  1. My apologies for triggering you with my source.

I came across the article, drawn mostly by the fact that it named a fellow MAC school (OU), and couldn't believe that a diversity czar makes that much. It made me wonder, aware of Akron's financial troubles, if we had one of these and if their salary was similar. I also never knew that it was a position in the first place. I still am not quite sure I understand the positive effects the diversity aspect of this position has, especially at its price tag. The community engagement aspect I understand, but aren't there other community engagement positions?

Sorry for posting this in the Off Topic section, Balsy. Won't happen again.

Let's be real. The committee won't give a sht if we beat OU or Buffalo an extra time. Or vice versa

OU, no (at least not in their current state). Buffalo, probably (depending on how the season is going).

Fact is, shaping a schedule like this to replace a bottom-level MAC squad with a top 4 MAC squad can only help in the end. Kreed is right, it will still take a strong OOC to make a difference, but that's why I suggested combining the end of the conference schedule with another conference.

Do not rely on the press release for the answer to your question.

    the press release says:

The University of Akron men's soccer team unveiled a challenging 2018 slate, one that will see the Zips face six opponents from the 2017 NCAA Tournament field sixth-year head coach Jared Embick announced today.

we know that Western Michigan made the tournament...so the press release would indicate that only 5 of the 12 conference teams made last year's NCAA tourney

the correct answer is that there are 8 teams on the zips schedule that made the 2017 NCAA tourney (7 non - conf and WMU)

    Butler -yes

    NC State - yes

    Pitt                                  NO

    Seattle - yes

    Washington - yes

    Connecticut                NO

    Grand Canyon            NO

    VCU - yes

    Syracuse                    NO

    Mich. State- yes

    Creighton                  NO

    Notre Dame - yes

I would expect both Creighton and Syracuse to be back in the NCAA this year...and Pitt has a highly rated recruiting class

also.....if you look at the press release...check out the paragraph on opening up MAC play against the Falcons...really poor press release by the soccer SID

I didn't read the press release, and for good reason. Look no further than the 2017 College Cup shield being used in the graphic for inaccuracies in the release.

I was going off memory, and I guess I mixed in a few typical NCAA Tournament teams with last year's participants - Creighton, Syracuse, UCONN.

Exactly.  With every day that passes the new coach is further hampered in recruiting and preparing for next season.  No reason you can't interview and figure out who the coach will be with an effective date down the line.  Any chance there's an inside candidate already in line for the job?

Maybe they're looking for one person to coach women's basketball and men's baseball.

Why should it take a couple more years to re-establish ourselves? We made it to Cleveland last year with two hands tied behind our back. I'd expect to be playing on Friday night at The Q this season, and I'd give us a puncher's chance against any "major" opponent this year...at least as much of a puncher's chance as any MAC program would have.

You're absolutely correct, which is why when I said a couple of years, I was referring to the scheduling aspect - not the re-establishment. Not this upcoming season, but the following season, I expect to see a schedule similar to OU's (maybe not the home game against Purdue). I need to work on better wording and clarity in my posts apparently. :tomato: Haha.

We have a young team that finished 11th in the MAC last season. Racing to 20 losses isn't the way for us to rebuild our program. These young kids need to build confidence. Losing by 30 to (insert blue blood) won't do that. We should look to schedule tougher when we have a team that is capable of actually making those games interesting.

My apologies if I was unclear with my post. I wasn't suggesting that the Zips schedule like that in the present, but rather what a schedule could and should look like in a couple years once we re-establish ourselves.

  7. Side note. I know scheduling is a big topic around here, and it looks like Saul is going to give himself every opportunity to save his job in Athens.

    Highlights for OU...

    - At Xavier this upcoming season

    - Possibly a tournament in Jamaica with Georgetown as a confirmed opponent (field yet to be announced)

    - At Purdue this upcoming season

    - Purdue AT THE CONVO the following season?!

Who do we have confirmed outside of the Cayman Islands tourney?

