the only article I could find about his constant injury bugs. I will just say this...he has never missed a game at OSU because of injury. Nice try though.Um...when did I say they were invincible? Once again you are twisting the truth. Actually, I said they may lose 2 to 3 games this year, but it would not surprise me in the least if they went undefeated. They have the "talent" to do it. Yes, even more talent than last year in a lot of areas, except receiver and qb. Does 2 to 3 losses equate to "invincible?" I guess they do in your eyes.I am not getting defensive about anything. I am just getting upset at the constant miss information you keep throwing out such as Wells stats from high school, stupid Tony Hunt comparisons saying Tressel wanted him over Wells, nobody recruited Wells except OSU, # of returning starters on D, team being raw, very raw, Boeckman being a one and done player, lucky to be 7-5 or maybe .500, Mo Wells taking reps because Tressel is scared to give Chris Wells the ball, they scheduled Washington and YSU because Tressel knew they were going to be bad, etc... NONE of that information is true and I provided the facts to prove you wrong. All you do is call me a fan boy because that is all you have to come back at me with. So, I have no issues because I am not a fan boy as you suggest. I am just someone that actually has facts and backs them up. You, however, are someone that spews rhetoric and calls people disloyal when you know nothing about me or Ohio State. So, Go Bucks and Go Zips. Or should that be Go Zips and Go Bucks? Oh, I don't care. I love them both.Have a great day!!!!
  19. It has everything to do with Zips football. A few of us were talking about why we don't match up well and then the flame war ensued. We are called non-loyal fans because of our comments. Also, when one poster keeps saying Akron will win and his arguments are based on false information he is going to get called out and corrected by me. It isn't a 3 page debate about OSU's running backs or another teams off season. It is a debate on the difference in talent levels of the 2 teams and why it will be difficult for us to compete. It was also to correct how error filled some of the arguments were. I mean...did you see how many misinformations I had to correct? How is spouting bad and false info any good to this board in discussing our game with Ohio State? I am not going to sit here and say that we can beat them at any position because we can't. Name one position where we have more talent or are deeper? Enough said. I am done with this topic.
  20. Unfreaking believable that this topic got moved. lolI guess if you don't get the results you want through debate and facts you silence the voice that makes your agenda look flawed. Must be a bunch of liberals on this moderators list because that is straight from their play book. If you can't beat them with facts, call them names, lie to your supporters and then try to have them silenced. Classy move right here.Oh well, why bother trying to debate in facts?
  21. Out of everything that has gone back and forth all you can say for your "facts" is 100 carries and 4 fumbles. lolNice. I think I made my points then. You biggest argument for an Akron victory is that Chris Wells fumbled 4 times on 100 carries as a true freshman. What does that have to do with this year? Tiki Barber used to fumble all the time and then fixed his ball carrying method. Is it not possible that Wells did the same?I am not trying to bash anyone. Another poster made a statement about OSU having more talent on their 2 deep than we have for starters and people started calling him "disloyal" and a "Buckeye lover." Why? What do you want people that are fans of both to say? Do you honestly want to hear...Well, I went to Akron, so Columbus State sucks. We will kick their butt this year. Really? Great. Support it with facts (real facts) and not biased homerism. You just constantly throw garbage out there and expect people to believe it. Many do because they are either uninformed or too lazy to check. You just did it again in this post. When has Boeckman been injury prone? He wasn't in high school and hasn't been in college. How can you compare him to Germaine or Zwick? Germaine, by the way led the Bucks to the #2 ranking in the country. Boeckman has played off and on the last few years and has always played well when he has been in the games. He has been stuck behind a Heisman trophy winning quarterback that went 25-3 as a starter. I hardly consider that a reason to call Boeckman a one and done player.OSU may be incredibly vulnerable in your eyes, but not in many other peoples. The people that think they are don't know the players stepping in to fill the voids. You know...like that defense that was suppose to be so awful for them last year because they replaced 9 starters. Remember that?Akron isn't an afterthought team to me either. I just root for both. There is nothing wrong with that. When you grow up being a Buckeye fan from birth, you don't just stop rooting for them because you went to school at Akron. I have family that has played for both and I love both of them. Who are you to tell me where my loyalties lie?
  22. Why take it there? I am an Akron grad. I just find it humorous that g-mann17 can't debate facts, yet you get upset and tell me to go to another board. I am an Akron season ticket holder and a UA graduate. Sorry if I don't say "Akron can play dink and dunk and beat USC". If you can't have a real debate about facts this board is worthless anyway. If you don't like my views toss me off. I honestly don't care if that is how you want to be.
