So, let's say without Dawson we end up with a lineup with three "smaller" guards (X plus two of Tribble, Hankerson and Clarke) and the two big guys (Freeman and Hunter).  Do we see a little more up tempo as a result or do they slow it down having less depth now?  Do we see more zone to protect the smaller guards?

It's going to be a very interesting first half or 2/3 of the season as we see how Groce brings this together.

    In Groce I trust.

I'm holding any questions until we see how this team shoots the ball. The good thing is, we have the blueprint from last year to see how to be successful if we aren't the best shooting team.

  2. Thank you for posting that. I had never heard the story about the 4th official walking off. That game was COLD. Sounds like the official was looking to get to warmth but the Akron bench was too hot. Haha.

Also, love hearing Embick mention that Lola didn't think he could win a Natty here. Someone correct me, but have we ever lost to Lola? Obviously we beat him in 2010, and again during one of the 3 Final Four trips we've made under Embick. Any other encounters?

One thing I was disappointed to not see included was the flurry at the end of the National Championship game. THAT was some of the most chaotic soccer I've ever seen. Would've loved to have heard Embick's thoughts and what the coaches were thinking as Meves was making a toe save after Valentin(?) cleared the ball off the line.

Things are never as they seem. The real winner is SMU. The get rid of four malcontents the next coach won't have to deal with and it opens up the door for four guys who want to be there.

These four guys will just go somewhere else and be malcontents. Good luck to that team.

Maybe. Or maybe the find the right fit and have successfully (maybe lucrative) football careers.

I appreciate all of the thoughtful post-game thoughts made so far, but one of the most important aspects of the game, a topic several ZipsNation members (you know who you are) could talk about all day long, has not been mentioned yet.

In general, how were the Zips uniforms?

    What color were their jerseys?

Were the jerseys the right shade of whatever color they were?

What color combination of jersey and pants would have improved their overall look?

Do you think the Zips helmets were the best color to go with the rest of the uniform?

Do you think a different font for the players numbers would improve the look of the jerseys?

What did you like most about their uniforms?

What did you like least about their uniforms?

All the uniforms look slick a hell IMO.

    +1.

I'm a big fan of the rebranded A, and with that has come some incredibly nice uniforms.

Until Moorhead gets a Power 5 and Bowl win don't compare him to Bowden

I would love to know what happened with Bowden's regime. Wins against Pitt and Northwestern, Famous Idaho Potato Bowl win, MAC Championship Game appearance, then the program just seemed to hit a brick wall and actually went backwards - quickly.

Regardless, I think the accomplishments Bowden had will be surpassed by Moorhead eventually.

  6. When Bowden became HC, he inherited a similarly depleted program his 4 year plan was Lose Big, Lose Small, Win Small, Win Big.

In year 1 of JoeMo, we're already losing small - one to a team that is probably a year or two ahead of us, and one to a team that we beat ourselves more than they beat us.

Through 5 weeks, the holes in this team are obvious. Special Teams, Offensive Line, and the entire Secondary. Zero concerns with that being solved via recruiting for next year and beyond, but what can be done to salvage this season with those groups? That will be interesting to follow.

Love the offense and can't wait to see it ran with a more formidable offensive line.

    Beat OU.

  7. On a bored, slow Friday at work, I decided to take a stroll over to bobcatattack.com just to see what the wannabe blOSU Southeast Campus folks were saying about their athletics. You're not going to hear me say this often, but credit to the Carole Baskin Kitty Krew for putting together quite the MAC Basketball Transfer tracker.

Feel free to check out the full thread here.

    A synopsis...

    - 4 inter-conference transfers

    - 3 arrivals to the MAC via Duquesne (1 departure to Duquesne)

    - 8 P6 transfers into the MAC (does not include Emoni Bates; 4 departures to P6 schools, including Josh M'Balla to Ole Miss)

    good post....

every year, they do seem to have one horrible clunker at home.    Last year, it was a saturday night home game against one of the Georgia teams.    Zips are 0-3 in the last 2 years against NIU.    Zips must come out and dominate on Sunday night.    Zips must be 1-0.....when they go play at BGSU.

Now you're just trying too hard to get back in good graces. Haha.

Full heartedly agree, though, that this is a must win. Every MAC game is a must win, especially given our recent lack-of-domination in this pathetic excuse for a conference.

That's a nice little pull right there! I'm hoping that in addition to Joe sticking around for a few years, a lot of those young guys on staff get a few years in here before they inevitably move on to bigger and brighter things. I also like to think that down the line, some of these guys who will become great coaches will remember their time at Akron in a positive light and see it as a great place to take their first job as a coordinator or even the head coach. I loved this hiring strategy by Joe from the start, these guys are the real deal.

If you give JoeMo the rosters that Arth had, I think we would've been closer to .500 in MAC play during that stretch. That's how much I believe in JoeMo and his staff. To fill a G5 program with P5 coaches, no matter their experience, goes a long way. We see more and more connections and statements that prove JoeMo has quite the positive reputation in the college football coaching world, and he's our guy.

When asked who is next in line if anything like that happened at Akron, he said coach Fess (QB coach Billy Fessler). I found that very interesting, he’s very young but has an impressive resume for his age.

This is his protégé. Played for Joe at Penn State, and was a Grad Assistant at Mississippi State under Joe.

Ask Michigan how well having a JoeMo protégé on staff worked out for them. Spoiler alert: they beat OSUcks, and JoeMo's game plan while he was at Oregon (and beat OSUcks) was credited, which Josh Gattis (former assistant under JoeMo at Penn State) copied.

Interestingly enough, Gattis went to Miami to be their OC under Cristobal. So Mario filled the JoeMo void with a piece of the JoeMo coaching tree.

  11. This was the wise and safe decision.

As we found out last year, the MAC is no longer a cake walk for us to win easily. Every MAC game matters as much as the gauntlet that was the first part of our schedule. Stay focused, and we can go undefeated in MAC play. Lose focus, like we saw against OSUcks, Pitt, Penn State, etc., and we'll be putting ourselves in holes that we may not be able to get out of.

I believe the volleyball match that started at 6 pm was on ESPN+. Even if it wasn't, that is why there was a lesser production quality last night. Split staff.

    To roughly quote Ricky Bobby...

With all due respect, and remember I am saying with all due respect, the idea of not putting your best staff on your top 25 soccer program ain't worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin getting it on.