P.S. Sorry for plugging Kitty Attack. I frequent as a non-registered guest often, though, as they are the second best fan board in the MAC and typically have some good nuggets. Plus, I especially like to see their fan base in disarray over the state of their program currently.

Terry and family were very strongly rooted in the Marlington School District, so I saw him as being the most difficult "leave" when the staff escaped to Pittsburgh.  I can imagine they're feeling homesick by now.  For reasons that are internal to Terry, he never felt the desire to apply for head coaching jobs while at Akron.  Maybe this is his last chance at either a HC job or returning to the area (He's a Barberton native).  I'm just not sure its a good idea to hire a man who's never coached womens' basketball for his first HC job at a D1 university.

It makes a lot of sense for him both career wise and location wise. It's just a bit out of left field to consider him, a guy as you said with zero women's basketball coaching experience (minus the summer camps).

Jake is from Bishop Hartley in Columbus before going to prep school, he is a  high volume shooter, He has always been a highly ranked player based off his scoring average, he can shoot, likes to shoot & does shoot a lot, IMO the rest of his game will struggle to transition to this level of basketball

    Nick Goddard 2.0?

I wonder if there was any conversation here? A local kid, 6’10”, a stretch 4 who can shoot

I doubt it. Appearing in only 10 games for an OU squad that was bitten by the injury bug and flat out blew last year isn't exactly enticing. Only shot 22% from the field, too. With Walsh, he'll still be getting his education paid for, and Walsh has fine academics.

Northeast Ohio, I know I know.. Wonder how much respect we have leftover from the last time we beat them in 1894

Oh I could give a crap about LeBron's BS. Haha. I just think a good showing can earn us some respect, while also pocketing over a million dollars. :)

  12. This is such a great recruiting matchup for us. It gets our name into the minds of the Columbus-area recruits who might not be good enough for significant playing time at OSU, but want to stay somewhat close to home. That actually goes for a lot of OSUcks-fan-recruits in general.

I can see it now. Ramart leads us on a game-winning drive to beat the Suckeyes.

  13. Now that this is in the right section, I'll comment.

She organized a 2A rally on their campus a few weeks ago. Her dad is apparently a big 2A guy, and has raised his daughter similarly. I've seen this photo and other photos from her graduation circulating, and have a few comments...

    - I'm a huge 2A person, but not a big fan of these open carry demonstrations. I don't think the optics of open carry demonstrations with AR15s (or in this case, an AR10) are positive for gun owners.

    - I doubt it is, but I hope the magazine and chamber are empty. Typically with open carry demonstrations, the magazine is not in the magwell to show that it's empty.

    - Can't must be livid that this is getting so much attention.

    - I wish she would've carried an AR15, not an AR10. I don't think the pro-gun control crowd knows about the evil AR10 yet. ;)

Edit: Let me add that I actually appreciate her reasoning for doing this.

  14. In its third season under head coach Terry Bowden, Akron came one game shy from winning its first MAC championship since 2005 after winning the East Division but falling to Toledo in the title game.

This will only be our fourth season with Bowden as our coach?! We are WAY ahead of schedule!

  15. Is it a lack of urgency, or a determination to find the right candidate? Do we know any details on the depth of the search, or is all of this pure speculation based on when Kest was relieved of her duties and the fact that we missed out on a supposedly good coach from Ashland? I'm sure people wanted a coach hired by now so we can save this recruiting class, but hiring the wrong person can be more detrimental to the program than missing out on a singular recruiting class.

Is it building a program to have 6 recruits already having collegiate experience?  Or is it someone looking to try and make an impact and get another big job.

Fire away at me lol :P

It would be a shame if that impact was made while at Akron.

Looks like we have wrapped it up for this chaotic post season.  https://bit.ly/2GdXNKs

I  have not seen any news on where some of last years departing players have landed.  Anyone have any updates I missed?

Are those grey unis new? I know we wore grey unis last year, but those look different. I could be wrong.

    Gueye looks ripped.

This is going to be a fun, fun upcoming season. Let's Go Zips!