  23. Wow...you just need to stop because you keep looking dumber and dumber and dumber. Once again all your info is WRONG. Chris Wells was the #1 or #2 player in the country depending on which service you looked at. He had offers from OSU, Michigan, USC, etc.. People stopped recruiting him because he committed to Ohio State so early. As for playing a weak high school schedule...I take it you didn't watch Wells play in the US Army All-American game where he was a man amongst boys? I mean, you know more than me about this stuff like you say, so did you watch that game? If not here is the write up...The 2006 U.S. Army All-American Bowl marked the long awaited showcase of the nation's elite college prospects. The 2006 class will join the distinguished ranks of U.S. Army All-American Alumni, which includes players like Adrian Peterson, Chris Leak, Reggie Bush, and Teddy Ginn, Jr. As the nation looked on in hopes of catching a glimpse of tomorrow's next great college star, the U.S. Army All-Americans took the field to tout their skills for all football fans to enjoy. This year the West found out, if you looked up physical in the dictionary you'd probably find Chris Wells in the definition. Despite not breaking off a long-yardage gain, the Akron, Ohio native methodically dismantled the West defense by consistently pounding out short-yardage gains on the highly-acclaimed West defensive line and punching in three touchdowns in a 27-16 win.The East wasted no time getting on the board as Wells stepped across the goal line at the 10:54 mark of the first quarter. The West immediately answered however on a 22-yard pass from Jevan Snead to Ken Beasley which sealed up the first half with a 7-7 tie.The second half however was a different story as Wells and the East started to solidify their dominance. Led behind the stout legs of Wells and a stingy defense, the East separated themselves from their West counterparts. For his efforts, Wells was named the Pete Dawkins Trophy winner as the U.S. Army All-American Bowl MVP for 2006. The future Buckeye ran for 67 yards on 13 carries while tallying his three scores. On the West side, the standout was local Texas star Snead of Stephenville who threw for a couple of scores. Also, for you having such inside knowledge, you should at least know how many yards Wells ran for in high school. Here are his high school stats...High School: 2006 Parade All-American and named the nation's top running back ... rushed for 2,134 yards and 27 touchdowns on 223 carries as a senior (9.6 avg.) ... rushed for 1,939 yards and scored 20 touchdowns as a junior ... was named the 2005 National Player of the Year and the No. 1 prospect in the nation by several publications ... scored three TDs on his way to being selected Most Valuable Player of the U.S. Army All-America Bowl, a game in which his East squad and coach Ted Ginn Sr. won 27-16.Also, Tressel would take Hunt over Wells. Really? Did Tressel tell you this personally? If that is the case, why did OSU not even offer Hunt a scholarship? Look it up on rivals, etc... Hunt was a 3 star running back from Alexandria, Virginia. He was ranked as the #48 running back his senior year with NO offer from OSU.As for Boeckman, I made a typo. He is a 4th year junior, not 5th year. I guess they didn't need the alumni association to buy another year like you suggested. You can call me a fan boy if you want, but unlike you I provide nothing but facts and I back them up. You however, provide nothing but hate and incorrect information. Then you have the nerve to tell me I am a fan boy and illogical. Why, because I support my arguments and back them up with facts? Just read back and look how silly I have made you look through all of your incorrect and ignorant rants of miss-information. By the way, I loved the duck analogy.OSU: Loaded, deep, talented and dangerousG-Mann: blinded, naive, unable to present any facts whatsoever and stubborn.Once again thanks for playing, but sooner or later you are going to get sick of looking silly in front of your peers. Who knows though, maybe many of them are as blinded as you are about the subject.By the way...Go Zips!!!
  24. g-mann...nice attempt to beat down someone with an alternate opinion. Am I an OSU fan boy? Sure. I love Ohio State. My cousin played 4 years for the Buckeyes and was a senior on the 1 loss 1997 Rose Bowl team. My other cousin (OSU guys brother) actually played for Akron from 1996-2000. I went to school at Akron from the beginning and graduated in 2001. I have been to the Shoe one time since it got redone in 2001. Want to guess what that game was? Yup, Akron. I did go to Austin to watch the Buckeyes last year, however. As for Akron, I have been to more games than I can count. I went to Annapolis and watched them at Navy, drove to Cincy, etc... So, don't you dare call me a front running OSU fan boy. The fact is you do not know the first thing about Ohio States team, me, or football for that matter. So it is worthless to argue with you because you provide nothing useful in your arguments except calling people fan boys because they don't agree with you. You could not pick apart one point I made in my arguments and you further make yourself look uninformed with your responses. So, I will once again pick you apart.Let me see.....go find me one other person that would take Tony Hunt over Chris Wells. Go find me ONE!! You want to compare stats...lets go. Hunt as a junior had 277 carries for 1386 yards, 5.0 per carry. A long run of 41 yards and 11 td's. Wells, AS A TRUE FRESHMAN had 104 carries for 576 yards, 5.5 yards per carry. A long run of 52 yards for a td against Michigan with 7 td's. Wells, has more power, is faster and has better vision. Hunt was a 3rd round rb and Chris Wells would have been a first rounder coming out of high school!!!! On talent alone and what Wells showed last year he is already a better back than Tony Hunt. Go search on the computer and find a bunch of people (not PSU fans) that would take Hunt over Wells.Well, your Big Ten preview magazine was wrong. As for guys getting bumped because they are weaker...what? Are you seriously going to use that as an argument? It is called talent. At places like OSU prime talent comes in every year. You aren't guaranteed a job because you started or played a lot the year before. When you are bringing in players like Eugene Clifford, Brandon Saine, etc.. people get bumped. It has nothing to do with them being weaker, it has to do with them being better, faster and stronger than the guys they are replacing. It is strength not weakness as you suggest.Once again, you prove that you know nothing. Boeckman is a 4th year junior, so he will be back next year as well. As for the future, it is the perfect situation. Ohio State leads for the #1 player in the country for 2007 in QB Terrelle Pryor from Jeanette (PA). Boeckman will be wrapping up his playing days when Pryor is finishing his redshirt year. Unlike Akron, OSU doesn't have to build for the future every year because guess what?...every year is the future. They always expect to be good enough to think this is their year to win it.Nobody knows how truly bad they are going to be next year except Tressel. That is why the OOC schedule is bad? Once AGAIN you show that you know nothing. OSU scheduled Washington in the 90's when guess what???? Washington was ranked #1 in the country. It isn't Ohio States fault they dropped off the face of the earth. The only reason Ohio State scheduled YSU was the 12 game schedule was added as a mandatory game. OSU couldn't get another opponent in part because the Big Ten does not have bye weeks so they can finish play the week before Thanksgiving. They added YSU out of necessity, not because Tressel knew they were going to be bad. If OSU is going to be so bad in the future would they have added upcoming home and homes starting next year with USC, Miami (fl), and Virginia Tech?As for their record.....WHAT? No way do they lose 4 games or go .500. No way do they lose to one of the MAC schools. No way do they lose to Minnesota!!! They will have a top 5 defense and their offense won't lose much from last year. I believe they lose 1 or 2 games this year, but 3 is an outside possibility. What are you basing their poor record on, you being an uninformed hater? From what you have written about the team you have gotten zero information right, so what makes you even remotely capable of predicting their record?Multiple threats? What defense doesn't struggle against teams with multiple threats. Thanks for that insight captain obvious. As for the fluke...yes. Florida did not blow out anyone last year. They struggled against Vandy and multiple other lowly teams. The only game they truly looked dominate was against OSU and they looked like they were all stoned before the game. So...when a team rolls everyone they play by 26 points and then gets smoked 52 days after the end of the season I will call that a fluke. I don't think it is a fluke that they lost because Florida was a good team, but no way was Florida that much better. Was Can't that much better than Akron last year? I think not.So, if you want to keep coming back I will keep knocking your comments out of the park. Anyone else want to be a blinded homer and call his incorrect and uninformative arguments a swish? Be my guest.
  25. My, my my. I feel bad about tearing this apart, but you obviously have no idea what is going on in Columbus. First, their defense returns more than 4 starters. I can think of Laurinitis, Gholston, Freeman, Jenkins, Russell, Washington, etc... off the top of my head. One starter last year (O'Neil) and another (Patterson) got bumped out by better players. As for their defense being raw, very raw. Were in the sam hell do you get that from? Their linebackers are loaded and VERY experienced into the 3rd depth and their DL and secondary has experience throughout. Were on earth are they raw? Almost every expert has their defense rated in the top 5 in the country because of the mix of returning stars plus the influx of talent that is probably upgraded from last years team.Second, If you think Chris Wells is no better than Tony Hunt you obviously haven't watched much of Chris Wells. Did he fumble during the 1st half of last season? Yes. However, he has solved that problem and he is going to be an absolute force. He will rush for over 1,500 yards this year.Third, you consider Boeckman a throw and hope quarterback? He is in his 5th year in the system and is a more accurate passer than Troy Smith. He also had a faster 40 time than Troy Smith. Boeckman will be a 2nd team all Big Ten QB this year.Fourth, were do you get your information about Maurice Wells getting more reps because of the staff being scared to play Chris Wells? That may be the funniest thing I have ever heard. Actually, Maurice Wells has fallen off the depth chart because guys like Brandon Saine (The fastest sprinter in Ohio high school history) has already passed him by. Mo Wells will be lucky to see the backfield. That is why they have moved him to a kickoff returner. He probably won't last long there either because he will soon be passed by either Ray Small or Brandon Saine.Fifth, OSU could not score at will last year? WHAT??? They averaged 36.33 points per game and only gave up 10.4!! In other words...they had over 30 up by the end of the 3rd quarter and the 2nd string was mopping up in the end. Sixth, Akron can beat OSU by dinking and dunking like Florida. First, Akron is not Florida so how can you say we can beat OSU by doing what Flroida did? Secondly, that game was a fluke. OSU was so under prepared for the game it was sickening. Seventh, Washington isn't that great. I doubt OSU is preparing for us as hard as Washington, but after getting their ass kicked by Florida they are going to be out for blood whenever they can this season. They won't overlook us.I could go on and on, but I really don't think I have to.
